Equinox and Crystal Ball...
I know. Because of this site (and Spotify), I heard all of them 3-4 years ago, and have heard them several times since, but it's not the same, as if I had heard them in the 70's.
Dang, this Styx album is a fine piece of work.
I've made one full pass through start to finish. I gotta say it far exceeds expectations, but those were set pretty low by Cyclorama and the addition of a non-songwriting partner in Gowan - at least not an interesting song writer.
So in all fairness that's my real issue here too, the songs are just OK (with some exceptions), and while there are ties to the past its mostly in sound and production. The minimal prog elements don't really harken back to any Styx of yore... Where are the long JY jams that hallmarked the prog of the band prior to Equinox, those seem to have all but disappeared.
And I'll cut Gowan some slack, he's not irritating to listen to - watch? well that's a different story. But he is a very talented keyboardist no doubt and he does play DDY's music well.
But I'm going to take another listen through this because I liked it enough to be interested throughout, but not enough to call it Real-Styx or to purchase... yet...
Jon, can you state your opinion on the CT album and the Larry Gowan featuring Styx album?
Nice AnSSwer!
