Notes: The River is Bruce Springsteen's fifth studio album. It is the only studio double album in his catalog. It was Springsteen's first album to reach the number one chart position. It was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance at the 1982 Grammy Awards. Springsteen initially wrote it as a single album that was to be titled The Ties That Bind. He handed it in originally that way, then took it back and expanded it. In 2015 Springsteen celebrated the album's 35th anniversary by releasing a box set titled The Ties That Bind: The River Collection. It included the 2 disc album as it was released in 1980, the single album that he initially intended for release as well as other goodies.

You can still pick up the double album on CD on Amazon for around 12 bucks. You can also pick up the previously mentioned box set for a little over 60 dollars, which is pretty good as it was about a hundred dollars when released.

I originally started this series with the idea of just adding to an ongoing thread. But as I often do these days, I've changed my mind. I'm gonna add a new, separate post for each box set I listen to. I'm also gonna change the rules slightly (since I made 'em up, I can change 'em). I plan to add reviews of any type of box set. Yep, anything at all. The only rules now are that it must be a box set and I have to listen to all music discs, view all video discs and read all of the print material included before I review it. Remember, I just decided to do this to inspire myself to actually listen to all of the box sets that I have purchased.

Volume II finds me listening to some Grand Funk Railroad. Grand Funk Railroad: 30 Years Of Funk 1969-1999 The Anthology is a three disc set that was released back in 1999. For those of you that have never heard of Grand Funk Railroad, the band was an American power trio that released it's first album back in 1969. The band was formed by Mark Farner (guitar and vocals), Don Brewer (drums and vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass). The band was named by Terry Knight (manager). It was a play on words referencing the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. The band is also often referred to as Grand Funk.

The set comes in a small box as opposed to a long box, like many of the other three and four disc box sets. There is an outer box that houses the inner, quad-fold tray inlays. There is a separate disc tray for each of the three discs. These trays contain a picture of each of the three principle band members (the pictures are up to date at the time, so around 1999). Each disc has a band member's image on it as well, but these were pictures from the band's early days. There is also a fifty page booklet with a nice band history, written by Jim Bessman, photos, complete track listing and band discography. I picked this set up on March 11, 2015 for 14 dollars. The current lowest price on Amazon is about 85 dollars.

As far as the music goes, I have to give a big approval. The first two discs are absolutely fantastic, while the third disc may suffer a slight drop off in quality, but it's still a very nice listen. Included on the discs are several unreleased songs, including three tracks by The Pack (Grand Funk's predecessor), as well as three new songs, recorded specifically for this release. The hits are present, songs like I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home), Walk Like A Man (You Can Call Me Your Man), We're An American Band, The Loco-Motion and Some Kind Of Wonderful. You also get some great album tracks, like Aimless Lady, Loneliness, Creepin' and covers of Feelin' Alright and Gimme Shelter.

Let's check out The Police this week. Outlandos d'Amour is the debut album from 1978. The album is certified Platinum in the U.S. and managed to chart at #23. Roxanne was the only single to chart in the U.S., reaching #32. This, however, was after touring, as it flopped when it was originally released.

I think this is a pretty good album. As far as The Police go, I can't decide if this one or Synchronicity is their best album. I like the first 3 tracks and tracks 6 and 7. I also love the drumming, especially on the first track. Stewart Copeland may just be an underrated drummer. Take a listen and tell me what you think.

I have to say that I've never been a "huge" fan of The Cars. I've always liked their singles, but I've never dug any deeper in their catalog. But now I have two studio albums, so this week I'll feature the debut from 1978. The album itself was huge. It sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone and although only 3 songs were released as singles, 6 of the 9 album tracks are played still today on the radio (tracks 1,2,3,6,7 and 8).

That leaves very little in the way of hidden gems. But what struck me in the process of reading about this album is how many of the songs Benjamin Orr sang. Of course, that's if Wikipedia has it's facts straight. I would imagine that Scott can confirm whether or not Mr. Orr was the lead vocalist on Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love, Moving In Stereo and All Mixed Up. I always thought it was Rick Ocasek for sure on Just What I Needed. As a matter of fact, I thought he sang all of the hits other than Drive. I also discovered that Ocasek was the sole writer of every song on this album except for Moving In Stereo.

Anyway, you can still find this quite easily. I picked it up from from Walmart for 5 dollars. You should too.

So, another year is in the books, and despite all of the talk about rock music being dead, we are still getting some great music from classic bands and newer bands alike.

The Top 10 was compiled by nominations from six of our members. Each member sent in a list of their personal Top 10 albums and I crunched the numbers. Basically, it worked like this. Each album listed received a point value ranging from 1 to 10. If an album was number one on someone's list, it got 10 points. Tenth place albums got 1 point and so forth and so on. I then looked only at albums that appeared on more than one person's list. I added up the total point value and added 1 bonus point for each list that album appeared on. That total is what determined the Top 10 list for Classic Rock Bottom. Each albums point total is in parenthesis beside the album name.

After you read the list, please comment. Let us know what you think. Also, please feel free to include your personal Top 10 Albums of 2011.

So without further delay, here are Classic Rock Bottom's Top 10 Albums for 2011.

This week's album will be short and sweet, just like Jon's Lost/Forgotten album. It's Kiss' 13th studio album, from 1985, Asylum. This one gets overlooked quite often. It's the first album to feature Bruce Kulick. I remember being excited about this album. I also remember thinking, and I still do, that it was better than the previous effort (Animalize). Everybody talks about Eric Carr's drumming on Creatures Of The Night, but I happen to think he was outstanding here as well.

Also, folks seem to think Kiss put out very little exceptional music in the 80's, but Tears Are Falling and Who Wants To Be Lonely prove that wrong (of course, Radar For Love supports the former theory quite well).

It's still easy to find if you are interested. Either way, have a safe and Merry Christmas! I hope everybody gets all of the awesome rock music they want this year (I won't, 'cause I want way too much).

Next Week: Maybe a week off to refocus, I'm not sure.

According to a movie critic (I seldom agree with movie critics, just like I seldom agree with music critics), these are the Top 200 worst movies ever. To my amusement, I have seen several of these and disagree with a few of them. Harlem Nights is a masterpiece and to keep this music related, how can anyone hate the excellent soundtrack and merits of "Joe Dirt" lol.
