ALBUM OF THE WEEK # 386 VELVET REVOLVER - CONTRABAND (2004)

Disclaimer: All info that does not reside in my brain is gathered from wikipedia.com (mostly because Jon can't stand it) unless otherwise noted.

We've been in the late 60's and early 70's for a while now, so let's change it up this week.  For some reason, Scott Weiland has been on my mind lately.  No real reason, he just has been.  So this week's album is the debut by Velvet Revolver.  The GNR/STP combo group released Contraband in 2004.

It sold well at just shy of 3 million copies.  It was a number one album for the band with a couple of moderate hits, nothing major.  It is what it is, just listen and comment.

Tracks:

1. Sucker Train Blues

2. Do It For The Kids

3. Big Machine

4. Illegal I Song

5. Spectacle

6. Fall To Pieces

7. Headspace

8. Superhuman

9. Set Me Free

10. You Got No Right

11. Slither

12. Dirty Little Thing

13. Loving The Alien

The very best singer from the 90's (Yes that's my opinion!) meets Slash/Duff and what comes out of it leans very heavily towards Weilands brand of Rock and Roll! There is more Weiland here than you might imagine, or should I say there's more STP in the mix than GnR.  And that's what really pushes this over the top for me!

Fall To Pieces is a classic IMO.  Its the one true GnR/STP hybrid tune on here and it works to perfection!

I still kick the tires on this album a good bit and truth be told their follow-up, Libertad, is very nearly as good so the pair are must haves IMO.  Shame this band couldn't figure out a way to make it work for longer...

Well......yeah......no.

Didn't care for them back then, and don't care for them now. This is the first time I've heard the full album and it really does nothing for me. Every song sounds the same!

it definitely is what it is. Nothing new or special, nothing that grabs ya. I group them in with Audioslave, sure there might be some good musicians and vocalists in each one, but there's nothing special about 'em but they sell tons.

Hey, at least I like the album cover. She's a bit....sexy. But I don't see any velvet?

The velvet is on the inside!

Oh?
