Classic Rock Bottom

Quick post for you this week.  Canadian rock band Loverboy's third album, Keep It Up, was released in June of 1983.  It followed the masterpiece Get Lucky.  It rose just as high on the US charts, reaching number 7.  It did not sell quite as much as the band's previous effort, eventually being certified Double Platinum by the RIAA.  But it's still a good album.

Singles released were Hot Girls In Love (#11), Queen Of The Broken Hearts (#34) and Strike Zone, which did not chart.  Speaking of Strike Zone, it is one of my favorite Loverboy songs.  Maybe second behind Take Me To The Top. As far as my overall opinion of the album, I always enjoyed Side A on the cassette, but I never really got into Side B.  That didn't really change when I listened to this yesterday.

Anyway, you can pick it up used on Amazon for about ten bucks, or you can pick up a two album CD with Keep It Up and Lovin' Every Minute of It on one disc.  That one is what I own, and it runs about twenty bucks.

Tracks:

1. Hot Girls In Love

2. Strike Zone

3. It's Never Easy

4. Chance Of A Lifetime

5. Queen Of The Broken Hears

6. Prime Of Your Life

7. Passion Pit

8. One-Sided Love Affair

9. Meltdown

I remember "Hot Girls In Love" but I don't think I've ever even heard this whole album before. I know I have a copy of "Get Lucky" on vinyl (at least I think I do), but I can't remember ever buying this one.

Its interesting listening to this after the Streetheart post by Yngvie...  You can hear the improvements.  Still this is not my favorite Loverboy album, I prefer their debut effort over anything else they've ever done.  What a stellar debut!  Edgy, new wavish, rock and roll.  Get Lucky continued this a bit but they mainstreamed and did it well with that one.  This one is more pop-rock than edgy anything.

This came out right after I graduated High School and then Hearts Passionworks came out around the same time.  I know this because I had both of these when I traveled to South Dakota to do some construction work for a few months.  I listened to each back and forth on the drive so I got very familiar with them.  Passionworks holds up very well while this one doesn't quite have that timeless feel to it.  They lost their edge  and maybe this was when it happened.  At the time I loved it though.  You can hear some of that edge still wanting to come out on Meltdown that's the track that works still best for me and its the closer...  This was good listen though, brought some great times and memories.  But really makes me want to go back listen to their debut...  I wish they'd remaster and deluxe edition that one!

I don't know about this album. It always seemed a minor release back then for them. Something is a bit off with this, maybe it was that were writing for MTV and the radio, moreso than on previous albums. Something about the album cover seems dark as well and it's not a dark album. It's listenable, but not as listenable as the first two albums. I like the second side better, that first track on the album is pretty weak an silly. I like Passion Pit, it has some funk.
