Classic Rock Bottom

Day 7
Dear Diary

DING! DI... and that's it. Half a guess. It's the best Jon could do this week, but it was enough for him to steal the lead from Scott. The then Megadeth guitarist was the correct answer for the Guitarist Gone Solo section and the exact CD I was looking for, was his critically acclaimed Scenes. Jon's other guess: Fish, was a healthy choice, but it was little bit raw. And Sade for Melodic Rock??? What's next? Sinéad O'Connor for Heavy Metal? Uhhh... The current standing and the new leader is:
Jon with 1000 pts
Scott has a gap to fill with 600 pts
And Everyone Else rocks at bottom, with 0 pts

Global News... I'm not sure where these come from, but they are here so, all you got to do is, accept them... like me. Recently, a food bank in Cardiff got some well aged cans of Green Giant's sweetcorn and some Heinz' ready to eat Kidney Soup. I'm not sure why they complain? After all, these nice people took their time to store these cans for generations, (32 years for the sweetcorn and 46 years for the soup, to be precises... AND that's after the expiration dates) reducing their valuable space in the pantry, just so they can provide delicacies to poor people. If you ask me, it's the food banks fault they don't accept wine, so these generous folks aged the next best things. Speaking of delicacies... Can you imagine if it was a can of an elephant meat? Now, that would've been something. Sure, if it contained some of the preferred parts, no problem, but you can't pick and choose at food banks. Elephant meat is rare and precious, every bit, big and small, must be carefully processed and canned... including it's bum... and... yes, you guessed it... it's bum-hole, too. I know, I know, there would be few cans of nothing but compressed, stinky air coming out from the filling tubes, but... That's the nature of the business. In other words, the food bank should be thankful, especially around Thanksgiving, that someone was considerate enough to donated a can of sweetcorn and soup and not a can of elephant meat. Just sayin', "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

Island News... All this talk about food makes me hungry. I wish there was a can of 32 years old sweetcorn laying around or perhaps a 46 years old soup hidden in the sand. Unfortunately, I might have to go vegan. I hope one of them shipwrecks here... Soon!

WARNING! GUITARPALOOZA AHEAD!! Can YOU handle it?

1. VAN HALEN - 1984
2. VAN HALEN - House Of Pain
from "1984" CD ℗ 1984/2000

I had a dilemma whether to put this album in Hard Rock or Melodic Rock section? Any Van Hagar album would have clearly gone to the later, but I felt it all started to get little bit too melodic for Van Halen when Eddie discovered synthesizers. I had a friend who loved Hard Rock, while also professionally DJ-ing. His stereo equipment was outstanding and if I needed to tape a vinyl, he was the Man. Of course, in the clubs (discotheques... as they called them then) he would only play Techno or Italo Disco, as a requirement. He knew I like the bouncy special effects on those Italo Dance tracks, so he would make me few cassettes of such... Ahem... For when I wanted to impress the Ladies. I was surprised to hear Jump among the selection and when I asked him about it, he said, the song is highly requested by the club goers. And I mean, those people who don't like Metal or Hard Rock, whatsoever. However, they made an exception to Jump. So, who am I to deny it's Melodic Rock status?

3. VINCE NEIL - Look In Her Eyes
4. VINCE NEIL - Set Me Free (Sweet Cover)
5. VINCE NEIL - The Edge
6. VINCE NEIL - Living Is A Luxury
from "Exposed" CD ℗ 1993

While I like Motley Crue just enough, it was Steve Stevens who prompted the purchase of this CD. I always admired his work and strangely it was Vince Neil's solo album where he put his right foot forward and not one of his solo or Billy Idol performances. If you haven't heard this album, or if you haven't heard this album for the guitars, you owe it to yourself to do so. The liner notes list a whole band with another guitarist in the line up (I can't remember who), but further down the credits, it says Steve Stevens played all the guitars and even later it was revealed, he played all the bass, as well. This is a solo CD from a vocalist, but it's one of the best guitar oriented albums ever done. Too bad his collaboration with bass player Phil Soussan (Ozzy, Beggars & Thieves) ended abruptly and on a bad note when Stevens insisted to play all the bass himself on the album. They made a good composing team.

7. MARTY FRIEDMAN - Valley Of Eternity
8. MARTY FRIEDMAN - Realm Of The Senses
9. MARTY FRIEDMAN - Triumph
from "Scenes" CD ℗ 1992

With Scenes Marty Friedman surprised everyone, including yours truly as well as my cousin, who never liked Trash Metal and it's subsidiaries. Marty Friedman switched from Heavy Metal to New Age, like it was a matter of stealing a pacifier from the baby. Of course, he had great help from the veterans in the field; Kitaro and Brian BecVar, but the transition was so seamless and smooth, it felt like that's all he did his whole life. This Instrumental CD made the very select group of 4 Island inductees, but if I was given only 1 choice, Scenes would still make the list. The drums were supplied by the late, great Megadeth alumni Nick Menza.

Jon's winning huh?  That could only mean one thing... That's right, collusion!  I'm calling it!

My guesses for next week...

  • Rock:  ZZ Top - El Loco
  • Metal: Krokus (Can I get an extra 100 if Jon guesses Abba?)
  • Singers Gone Solo: no idea...

Van Halen with or without keyboards?  Who cares as long as its the Roth albums!  After 5150 I have to pick at the albums ...

You know I had that Vince Neil in my collection once...  picked up at Used store, if memory serves me correctly (and it usually does, just ask anyone on here), I carefully removed the Used stickers and price tag and re-returned it.   ITs not bad listening to it here, rocks pretty good!  But alas, I'm wont be re-buying it..

Friedman is the real deal!  His stretch of albums with Megadeth are easily that bands best - Yes, I like Cryptic Writings and Risk as well.  But guitar instrumental albums are very rare in my collection.  I have some Vai (but in fairness they're not all instrumental), one Satriani because Flying In A Blue Dream is probably my favorite guitar instrumental ever, and one Eric Johnson.  I have a few other instrumental albums I like but they're not strictly guitarists albums.  Still I like what you've posted here.

ZZ Top

Therion or Ghost

Yanni

Anyone who guessed Krokus for Swedish bands is stoopid because everyone knows they're from Switzerland. DUH!!!

You passed the test!

This has been getting quite long the last couple weeks. What's up with that?

Like SS but do not like Vince Neil at all. Have to say this is pretty good, but since it's VN it's not something I really have interest in getting.

VH's 1984 is 1984 but I would have went with WACF. That's me.

If I was forced to take an MF album with me, it would be Loudspeaker because it totally rocks. This isn't bad, but I would need something uplifting while on the island. Of course I could listen to this while building a hut.

Oh, THAT?

Last week podsnack screwed up their dropbox connections by not updating their API applications, so I lost the access to my files and wasn't able to create a new playlist. I waited, and waited, and waited, till I said F*CK it!

Pulled the trigger and bought the VIP pass. I don't have to state the obvious benefits this created for podsnack, (their stocks skyrocketed) but now, YOU get more than 5 songs, (only, when I see it fit, though. For 1 album presentations, I'll go back to my accustomed 5 song playlists) the songs can be longer than 5 min. and there is no watermark at the beginning, so you better be fenjoying this upgrade, for it cost me some shiny pennies.

Uhhh....you do realize that Scott, Rjhog and I have been proud paying members of podsnack for the last couple years, right? RIGHT?

Right.

And one would think that should be enough for them, but nooooooo
