ALBUM OF THE WEEK # 402 BON JOVI - SLIPPERY WHEN WET (1986)

Disclaimer: All info that does not reside in my brain is gathered from wikipedia.com (mostly because Jon can't stand it) unless otherwise noted.

I've got one you've all been waiting for this week.  Especially Jon.  Released on August 18, 1986, Slippery When Wet was the first of six number one albums for Bon Jovi.  I was a fan of the band's first two albums and I remember being quite excited waiting on the premiere of the video for the first single You Give Love A Bad Name.  This was the band's third album and it was the one that put them into the Big Time.

Let's run down the list of accolades for the album.  First, as mentioned earlier, it hit number one in the US and it stayed there for 8 weeks.  The album sold over 12 million copies in the US, becoming Bon Jovi's only Diamond certified offering.  Slippery When Wet was the best selling album of 1987 and is one of the Top 100 best selling albums of all time in the US.  As far as singles go, four were released with all but one doing very well.  You Give Love A Bad Name and Livin' On A Prayer were both number 1 hits.  Wanted Dead Or Alive climbed to number 7, becoming the third Top 10 hit from the album.  Never Say Goodbye did not chart in the US.

Face it, the album was huge.  It appears to be out of print, which is a surprise, but you can get it for around five bucks used on Amazon.  That is if you don't already own it.

Did You Know: The original album cover was scrapped at the last minute due to the fear it may be banned by US record stores.

Did You Know? The two number one songs were written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child.

No!

Nope, don't own it. Maybe did at one time? Could have been on vinyl since all these songs are familiar but it's not something I revisited more than twice and I know why.

Because it's really not that good. It pandersd to the demographic that they wanted and bully for them! Other than that fifth song (which is actually pretty good, always has been) the rest are songs that I wish never reached my ear holes. If I actually did have this album, this would have been the last BJ album I ever bought.

And I'm quite proud of that and the fact that I do not own any BJ albums at this moment in time. And in the next moments in time.

Thank you very much.

You like it so much you commented twice...

I agree with your comment about pandering.  It does.  But that's what many of us liked back then.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is nothing wrong with writing songs for the masses and making a lot of money.  It is what it is.

To be honest, this is an album I probably spent a lot of time making fun of back in the day.

Now, I actually like it.

Times change.

I saw Bon Jovi on their first tour, promoting their debut album. The album I still consider their best. I enjoyed the follow up album and at the time I enjoyed Slippery When Wet, which was the last Bon Jovi album I ever purchased. Over time, my interest has waned and I have lost interest in listening to "Slippery When Wet". I normally turn the radio dial, when I hear a song from it on the radio. The first two Bon Jovi albums are all I ever have any interest in listening to these days.
