Two this week and I must say these are love 'em or hate 'em releases, since I own them you know where I stand... I've added the Bonus track titled "Glenn Song" to the end of the player, this track is only available on the Deluxe edition of the album, but thought it was a nice addition to this post as well as a fine tribute to the late Glenn Frey...

Another week here at CRB, another number one album for your review. This week we go back to 1980. Your Album of the Week is Against The Wind by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. The album was released in February 1980 and reached the top spot during the week of May 3, 1980. For six consecutive weeks the album remained at the top. It sold well, attaining a certification of 6 X Platinum. There were also four successful singles released from the LP. Two of those went Top 10 (Against The Wind at number 5 and Fire Lake at number 6).

That should be enough for any album, but here are some more nuggets regarding the album:

The album won 2 Grammy Awards in 1981 (Best Recording Package and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal).

The Album booted Pink Floyd's The Wall from the top of the Billboard chart.

This was the artist's only number one album.

Although billed as "& The Silver Bullet Band", only half of the album's tracks featured said band (1-3, 6 & 8). The other tracks featured The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.

Famous artist Dr. John performed the keyboard on Horizontal Bop.

Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmidt performed backing harmony vocals on Fire Lake. Frey also performed backing harmony vocals on the title track.

So there you are. The album is widely available. You can pick up a remaster from 2003 for only $7.99 on Amazon.

Side One:

1. The Horizontal Bop

2. You'll Accomp'ny Me

3. Her Strut

4. No Man's Land

I heard the studio version of Turn The Page by Bob Seger for the first time today. Has anybody else ever heard it? I didn't even know it existed until today. I did some amateur research and found that it was released on Seger's album "Back In '72". The album also contains a cover of The Allman Brothers song Midnight Rider and the original version of Rosalie, which was eventually covered by Thin Lizzy.
7. Come To Poppa

8. Ship Of Fools

9. Mary Lou

This week's selection is the 1976 offering from Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. Night Moves, and although it's not my favorite Bob Seger album (that would go to the follow up, 1978's Stranger In Town), it is packed with some pretty tight music. As a matter of fact, it contains my second favorite Seger tune, Main Street. If a casual Bob Seger fan were to look at the playlist, he or she would immediately recognize several songs. However, if that same person wrote off the rest of the album, he or she would surely miss some mighty fine hidden gems.

Singles released from the album are Night Moves, Main Street and Rock And Roll Never Forgets. The first was a major hit, the second was another fairly big hit, while the third was more of a minor hit. But, these 3 songs along with The Fire Down Below, Sunspot Baby, and Come To Poppa continue to get airplay today on any decent classic rock station. Of those songs, my favorites would be Main Street and Night Moves, but all six of them are really outstanding tracks.

So, out of 9 tracks, so far we have 3 excellent singles and 3 excellent album cuts. What about the other 3 songs? Well, one of those is Mary Lou, the last track on the album. This is the only one that I would possibly skip. It's not bad, but just the weakest on the album, in my opinion of course. The other two are fantastic hidden gems that you've probably never heard. Sunburst is a really cool song. It basically tells the story of a rock star, one night in the spotlight. I love the piano playing on this one. Ship Of Fools would be the other hidden gem. Another storytelling song, this one with simple but superb guitar playing. So don't write these songs off, just because you haven't heard them before.

All in all, this is probably my second favorite album by Seger. It's very easy to find on Amazon, only about 8 bucks for a remastered disc. The artwork is very simple, just a picture of Seger, but I think it's really cool.

My Favorite Song Award: Main Street

Hidden Gem Award: Very tough choice this week, but I'm going with Sunburst.

Potential Skipper: Mary Lou

Man, can somebody tell me what in the world is wrong with the Top 40 or pop music today? I noticed in the August 5, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine that Billboard's Top 40 albums include Bret Michaels' "Custom Built" (#14), Ozzy Osbourne's "Scream" (#18) and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Mojo" (#20). These are the only actual rock bands on the Top 40 album chart. That's it. Nobody else. Not even current rock bands. I'm sorry, I take that back. The Black Keys' "Brothers" (#29) and Brandon Boyd's "The Wild Trapeze" (#33) are on the chart. Has anyone even ever heard of Brandon Boyd? I'm familiar with his band Incubus, but I didn't know his name before I saw this chart. The same chart features no less than 6 Country Music artists.

By way of comparison, I looked up the August 25, 1980 chart on Billboard.com and found 5 rock bands or artists in the Top 10, not Top 40. Four of the top five albums were as follows:

The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue (#1)
Jackson Browne - Hold Out (#2)
Billy Joel - Glass Houses (#3)
Queen - The Game (#5)

The 5th album from the Top 10 was Bob Seger's "Against The Wind". And that's just the Top 10. The chart will not allow me to go past the Top 10 for some reason.

And people wanna know why we still listen to old music. I think this says it all! I'm not trying to put down what other people listen to, but it really blows!
