Classic Rock Bottom

Day 8
Dear Diary

DING! DING! DING! Yet another exciting week, which turned the game top side down. Before we go any further, SPOILER ALERT (for Jon, only): Never was, never is and never will be Yanni on MY Island. Got it? (However, I reserve the right to possibly... maybe... likely own one of his CDs.) Let me remind you all, Yanni was Jon's choice for the Singers Gone Solo. What's next? Kenny G for Guitarist Gone Solo, huh? Shabba Dabba Zoo. He should learn a thing or two from Scott, for Scott was not lazy this time and took a full advantage of the points, by correctly answering the Rock entry: ZZ TOP - El Loco. Of course, Jon got it too, just not fast enough. Therefore, no rewards for him. Sorry, perhaps you shouldn't have wasted your Singers Gone Solo guess on a shenanigan. Oh, and stick to one guess per entry, will ya? Or points would be further spliced. No exceptions. This is not a game of, list as many artists as you can. "It's better to give one correct answer, than stab twice in the dark." And with that wisdom, here comes the current standing:
Scott was catapulted back to the top with 1400 pts
leaving Jon stuck in the middle with his 1000 pts
while Everyone Else licks the floor clean 0f pts

Global News... Remember my concern of few posts back of being invaded by the Aliens? Well, it's not my paranoia anymore. A man discovered a frozen body of an extraterrestrial in Irkutsk, Siberia. Thankfully, there is no need to be alarmed, because the little green bugger got his arm and leg chewed off by a Siberian Tiger... no doubt, and he was left there to freeze to death. That'll teach them not to joke, with us. I bet, he was kicking like a mule and squealing like a pig. Nanu-Nanu THAT! Of course, the Russian Interior Ministry and Kremlin tried to blame the whole thing on a student (who else?), under whose bed they found the ET made of, wait for this... bread crumbs, covered in chicken skin. Are you kidding me? What held the bread crumbs together. The world famous Russian Unity? Not to mention, I seriously doubt any student in Russia would waste so much food on a hoax. Where are the bumps on the skin from the feathers? And why would a student go all the way to Siberia to plant it? Nah, It was an Alien, alright. The truth is out there. THEY just don't want you to know it. But I do.

Island News... Jon mentioned something about building a hut and I'm happy to say, I'm almost done with mine. Watching those Survivor shows, I picked up few tricks. For example, they don't use nails. Silly. I was prescient enough to hit the Home Hardware store before I got here and bought me a whole bunch of copper nails. It literally speeds up the process and I found another use for them, as well. Whenever I venture into the deep parts of the jungle, I drive few spikes in the trees, so I can find my way back. Recently, I noticed these trees started to wane, somewhat. Have no idea why's that, but it's kind of neat. Feels like the nature is trying to reward my diligence and make my job easier. Before, I couldn't see the jungle for the trees. Now I can. I think, I'll keep doing this... for as long as I have copper nails, or the time comes to leave the Island. Whichever comes first. You're Welcome Nature! I Love You.

Oops! Break time. Drop the Hammer and whatever else is in your hands and fire up those drum beats:

1. ZZ TOP - Heaven, Hell Or Houston
from "El Loco" CD ℗ 1981/2013

Beeeeeeeards!

2. JUDAS PRIEST - United
from "British Steel" CD ℗ 1980/2001

Back where I lived, there was a list of Top 100 Albums presented annually on the first day of May, via Radio waves. The list was dominated by various Pop and Rock music, including few classic Hard Rock albums, but when it came to Heavy Metal, British Steel was pretty much the only one to crack it. May 1st. was also a national holiday, so I would be walking around the city, with a transistor / tape recorder unit in my hand to capture the program, in case my attention got divided. British Steel was constantly climbing, on a year to year basis. Later, I dropped this practice and didn't sit around the Radio wasting my day to follow the list, but British Steel remained to be my favorite NWOBHM album. Back then, I was mesmerized by the bands image from the back cover. United was and still is my favorite track. For my money, it's the perfect companion to Queen's - We Will Rock You. As if they were cut from the same cloth. I also have a movie clip in my mind that plays whenever I hear United. It's a non existing Smurfs adventure, where they get divided by Gargamel, from the onset. However, after putting their differences aside, one-by-one they start gathering on top of the hill, above his shack, to bring the fight to him. UNITED plays in the background.

3. TAMPLIN ft. SCOTT VAN ZEN - Goin' All The Way
4. SCOTT VAN ZEN - Music Box
5. TAMPLIN ft. SCOTT VAN ZEN - Straight Between The Eyes
6. TAMPLIN ft. JOEY TAFOLLA - Take 'Em Back
7. SCOT VAN ZEN / TAMPLIN / ROGER MIELKE - Armageddon / Holdin' On / The Chase
8. TAMPLIN ft. SCOTT VAN ZEN - Goin' Home
9. JOE DIORIO / LANNY CORDOLA / JEFF BERLIN - All The Things You Are
from "An Axe To Grind" CD ℗ 1990

The first time I laid my eyes on this CD, I was convinced Tamplin was a guitarist (and he is). However, it turned out, he is mostly known to be the singer of such fine Christian Metal acts as: Magdallan and Shout. He is also a Vocal coach, at his own academy. This was his first solo CD and the moniker "Friends" is not just there as an act of politeness. His "friends" really got to shine on the CD. They even play a song or two, without Ken Tamplin's involvement. In case you are wondering who these "friends" are, here is the breakdown. Guitarists: Scott Van Zen (sounds familiar? He wrote few songs for Kiss), Lanny Cordola (House Of Lords, Giuffria), Joe Diorio (Jazz legend), Joey Tafolla (Jag Panzer). Bass: Chuck Wright (Quite Riot, Giuffria, HOL, Impellitteri, etc.) David Sikes (Giuffria, Boston), Jeff Berlin (if you paid attention to LTTP, you know him). Drums: Ken Mary (Chastain, HOL, Fifth Angel, Alice Cooper, etc.). Highlights: Check out one of the best guitar duels between Scott Van Zen and Ken Tamplin in the Goin' Home intro, while All The Things You Are, perfectly blends Jazz, with Metal.

I love that ZZ Top album, its another one I "borrowed" out of my brothers LP collection back in the day, that and of course every guy in his early teens love the Tube Snake Boogie...  heck, practically serenaded all my dates back then with this.  Don't know why it never worked like they said it would... oh well...

Priest on the other hand well they rocked my world with Hell Bent for Leather and I never looked back, well I did go back into their catalog but you know what I mean.  British Steele is in the Masterpiece range of albums IMO!  Untied being the supposed anthem, but that's the least of the substance on this one.  Great album!!

Tamplin?  never heard of 'em...

  • HARD ROCK:  Creed?
  • AOR:  Journey - Frontiers
  • MELODIC ROCK: Hungarian, right like I would have a guess for this!  hahahahahaha

Kind of a racist album cover for that ZZ Top band, so I won't listen to it.

Never heard this JP album or song before. Were they big here.

T&F was pretty good. Some parts reminded me of Queen with the vocalising and I do like the jazzy rock stuff.
