Classic Rock Bottom

I will in the following weeks take you through my thoughts about The Beatles-catalog (Wikipedea also get a say). Since I'm a European, it will be the studio-albums released in Europe/England, and not the US-versions of the albums, that some of you may know better, and that includes the double-EP "Magical Mystery Tour", and not the album-version released in the US. But since a LOT, and I mean a LOT of the best Beatles-songs wasn't released on actual albums, I will also mention the songs, that wasen't released on the albums, but on singles/EP's around the same time of the album-releases, because as my friend Jeff did on his take on Cheap Trick (and other bands), I will give my personal opinion of an album-ranking as I go along, and a version of my ultimate Beatles Playlist, and I can't do a playlist without a LOT of the best Beatles-songs. I hope, as many as possible will join in with comments. Here I go:

"Please Please Me" was the debut-album by The Beatles, and it was released in 22nd March 1963. Of the album's 14 songs, eight were written by Lennon–McCartney (originally credited "McCartney–Lennon"), early evidence of what Rolling Stone Magazine later called (their invention of) the idea of the self-contained rock band, writing their own hits and playing their own instruments. Of course the album's peak position on the UK Album Chart was at number 1. For many years, I was a mostly fan of what Beatles released from 1966 and on, and I still think, the absolute very best music was to come. Never the less, there are some fine extremely wellknown tracks on the album (I Saw Her Standing, Please Please Me, Love Me Do and the cover of Twist And Shout). What do you think of the debut-album by The Beatles? Oh, and before this album, Beatles released the singles "Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You" on 5th October 1962, and "Please Please Me/Ask Me Why" on 11th of January 1963.

This is the box set that I own.  I thought it was possibly the US releases, but now I'm pretty sure it's the European releases.  My first disc is entitled Please Please Me.  And, I own the stereo version, not the mono version.  The cool thing about this set is that it comes with all 14 original albums, each having a CD-ROM feature that contains a mini-documentary of photos, video and audio clips relating to the album.  The two Past Masters CD's are present, as is a DVD that collects all of the mini-documentaries onto one DVD.  I paid a little over two hundred dollars for the box when it came out.  I'm gonna give you my opinion and rankings and a running playlist as well, but I'm also gonna try to include something from the booklet of each album that may not be well known.  A tidbit or nugget, if you will.  Just for fun.

I like the first album, but mostly the big hits.  In addition to those, I do like the songs Anna (Go To Him), Chains and A Taste of Honey.  But it's funny to me, with all the praise the Beatles receive for revolutionizing the LP format, this first album sounds like a simple compilation of a bunch of singles.  Not knocking it, just sayin'.

Niels, do you realize that you listed Love Me Do twice?  Also, are you gonna cover the two past masters albums?

Did You Know? The cover of A Taste of Honey is the only track on this album that features a double-tracked vocal performance by Paul.  Also, it took the band less than 10 hours to record the 10 songs needed to finish out this album (the other four songs were the two singles and their b-sides released prior to the album).

How 'bout some more useless Beatles trivia?  This comes from a book I just bought from the used record store this past weekend:

1. The following record companies turned down the Beatles: Decca, Pye, Columbia, HMV and EMI

2. George used quite a few pseudonyms when recording, including L'Angelo Misterioso, Hari Georgeson, George Harrysong and P. Roducer.
