Classic Rock Bottom

Day 18
Dear Diary,

DING DING DING. Not very often, but here and there even the blind chicken finds a corn. And with a maneuver equal of pulling the tooth, Scott gave us the one and only correct answer in a category he previously declared to be way above his erudition and Rock 'N' Roll knowledge. This leads to a more interesting finale, though. And the point is:
Jon Rides To Win with 1950 pts
Scott Battles Him with 1801 pts, while
Everyone Else is Down And Out with 0 pts.

Global News... Xiao Li from Zhengzhou, eastern China is a heartless woman (let's call her that), because she left a "Bad Review" to an online retail company from Suzhou. Her complaint was about the four days late delivery. This really pissed off, Mr Zhang who is the owner of the aforementioned company, so much, that he traveled all night and 500 miles just to confront the bitc... I mean, miss Li. And when he did, he "thought her a lesson". The "lesson" included: kicking, slapping, smacking punching and pushing, which was all caught on a security camera. Of course, this whole thing could have been avoided if Mr. Zhang just picked up the item Miss Li ordered and made the delivery to her in such expedite manner. I mean immediately after the review was posted, he went to see her empty handed. Granted, what he used his hands for, they had to be empty, but still. Police had no comments, as usual, but obviously these things are not acceptable. I hope miss Li learned her lesson. Speaking of which... I'm contemplating the same action against those individuals who gave Ossian a "Thumbs Down Review" in the New Music Corner. Shoot, can't do it. I'm on an Island, relaxing, but I can send my good buddy Mr. Zhang over with my regards. He definitely got the hang of it, so don't get comfortable.

Island News... We have a good news, bad news situation, again. The good news is, the green has returned to the Island. And the bad news is, it's the water that turned green. I'm not sure if that green thing coming out from the battery is good or bad, but just to be safe, I won't drink it. Otherwise, I was extremely bored so I decided to spell out some of my favorite food on the sand. MILK... BREAD... and just when I got half way through the third one, I had to hit the bushes. By the time I was back, a copter landed and the pilot wanted to rescue me. He was yaping about a medal he'll receive from the major for his heroic act, but I told him to f**k off. I'm here at my own free will and I was just spelling out my favorite food when I had to go. Then he yelled at me for not being good at spelling. Well, excuse me, it's not my fault the sand on the beach doesn't correct itself. Next time I'm on an Island, I'll make sure it has one of those auto correct features, so it can correct the word SOSAGE. Geez, alrigthy and Jozef. Boy, was the pilot pissed. Well, I was right back at him.

Now that he's gone, let's relax with music.

1. COZY POWELL - The Drums Are Back
2. COZY POWELL - Ride To Win
3. COZY POWELL - I Wanna Hear You Shout
4. COZY POWELL - Battle Hymn
5. COZY POWELL - The Rocket
from "The Drums Are Back" CD ℗ 1992

At the time this CD came out, in one form or another, I already had all the Powell solo releases and I was happy to see his new album in the mail order catalog. (Ginza) Knowing that Powell always brought some of his friends along for the ride, I expected nothing less from him again. And the list is perhaps even more impressive than it was before: Brian May, Don Airey, Geoff Nicholls, John Sinclair, Billy Sheehan, Steve Lukather, Neil Murray, John Deacon, John Lord etc.

6. ACCEPT - Breaker
7. ACCEPT - Feelings
8. ACCEPT - Breaking Up Again
9. ACCEPT - Midnight Highway
10. ACCEPT - Down And Out
from "Breaker" Digipak ℗ 1981/2000

Another band I was responsible for introducing to my friends and again I had to pick it up aboard. It was well received by everyone and their next album was released back home too. The highlight would be "Son Of A Bitch", but even the booklet left out the lyrics, so excuse me if I don't include it here. However, if you haven't heard it yet, look it up. It has one of those articulate moments, like the song "Signs" and it goes something like this: "Ugrhhhh..." The album had it's party moments as well, in songs like "Breaking Up Again" and "Can't Stand The Night". The girls loved those ballads and they could not believe all these songs were performed by the same band.

11. JEFF BECK - Nighthawks
12. JEFF BECK - Gets Us All In The End
from "Flash" CD ℗ 1985

I have lots of Jeff Beck in my collection, and not only his solo projects and band outings, but CDs were he contributed a solo or two, as well. Truly a remarkable artist and an underappreciated guitarist. Flash is definitely his most commercial album, however that is not the biggest draw for bringing this CD to the Island. It's the guitar playing. Simply, it's amazing. Check out "Gets Us All In The End" for all the different tones he can produce from those wires stretched on a piece of wood. Now that's what I call an EXTRAVAGANZA!

There's moments on that Jeff Beck album but overall it's really not that good. Still, it's a decent listen but the albums that came out right before and right after this are much, much better.

Uhhh.....thankfully I won't be on that desert island while you're there. There's at least five Accept albums that are better than this. Way better. Way, way better.

I had some CP albums on vinyl back in the earl 80's. Have that boxset that came out with those albums, haven't gotten around to unwrapping it, much less listening to it. This isn't bad, but definitely does not fit into the 90's which is kind of a good thing.

For me nothing comes close to the Breaker, but the band has an extensive catalog and people do have different tastes, so I'm not surprised you would put other releases ahead of this one. I like the raw energy they brought with Breaker. At the time it came out it was damn Heavy. Even with those two ballads the album was flawless. In other words it wasn't hard for me to decide which Accept I'd take to the Island.

I'm assuming you are talking about There & Beck as an album that came before Flash and Guitar Shop that came after? If you are referring to those albums, then I agree. They are both better than Flash, and I have them, but my self imposed restriction to include only 4 Instrumental albums, kind of derailed me to Flash. In my book all three releases are 10/10. If people were here more receptive to instrumental Rock, my list would have been different.

Seen Cozy Powell play in Whitesnake on their Slide It In Tour.  That was a special thing for me to see, I love his style.  But when the first track started I had to check and make sure I clicked on the right thing.  This doesn't taint my God-like love for his drumming, but it does make me not want to hear any more solo work.

I think if Niels sees this he would way in on Breaker, if memory serves me correctly (and it usually does) this is his favorite Accept as well.  My wife recently allowed me to purchased several of their Platinum Edition remasters and they are great!  But for me this one is not their greatest album, that spot is reserved for Metal Heart and absolute assault of 80's Heavy Metal, love it!

I don't own any Beck albums though there's a couple of them that keep coming up on influential lists.  These two cuts sound very much like the times they were recorded in.  I think I'll take this one off my radar.

My guesses...

  • ROCK: Queen - The Works
  • HARD ROCK: Aerosmith - Draw The Line
  • SINGERS GONE SOLO: John Fogerty - Centerfield
