Classic Rock Bottom

by "a day early but still a dollar short" Scott

With the passing of Chris Squire, it seemed quite appropriate to post a playlist of Tribute songs. I've noodled around with this playlist for quite some time moving songs in and out as I come across them. But I decided to go forward with these four and ask for help from you to add to the list.

So with little words and loads of respect, I present my list of tribute songs to kick off this weeks playlist...

Asia
Gravitas
2014

1 - Valkyrie

Asia mainstays John Wetton and Geoff Downes wrote this song, which Wetton says is about a close friend of theirs who passed away a few years earlier. "It's about wishing and hoping that somebody took them to a better place," he told us.

Dire Straits
Dire Straits
1978

2 - In The Gallery

The song is also a tribute to his friend, Leeds artist Harry Phillips, who died in 1976, two years before Dire Straits released their eponymous debut album. One day he visited an art gallery in Shaftesbury Avenue, and was not impressed by what he saw. According to band member John Illsey, the exhibits were laughable, and on the way back to their South London flat, Knopfler sat in the back of the car writing furiously. "I've just got to finish something off" he said as they arrived. He sat there for a further hour and a half, but it took a little longer to work out the music. According to Knopfler, it's all a big con which is subsidized by the public purse for "all the phonies and all of the fakes" while genuine artists like Harry Phillips are "Ignored by all the trendy boys in London and in Leeds" and live - and die - in obscurity

Queen
Hot Space
1982

3 - Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)

Freddie Mercury wrote this song as a dedication to John Lennon. The music emulates different John Lennon song styles, and the lyrics are mostly about Freddie's realization that John was dead, and how real life was. "Life is Real" is related to the John Lennon lyric "Love is Real."

This song took on a new life after Freddie Mercury's death, and is now regularly performed as a tribute to Mercury as well as Lennon - particularly when performed by Kerry Ellis and Brian May on their tours (notably the Born Free tour) where a montage of Freddie Mercury images would play on screens behind the artists.

The Eagles
The Very Best Of...
2003

4 - Hole In The World

Don Henley explained in the liner notes for The Very Best Of The Eagles compilation that he penned on the darkest day in American history: September 11, 2001. "I sat down at the piano in my home studio and started putting some chords with the phrase 'hole in the world,'" he said. "Months went by, but I didn't show it to anybody. Then, other things started happening that gave additional meanings to 'Hole in the World,' particularly after the [Iraqi] war started. The fighting was supposedly over in May, and yet one or two or three of our boys were - and still are - getting killed every day, which means somebody's daddy is not coming home. So that's another 'hole' -- a huge hole in somebody's life - a child, a wife, a mother, a father, a brother, a sister."

"Reflections" from the Charlie Daniels Band comes to mind.

Also that song about the levee.

Actually the first couple of songs, that comes to my mind are danish tribute-songs for Lennon:

Kim Larsen (1981)

Dizzy Mizz Lizzy (1993)

ASIA - I never, ever was a fan of Asia. I remember this song, but I don't know from where. It's not bad, but this laid back foreigner-style was never ever MY style of music, but this song is okay, and the guitar-solo is off course fine work.

DIRE STRAITS - Another laid back-band, I never was a fan off. I bought a couple of records, yes records, but it was just because of his guitar-work, which also gets boring after a little while. It's an okay song, but......

QUEEN - The very best song on this dreadful album. This is actually a very nice track, but still not as good, as anything from "The Game". But it's a typical Mercury-song. He was a genius!! But the album Hot Shit was crap!!

THE EAGLES - Oh no. The KINGS of laid back music, and I mean that in the worst possible way!! Goddamn, this is BORING!!! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!

But I still enjoy Hidden Treassures, Scott :-)

Parody is the finest form of flattery .... Love it!

That Asia song is so damn catchy. First time I heard it, I was caught. It sticks in your head for days and days. Then, when you think it's gone, you listen to it again and it's stuck in your head again! How amazing is that??!!

This is my second favorite Dire Straits album, one I can listen to over and over again. But, I can listen to "Making Movies" more over and over again. But this is still fine stuff. Since MM wouldn't have fit in to this playlist, I will accept this song, even though "accept" might be the wrong word.

Ah, yes. "Hot Space". Either you love it or you hate it. Guess what? I love this album! Don't care that the first side has a lot of disco/dance, I JUST DON'T CARE!!!!

This Eagles song kind of bored me when it first came out, but now I think it's ok. I like The Eagles better when they rawk, but I guess you don't always get what you want.

Nice list.

4 for 4!! You like me. ... you really like me!

Listened to this yesterday, just don't have time to write my thoughts right now.  Will do so later.

Let's see, I own two of the four actual albums, but I'm pretty sure I have a different album that has The Eagles' song on it. I've almost picked up the Dire Straits album a couple of times.  I think it's pretty cheap on Amazon, maybe $4.99.

I remember that I like the first few songs on Hot Space, but I don't really remember this song at all.  The Asia song sounds terrific.  That great sounding vocal as always.  I even like the Dire Straits song.  But I can honestly say that I don't care for that Eagles tune at all.  Just never have.  And you guys know I'm a pretty big Eagles fan.

I think my favorite tribute song would be Empty Garden by Elton John, though I'm sure there are others that I just can't think of...Song And Emotion by Tesla (for Steve Clark), From The Inside by Def Leppard (for Steve Clark) & Hells Bells by AC/DC (for Bon Scott) for starters.

Enjoyed the listen Scott.
