Classic Rock Bottom

Day 12
Dear Diary,

There wasn't a single correct answer for today's selection. Not even with my extra help. Well, everything stays same, while we explore the...

Global News... I'm guessing we all get somewhat embarrassed when we can't control our winds. Not Sean Sykes Jr from Kansas City, Missouri, though. Not him. You see, past September Sean found himself in police custody, (for a petty crime) when the detective who interrogated him suddenly ended the session, because, as he would put it, Sean "leaned to one side of his chair and released a loud fart before answering. Mr. Sykes continued to be flatulent and I ended the interview." So he got away, just by talking through his a**. Who knew, that was the right response when you find yourself in a difficult position? Not me. Just think about the amount of grief I could have saved myself every time I was sent to the principal's office, by following his example. Now this is where it gets hairy. Recently, the police busted Sean again. Surprise, surprise. This time for a firearm and cocaine possession, with intent to sell. Now that's a bummer. Let me see him talk his way out of this one.

Island News... Well, the Island have seen better days, that's for sure. The good news is, the locusts are gone. Don't ask. I just walked out the hut and they weren't there. The bad news is, there is no vegetation left. Nada. Nill. Zilch. It is what it is, but I can't complain. Few of these grasshoppers were just laying there on the ground, for easy picking. I guess, they ate themselves to death. I tried to roast one. Hmm... Not bad. It tastes like... Chicken... Popcorn style. Mmmm.

Now behold the music to which the clues baffled Jon, Scott and Everyone Else:

1. TRIUMPH - Carry On The Flame
2. TRIUMPH - Running In The Night
3. TRIUMPH - Headed For Nowhere
4. TRIUMPH - Rock You Down
from "Surveillance" CD ℗ 1987

It is the last album Triumph made, with Rik Emmett. The highlight would be the guitar trade off in the solo section of "Headed For Nowhere", with Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs) dueling against Rik in a fiery exchange of musical notes.

5. SAXON - Never Surrender

6. SAXON - Play It Loud
7. SAXON - And The Bands Played On
8. SAXON - Fire In The Sky
9. SAXON - Denim And Leather
from "Denim And Leather" CD ℗ 1981/ 1996

In '79? I set the spirit free.

10. JON BUTCHER - I'm Only Dreaming
11. JON BUTCHER - Might As Well Be Free
12. JON BUTCHER - Live Or Die
13. JON BUTCHER - Beating Drum
14. JON BUTCHER - The Mission
from "Pictures From The Front" CD ℗ 1989

You know his Blues side. (Barefoot Servants - LTTP #22) Here is his AOR affiliation. This was the first album I heard from Jon Butcher. Well, sort of. I used to have a pen pal, with whom I was trading LP's copied to cassettes. He sent me Pictures From The Front, when it came out and I truly enjoyed Side A. We always left a bit of a blank space between the Side changes, so I wasn't overly worried when Side B didn't stat to play right away. However, the blankness went on until the end of the cassette. He forgot to tape Side B. Soon after that I moved and the missing tunes left a big hole in my listening experience for long time to come. Later, I was able to find few other releases from Jon Butcher and his Axis, but "Pictures" was a hard discovery. On my first trip to Record Land in Calgary, I found "Pictures" and "Wishes" at the same time (to my huge excitement and surprise) sitting on the lowest shelf, in the store. The shelf was practically down to the floor, so I bet this was the only reason no one ever picked it up before me. And all the other patrons thought I was nuts to squat so low to check out the selection at the bottom. Huh!

ELO--A New World Record

Kim Mitchell

Boxcar Willie

My guesses...

  • ROCK:  Jon may be right about ELO but I believe he got the album wrong, that would be TIME...
  • GUITARISTS GONE SOLO:  I'm pleading the 5th as described last week, this category is not for me.
  • +BONUS:  Can't help but think this has something to do with Ritchie Blackmore and Blackmores Night, so thats my guess

I first heard Triumph when a buddy of mine threw on, what was then, the new Rock and Roll Machine album and my ears perked up.  But it was shortly after that when the band released Just A Game and that album cemented my love for their music.

Saxon?  Believe or not I've never heard this album just a couple select tracks like the title track.  The title track is OK, but it was never anything that made me want to hear more.  I'll come back and give this sampling a try...

Even though you're wrong about ELO you'll probably still be right. You know, like that Iron Maiden one.

I have all of these and must say that Triumph becomes more silly the more I listen to them. That song "Rock You Down" has terrible lyrics. Quite laughable, actually.

Saxon is Saxon. You get what you get with Saxon and it's quite fun.

At one point I was going to post this Jon Butcher album and then got caught up in other things. It's a fine album but I really wish someone would re-release "Wishes" by Jon Butcher Axis. The price for that album is quite high and I think it was his biggest selling one or the one that may be his most well-known.

There is one "Wishes" CD online for $10 + $4 shipping from the States. The seller seems reliable with a 100% rating. That looks reasonable to me.
