Notes: The River is Bruce Springsteen's fifth studio album. It is the only studio double album in his catalog. It was Springsteen's first album to reach the number one chart position. It was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance at the 1982 Grammy Awards. Springsteen initially wrote it as a single album that was to be titled The Ties That Bind. He handed it in originally that way, then took it back and expanded it. In 2015 Springsteen celebrated the album's 35th anniversary by releasing a box set titled The Ties That Bind: The River Collection. It included the 2 disc album as it was released in 1980, the single album that he initially intended for release as well as other goodies.

You can still pick up the double album on CD on Amazon for around 12 bucks. You can also pick up the previously mentioned box set for a little over 60 dollars, which is pretty good as it was about a hundred dollars when released.

Kantner used it, extrapolating on the name of his current band, Jefferson Airplane, to refer to Blows's science fiction concept: A bunch of left-wing hippies closely resembling his San Francisco Bay Area compatriots hijack a government-built starship and head off to re-start the human race on another planet. Kantner had presaged this post-apocalyptic colonization idea on "Wooden Ships" on the last Airplane album, Volunteers, and here he expanded it out to album length with the help of members of The Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, plus assorted others, a shifting supergroup informally known as PERRO, The Planet Earth Rock And Roll Orchestra.

But where such preceding efforts as Sunfighter, Manhole, and Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun had suffered from indulgence and a lack of focus, Dragon Fly, from the first note of its rocking leadoff track, "Ride the Tiger" (a chart single), was a unified effort.

The difference, however, was crucial: Marty Balin was once again a fully integrated bandmember, writing or co-writing five of the ten tracks. And there can be little doubt that it was Balin's irresistible ballad "Miracles," the biggest hit single in the Jefferson Whatever catalog, that propelled Red Octopus to the top of the charts, the only Jefferson album to chart that high and the best-selling album in their collective lives. This must have been sweet vindication for Balin, who founded Jefferson Airplane but then drifted away from the group as it veered away from his musical vision. Like Dragon Fly, Red Octopus reflected a multiplicity of musical tastes; there were ten credited songwriters, seven of whom were in the band. If there is any consistency in this material, it is in subject matter (love songs). The album is more ballad-heavy and melodic than the Airplane albums, which made it more accessible to the broader audience it reached.

Spitfire
1976

4 - St. Charles

Spitfire was Jefferson Starship's 1976 follow-up to the chart-topping Red Octopus (1975), and it found the band in a cooperative mood. All seven bandmembers earned writing credits on at least one of the nine songs, along with eight outsiders, and even drummer John Barbata got a lead vocal on the simple rock & roll song "Big City." But the three main power centers in the group remained in place. Singer/guitarist Paul Kantner continued to turn out his lengthy, complex songs with their exhortatory, vaguely political lyrics (the five-minute "Dance with the Dragon" and the seven-minute "Song to the Sun: Ozymandias/Don't Let It Rain"). Singer Grace Slick contributed her own idiosyncratic compositions, simultaneously elliptical and passionately stated ("Hot Water" and "Switchblade"). And singer Marty Balin, whose romantic ballad "Miracles" had fueled the success of Red Octopus, wrote (or located) and sang more songs of love and pleasure ("Cruisin'," "St. Charles," "With Your Love," and "Love Lovely Love"). Weaving the three styles together were the fluid lead guitar work of Craig Chaquico and the alternating bass and keyboard playing of David Freiberg and Pete Sears. The result was an album that quickly scaled the charts, spending six consecutive weeks at number three in Billboard and going platinum.

The band had not toured in 1977, partly due to Marty Balin's reluctance to commit fully to the band. The song "Count on Me" became a Top-10 single, peaking at #8. The album itself hit #5 on the Billboard charts. A US and European tour followed which resulted in an audience riot in Germany after the band decided not to play without Grace Slick who was ill. They lost all their guitars and equipment during the riot and played one more tense show on German TV in Hamburg after which Grace left the band for one album. Marty Balin fronted the band for one more show at a Genesis concert at the Knebworth Festival in England using rented equipment. When they returned to the USA drummer John Barbata left the band after a serious car accident. This would be the end of the 1970s line-up and several new members joined the band, as well as a new record producer. Success of this album led to Jefferson Starship being contracted to provide a song for the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Only a handful of West Coast hippies bought this record originally, but it lays the blueprint for the Doobies' future radio-friendly sound: chugging rhythm guitar, stretched-out harmonies, Tom Johnston's joyful R&B vocals, and Patrick Simmons' acoustic picking. A muffled mixing job helped keep this album in the morgue, which is sad, because "Nobody" and "Greenwood Creek" rate with some of Johnston's best tunes, and they deserve issuance on a definitive Doobie Brothers compilation.

Metal machine noises introduced the sizzling title track -- an unusually compact but explosively tight group effort on which Jon Lord's organ truly shined. The somewhat tiring repetitions of "No No No" actually threatened to drop the ball next, but the fantastic single "Strange Kind of Woman" nimbly caught and set it rolling again, just in time for the innuendo-encrusted hilarity of "Anyone's Daughter," featuring one of singer Ian Gillan's first (and still best) humorous storylines to go with one of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's most uncharacteristic, bluesiest performances ever.

All three of these are songs filled with good humor, and their foundation in old-time rock & roll makes it easy to overlook how inventive these productions are, but on the more obviously tuneful and gentle numbers -- the ones that are more quintessentially McCartney-esque -- it's plain to see how imaginative and gorgeous the arrangements are, especially on the sad, soaring finale, "Back Seat of My Car," but even on its humble opposite, the sweet "Heart of the Country." These songs may not be self-styled major statements, but they are endearing and enduring, as is Ram itself, which seems like a more unique, exquisite pleasure with each passing year.

Apart from Live at Leeds, the Who have never sounded as LOUD and unhinged as they do here, yet that's balanced by ballads, both lovely ("The Song Is Over") and scathing ("Behind Blue Eyes"). That's the key to Who's Next -- there's anger and sorrow, humor and regret, passion and tumult, all wrapped up in a blistering package where the rage is as affecting as the heartbreak. This is a retreat from the '60s, as Townshend declares the "Song Is Over," scorns the teenage wasteland, and bitterly declares that we "Won't Get Fooled Again." For all the sorrow and heartbreak that runs beneath the surface, this is an invigorating record, not just because Keith Moon runs rampant or because Roger Daltrey has never sung better or because John Entwistle spins out manic basslines that are as captivating as his "My Wife" is funny. This is invigorating because it has all of that, plus Townshend laying his soul bare in ways that are funny, painful, and utterly life-affirming. That is what the Who was about, not the rock operas, and that's why Who's Next is truer than Tommy or the abandoned Lifehouse. Those were art -- this, even with its pretensions, is rock & roll.

I really don't understand the disdain for Springsteen here on Classic Rock Bottom. But it's definitely present. And although I know it's useless to try and change your mind (after all, you like what you like and you dislike what you dislike), I am posting my favorite Springsteen album this week. It's from 1984 (the year I graduated from high school) and it's called Born In The U.S.A.

It was a massive album. It opened up Springsteen's music to the masses, myself included. The article in Wikipedia regarding the album has tons of tidbits, so I'll just mention a few of them here. And as you can see from above, I am a big fan of this album. The only song I'm not crazy about is Working On The Highway.

Born In The U.S.A. is certified 15 X Platinum by the RIAA (Diamond status).

It was Springsteen's second number 1 Billboard album.

It was the best selling album of 1985 according to Wikipedia.

It produced a record-tying 7 Top 10 singles (tied with Thriller by Michael Jackson and Rhythm Nation 1814 by Janet Jackson).

The highest charting single was Dancing In The Dark at number 2.

It became the first compact disc manufactured in the United States.

It spent 4 weeks at number one before being edged by Prince's Purple Rain, which spent 24 weeks there. During that time, the two albums were numbers 1 and 2 for 18 consecutive weeks, which is still a record for static top 2 albums.

Look, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks of this album. You can listen to it if you want or not. But you are missing out. It's fantastic. The worse thing about the album is the cheesy video for Dancing In The Dark (which stars a young Courtney Cox). I'd say that probably Darlington County and No Surrender are two of the lesser known songs here, but just listen to how good they are. Even the hits are terrific, my favorite of those being Glory Days (although I do think Springsteen's vocal on the title track is one of his best ever).

This has totally blown me away. I've never been a fan of this band. Not even the chainsaw (which they employ in a cover of Dr. Hook's song Cover Of The Rolling Stone). I was gonna include the second cover from the album (It's Tricky, which is actually quite cool), but the opening line of Better Than Chicken is just too damn good to not include. Face it, this is just good ole cock-rock. The song Walk My Mile has a killer vocal if you ask me, a cross between Dan McCafferty and Brian Johnson.
Let's check out The Police this week. Outlandos d'Amour is the debut album from 1978. The album is certified Platinum in the U.S. and managed to chart at #23. Roxanne was the only single to chart in the U.S., reaching #32. This, however, was after touring, as it flopped when it was originally released.

I think this is a pretty good album. As far as The Police go, I can't decide if this one or Synchronicity is their best album. I like the first 3 tracks and tracks 6 and 7. I also love the drumming, especially on the first track. Stewart Copeland may just be an underrated drummer. Take a listen and tell me what you think.

I have to say that I've never been a "huge" fan of The Cars. I've always liked their singles, but I've never dug any deeper in their catalog. But now I have two studio albums, so this week I'll feature the debut from 1978. The album itself was huge. It sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone and although only 3 songs were released as singles, 6 of the 9 album tracks are played still today on the radio (tracks 1,2,3,6,7 and 8).

That leaves very little in the way of hidden gems. But what struck me in the process of reading about this album is how many of the songs Benjamin Orr sang. Of course, that's if Wikipedia has it's facts straight. I would imagine that Scott can confirm whether or not Mr. Orr was the lead vocalist on Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love, Moving In Stereo and All Mixed Up. I always thought it was Rick Ocasek for sure on Just What I Needed. As a matter of fact, I thought he sang all of the hits other than Drive. I also discovered that Ocasek was the sole writer of every song on this album except for Moving In Stereo.

Anyway, you can still find this quite easily. I picked it up from from Walmart for 5 dollars. You should too.

This week's album will be short and sweet, just like Jon's Lost/Forgotten album. It's Kiss' 13th studio album, from 1985, Asylum. This one gets overlooked quite often. It's the first album to feature Bruce Kulick. I remember being excited about this album. I also remember thinking, and I still do, that it was better than the previous effort (Animalize). Everybody talks about Eric Carr's drumming on Creatures Of The Night, but I happen to think he was outstanding here as well.

Also, folks seem to think Kiss put out very little exceptional music in the 80's, but Tears Are Falling and Who Wants To Be Lonely prove that wrong (of course, Radar For Love supports the former theory quite well).

It's still easy to find if you are interested. Either way, have a safe and Merry Christmas! I hope everybody gets all of the awesome rock music they want this year (I won't, 'cause I want way too much).

Next Week: Maybe a week off to refocus, I'm not sure.

The show opened with Geddy and Alex in Jr High. They even spoke to their parents and showed clips of Alex arguing with his parent about dropping out of Grade 12. Kind of cool to see these guys as normal kids fussing with their parents. They did a great job highlighting John Rutsey, I didn’t realize he was as integral to the band as he was. They also explained his departure as being health related. This on the cusp of their first tour. Rutsey was apparently diabetic and enjoying the rock the roll lifestyle a lot. They really felt he would not survive the tour so they auditioned drummers and that’s how Peart got the job. Geddy poked fun of Neil being the "New Guy" a couple times throughout the documentary.

The list of peers paying homage to the band was pretty cool to. Great comments about their dedication, songwriting, lyrics, and some really cool stories about all of their different periods of style. Two come to mind right away... 1) 2112 came about because the band was not willing to compromise what they were about, at that time the record execs were not happy with Caress of Steel and were telling the band to change directions. 2112, was not a change, but a bold statement to the execs that they would not. The success of 2112 afforded the band the luxury of never having to answer to the execs again. That’s a pretty powerful album... and 2) around the same time the band was looking to change their stage image and went through a period of "robe wearing". While on tour in support of UFO, Rush would take the stage only to find fuzzy slippers tacked to the floor beneath their microphones. Apparently, UFO thought the slippers went better with the robes... All sorts of great anecdotes for you....

They spent a great deal of time talking about the different periods of Rush. Stuff like why Permanent Waves was so different, why the keyboards, how did they get back to guitar oriented rock. I will let you watch those parts, they were the most interesting for me...

They missed talking about Presto and Roll the Bones, only a very small mention of Presto. I am not sure if this was edited out, which I think is the case, or if they intentionally went from Hold Your Fire to Counterparts for some other reason. Will have to get the DVD and see...

They did talk about Neil's struggles with the public and the trials of his life when he through the losses of his daughter and then his wife. It was good to see him talk about it and for the fans to get a chance to understand him better...

All in all, the band is a solid unified front, a stronghold of friendships and a musical bond that I think makes them a one of a kind that we will never get to experience again.. I’ve left so much out, but I think it would spoil a lot of great content. I hope you are able to watch it...
