Classic Rock Bottom

Who? Love/Hate

Did I think that I had already posted something from Love/Hate? Yes.

Did you? Guess not?

When? 1990

Album title? Blackout In The Red Room

Allmusic.com review? Yes.

On the surface, the music of Love/Hate's debut may seem no different than most any late-'80s L.A. pop-metal, but the band's performance exudes a fury and belligerence that posers such as Poison or Warrant could never even grasp; actually, they would turn on their heels and run away screaming from it. The band literally "plays on 11," from the very first crunching power chord of the title track to the last cymbal crash of the frenzied "Hell Ca., Pop. 4." In between, they alternate the sheer power of "Rock Queen," "One More Round," and "Straightjacket" with the haunting yet beautiful melodies of "Mary Jane" and "She's an Angel." The strangely message-oriented "Why Do You Think They Call It Dope?" does stick out like a sore thumb -- no thanks to its funk-metal bassline and overtly commercial mix. But with delirious performances, such as guitarist Jon E. Love's on the massive "Tumbleweed," there is little here to criticize. Blackout in the Red Room is a very impressive album.

I guess I should be more familiar with Jizzy Pearl, but I'm not.  So I read the review and the reviewer seems to think this is a really good album.  I can't say I agree, though it has it's moments.  It reminds me some of GNR, which would make sense based on where the band comes from.  When Pearl sings high he reminds me a bit of Sebastian Bach, though not nearly as polished.

The best part of the album for me is the middle third.  If the entire album would have had that same pop, I would be in agreement with the reviewer.  Overall, it's decent enough that I would probably pick it up if I found it for a dollar or less, but I actually like the album from last week better.

Glad you liked it enough to respond.

Unlike some other person.

Good thing nobody will ever read this because I know very little about Jizzy Pearl.  And what kind of a name is Jizzy anyway?  Sounds like the naughty version of a Will Smith tune, gettin' Jizzy with it!  Or maybe his mom and dad were stoned when they named him, I mean really stoned! .

I like the heaviness of this album, it's sonically pleasing.  However the vocalist sounds almost exactly like Tesla.  Not a totally bad thing.  The guitar work is really good though.  Tumbleweed rocks hard, I love the frenetic riff!  There is a playful aspect to his music that I like.  She's An Angel is stellar!  And thats the RED track...

Interesting band!

I read where he recorded with Quiet Riot - seems like he would've worked better than that American Idol singer they got now.  But what do you care?  You're not reading this anyway..
