Classic Rock Bottom

For the 15th album in the series you may or may not be totally enjoying (like I care), it's the 1972 self-titled release from New Heavenly Blue.

Looking at the album cover, you might think there's 12 members in the band. Well, there's only six so don't be so frightened.

Not a lot of info on the band, but there's this little tidbit from Amazon:

This is the 1972 album from the experimental Rock band that incorporated aspects of Jazz, Blues, Classical and Rock into their music. The band features Chris Brubeck, son of Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck.

Man, I totally dig this.

So, I tried to figure out what this might sound like just by looking at the album cover.  I did not read the post before I listened (at least some of it, anyway).  My first thought from the album cover was Deliverance.  Probably because there's a river or at least some kind of water there.  I also see a fiddle and a mandolin, but no banjo.  I still got that feeling from the cover.

Other than that, I can't really get a vibe on the actual music from it.  So I listened.  First song reminded me of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils a little bit.  Second song has a classical sound to it.  I wonder if Steven Wilson was influenced at all by this band.  This track makes me think of him, at least at first.  Maybe not all the way through.  Raft Song makes me think of DLR.  It cracks me up that anything that I post that has the slightest country flavor is scorned as "too country" by you, but you dig this.

And just when I think it's more country than anything else, here comes the rockin' Hard Lovin' Man.  The blues tune Tulsa Oklahoma Blues.  The R&B flavored Nebulon Possessed.

It's official, this album is all over the place.  But it's a decent Sunday afternoon listen.  Not too heavy.  Last tune sounds like a Broadway tune.  All over the place.

Good call on that Ozark Mountain Daredevil vibe on the opener.  Not a real good knock-off but its a good start.  This is going to meander I can tell - plus I read Bossman's comments and he's usually always right - at least that's what Jon told me.

A bit of ballad-prog on that second track, that's a first!  Actually quite odd, since this is 1972 could there be a bit of hallucinogenic influencing going on?  I'm going with OH HELL YES, because that's the only explanation that makes sense.  Getting lost in this right about half way through Raft Song...  not a good sign.  But!!!  The Muppet-like vocals of track #4 made me listen again.  close one...

Cant get into your red song either...  Not sure where this is going, is hoe-down, country rock, straight country, jazz rock, New Orleans bar band jazz, or southern rock with a jazz twist?    I did like the Blues tunes, had they opted for guitar work instead of horns it woudl have been a candidate for the Cherry pick of the post!  But nope didn't make it... Now Nebulon Possessed is strong!  Im short listing it!  The Idol makes the short list also, oddly enough that little vocal break was awesome!  But the keyboard and guitar work are really strong here as well - the group vocal thing may kill it though...

Ah what the heck!  Its a tie! Only because they run back to back, but Nebulon Possessed and The Idol are clearly the Cherry picks of the post!  Last half (formerly known as side 2) was way better!!
