Classic Rock Bottom

Day 6
Dear Diary,

DING! DI... DING! DI... that's the sound of two HALF correct answers for today's selections and with that, the game takes a dramatic turn. Scott half correctly guessed Prism, leaving out the title of the CD which was, "Beat Street" a term associated with break dancing etc., thus earning only 300pts from the possible 600. Another half correct guess came from Jon, who in a similar fashion figured out the Dire Straits connection (which was the hard part) and left it wide open for someone to (he's lucky no one did) steal the other points. Perhaps it's time for a reminder, these clues contain... well, clues for both, the artists AND the album in question. So, "read, ponder, research", if you will.
Meanwhile... The current standing is:
Scott 600pts
Jon 500pts
Everyone Else 0pts
The game just got a bit more interesting.

In other news... From the few selected ones reaching the Island. A guy was caught by the Spanish Border Police, with a huge bulge between his legs. Usually these things don't raise suspicions, real or fake, but... when you are entering another country, something like a bulge between your legs could trigger all sorts of red flags. Now, if the said fellow was from Mexico, he might have gotten away with a claim of being related to Roberto Esquivel Cabrera, but he was from Costa Rica. Here is an idea buddy, if you want to pull something like this off, at least grow a porn mustache. Make it little bit less conspicuous. You know what I mean? I can tell this guy was lacking imagination, because the content of the "bulge" wasn't very original, either. It was cocaine. You want to be in the business of trafficking? Hide it! Don't think: "My penis is too short, no one will notice the extension". Instead, shove it up your f**king a**. Obviously the guy never saw an episode of Shameless. Which is shame. Otherwise he would know the drill. Emphasis being on a: DRILL.

As for the life on the Island itself... Well, things aren't going the way I thought it will. I'm starting to get sceptical. With every passing day the experience seems to feel less and less like a reward and more like my friends were trying to get rid of me. Perhaps there was too much BJ and not enough JB (Justin Bieber)? Speaking of Bon Jovi... It was Jon who referred to them first as BJ in a same paragraph as he mentioned... Swallow. Are you trying to say something? Just spit it out! OK, So, where are the girls I've been promised? They said, there's going to be A LOT... And while that still might be true, I'm yet to encounter one. Note to myself: Next time my friends talk about girls... Ask them to describe a female... Just to be sure they've seen one before.

I bet you are curious about that Hard Rock clue. Am I right? Well, scroll down and behold...

1. DIRE STRAITS - Your Latest Trick
from "Brothers In Arms" CD ℗ 1985/1996

What can I say about this album that haven't been said before? I was always impressed by Mark Knopfler's playing. Especially, since he is a self thought guitarist. As much as I like the other Dire Straits albums, it was Brothers In Arms that haven't had a single track I would skip, while listening. Although, my favorite DS tune is Private Investigation, I'm bringing Brothers In Arms to the Island. Yeah, all in all a great band who knew the importance of quitting while they were ahead. I'm glad they're not watering down their legacy.

2. PRISM - Modern Times
3. PRISM - Nightmare
4. PRISM - Wired
5. PRISM - Dirty Mind
from "Beat Street" CD ℗ 1983/2008

Prism is one of those bands that you probably heard of, yet they remain obscure, even here in Canada, from where they originate. This statement is true, for I would not buy Beat Street if it wasn't for Richie Zito's involvement. In fact this put together for a purpose line up, only had Henry Small as a member from the previous effort (and even he isn't original) But he did enlist help of few notable session musicians. So, if you are going to dispute this albums true Prism authenticity, I won't fight you. However, that aside, the CD is full of great, catchy AOR songs that fell victim to record company machinations. The list of the "other" musicians include: Alan Pasqua (Santana, Holdsworth) Mike Baird (drummer for many AOR projects), as well as backup vocalists Timothy B. Schmit (Eagles), Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Bill Champlin (Chicago).

6. NIGHTWING - Let Me Be Your Lover
7. NIGHTWING - Next Saturday
8. NIGHTWING - The Machine
9. NIGHTWING - The Last Song
from "Stand Up And Be Counted" CD ℗ 1983/1998

How much influence can looks have on the artists fame? Well, there is Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and few others to confirm the suspicion is valid, but is the opposite also true? I mean, let's say your bass player get's crowned to be one of the ugliest musicians in the business (by NME), will that hinder the whole bands chance for fame? Will it? Well, I'll let you answer that query yourself, while I'm rephrasing my question: How much do you know about NIGHTWING? Me? I know quite a bit and the only two albums I don't have in my possession is their first and last project. I also know, that often they've been mislabeled as NWOBHM soldiers, when in fact they played Hard Rock, with Prog Rock tendencies. Stand Up And Be Counted is my favorite album, for many reasons. Outstanding songs and performances are the two obvious ones and the bands expansion onto keyboards by Kenny Newton (Nutz) and vocals by Max Bacon, (Bronze, GTR) is the third one. So, what do you do, with a blunt insult to your appearance? You open the album with "Let Me Be Your Lover", of course. Used to have this one on a vinyl, which got lost during the migrations. I had to live without it, until it became available on CD. The time in between, seemed like forever.

Not a fan of this DS album. If this was me, it would 100% be Making Movies.

Prism is ok. Nothing really special about 'em stands out, at least to me.

This isn't Nightwing! Nightwing is goth rock, dammit! Oh, wait. That's Nightwish. Still, this sounds nothing like them. Why is that? This is  pretty good. I've heard of them but don't think I've ever listened to them. Maybe I'll pick some up. Maybe not. We'll just see.  Wonder what their favorite movie is. Could it be......Nightwing?
