ALBUM OF THE WEEK # 393 THE POWER STATION - THE POWER STATION (1985)

Disclaimer: All info that does not reside in my brain is gathered from wikipedia.com (mostly because Jon can't stand it) unless otherwise noted.

A supergroup is the subject of this week's Album of the Week.  We're talkin' 'bout The Power Station and their debut release.  It's self-titled and it was released in 1985.  If you are not familiar with The Power Station, you probably weren't a teenager in the 80's.  But for those folks, The Power Station consisted of Robert Palmer on vocals, John Taylor (Duran Duran) on bass, Andy Taylor (Duran Duran) on guitar and Tony Thompson (Chic) on drums.  This combination of members lent rock, funk and soul to the band's debut.

The album went Top 10 in the US, ultimately reaching the number six slot.  I noticed that Wikipedia does not have any certification information, so I did a search on the RIAA website.  It's difficult to discern from the info returned, but it appears that the album was certified Platinum.  There were three singles released with each one reaching the Top 40.  The big hits were Some Like It Hot (#6) and Get It On (Bang A Gong) (#9).  Communication didn't fare as well, although it did top out at #34.

This was a popular release.  The band's videos got big time airplay on MTV, as well as the songs getting big time airplay on the radio.  I certainly remember it, I would imagine that you do too.  The cool thing is that if you don't already own it, you can pick it up as an add on item from Amazon for 3.99.  That's very little to pay.

Fun Fact: The album is also referred to as Power Station 33 1/3, as that was a subtitle on the inner sleeve of the original album.

Wasn't their ill-fated second album featured by Jon once upon a time?  I can't find it but it seems like it was posted...  Anyway....

Some Like It Hot...  This was sooo overplayed on Mtv, and hearing it now makes me think, "is it too soon"?  It's just an OK tune, but it never really worked well for me.  That being said, I always wanted to like Duran Duran and the Taylor boys seemed to be rock core of that band, if they had one.  It was Girls On Film that kept me hoping they would get better, but it never seemed to materialize.  but here again, I think Jon posted a DD album  - wedding something or another - that I recall liking.  Who knows maybe I need to try yet again...  One more last time.

Back to this post though. Murderess and Lonely Tonight grab my attention, they are quite good.  But the backbeat is getting a bit overused and the consistent tempo is melting each song into each other... Broken only by the closers slow dulling pace, not a bad song but kind of like ending with a slow fade...

Eh... not sure I liked this enough to warrant a purchase even at such a low cost.  It's good, even interesting at points, but the production is not good and the sameness across the tracks is not working for me.  That and the 2 hit songs still sound overplayed to me.

Yeah, it was posted on the other site that shall not be named. It's titled "Living In Fear".

This is kinda cool. See, I'm transferring a majority of my music to USB sticks the first batch is on a 64gb stick and I'm thru the letter "C". I also have one that is a bunch of random albums to listen to while driving around and this is one of the albums on that stick so I can now take it off. This is taking longer than I thought.......

I don't have this version, I have the super duper remastered deluxe version which MIGHT be OOP, but it sounds really good. I don't mind listening to this occasionally, It kind of loses steams at the end of both sides, but it's fun. Also get Andy Taylor positively shredding on the geetar which is always cool. Can't disparage the rest of the band, they're all pretty good. Like the followup better because they got mean and HEAVY.

I saw the vinyl of this at a new record store downtown today for 2 dollars.  It was a pretty clean copy, should have picked it up.  Picked up 7 or 8 CD's instead.
