Classic Rock Bottom

The biggest concert venue in New York City has thrown its weight behind New York City biggest cause.

Madison Square Garden will host 12-12-12, a benefit concert for hurricane relief, on Dec. 12. No artists have been announced for the show yet, but promoters are promising to release the lineup soon.

12-12-12: A Concert for Sandy Relief is being organized by the same team that put together the Concert for New York City, the Oct. 20, 2001 charity show held in response to the 9/11 attacks. It is reasonable to assume that 12-12-12 will be a similarly star-driven event. The Concert for New York City drew many established names to the Garden, including the Who, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Jay-Z, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, and Destiny's Child. Notably (and probably not coincidentally) both the Who and the Rolling Stones have concerts in the New York metropolitan area that week.

Tickets for the show — which are not available yet — will be sold to create a pool of money that will be administered by the Robin Hood Relief Fund, the active arm of the Robin Hood Foundation. Formed in 1988 by a team of corporate executives drawn mostly from the financial services industry, the Robin Hood Foundation has contributed to hundreds of New York City nonprofits over the past three decades. The foundation's Relief Fund was established in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, and has once again become active in the wake of the storm. The Fund promises that 100 per cent of the money raised by the concert will go directly to hurricane relief.

Wouldn't surprise me if The Stones and The Who were there. They'll just happen to be in the area around that time.

The Stones have indeed been invited.

HBO among others is going to telecast the concert.

I'll catch it on HBO. Thanks!

More info....

The Dec. 12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden will have a TV audience as well.

HBO, AMC, Showtime and Sundance Channel are just four of the domestic networks that will televise the show aimed to serve as a benefit to the victims of the vicious storm that caused tumultuous damage on the East Coast several weeks ago. Other details of which networks will air the concert are still being worked out, but several more are likely to be added on.

The show will be also be livestreamed by Hulu, Yahoo and AOL.

Among the superstar acts scheduled to appear on stage are Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Who, Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder have just been added to the lineup.

Show is expected to last somewhere in the four-hour range.

There is a strong international component as well, with a TV reach in Asia, Europe and Africa. DirecTV's offshoots in Italy and Brazil are televising the concert, as as well Sundance Channel Europe and Sky 1 in Italy.

Proceeds will benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which is an offshoot of the Gotham-based philanthropic Robin Hood Foundation.

Cablevision topper James Dolan, Clear Channel President John Sykes, and Harvey Weinstein are producing the concert.

HBO has televised several concerts from Madison Square Garden in the past, including a benefit following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. For benefit shows and telethons, it is not uncommon for different networks to share TV rights.

Clear Channel has all radio rights.

Official announcement of TV partners will likely be made Wednesday.
