Classic Rock Bottom

My recent catalog review of AC/DC was a ton of fun, but interesting enough this playlist is what came from it! A Blues based playlist from an AC/DC catalog review. Listen all the way through and you'll see....

Enjoy!

Journey
Departure
1980

1 - Walks Like A Lady

I didn't like this song when it came out, I LOVE THIS SONG NOW!!! And truly its a treasure in the Journey catalog, nothing like it since has been recorded, nor will there be unless Rolie comes back in, and that's not gonna happen. So if you wanna hear some blues from Schon and Rolie? See Santana IV.

The third and final album of what could be called Journey's cocoon phase (Escape would give birth to a fully formed butterfly and put the band through the stratosphere), 1980's Departure would also be the quintet's last with keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie. Produced by Geoff Workman and Kevin Elson (essentially both engineers turned producers), the album continued to build on the band's previous two recordings, but offered an added edge, arrangement-wise. This was likely due to the fact that the band had walked into Automatt Studios with 19 new tunes and proceeded to record most of them live, eventually trimming down to 11 songs. Catapulted all the way up to number eight on the Billboard Top 200, Departure was the band's highest charting album to date.

Thin Lizzy
Nightlife
1974

2 - Still In Love With You

When you first listen to Thin Lizzy albums you really get the feel of the band, but what you don't get is their range. That's takes some more hearing. But its there in a big way!

It's curious that Night Life -- the first album Thin Lizzy recorded for Mercury, the first album to feature guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, the album that in many ways kicked off their classic era -- is in many ways a complete anomaly within their catalog. It's a subdued, soulful record, smooth in ways that Thin Lizzy never were before and rarely were afterwards. To be sure, the title Night Life is accurate but not in the sense of this providing a soundtrack for a night out on the town -- quite the opposite actually. This is the soundtrack for an intimate night in, either alone or as a pair, since it has moments ideal for either contemplation or seduction. There are still some moments of tough, primal rock & roll -- there's the funky workout of "It's Only Money" and the nasty "Sha-La-La," both excellent showcases for Gorham and Robertson -- but they stick out among the jazzy, soulful whole, even if they never quite disrupt the mood. And it's that mood that's so appealing about Night Life -- it's a warm, soulful sound that resonates in ways Thin Lizzy's earlier records didn't.

Scorpions
In Trance
1975

3 - Sun In My Hand

This is a recent find. I took a chance on it and WOW am I glad I did. The first time this song came on, I had to hit repeat. Uli in the band is a a really cool thing!

The Scorpions' third release, In Trance, continues to display their high-energy music, which is impossible to ignore. With the eyebrow-lifting "Dark Lady" as the opening track, the album immediately captures the listener's attention and keeps it all the way until the end. The interesting title track is clearly the best song of the album, but singles such as the fast-paced "Robot Man" and the hard-rocking "Top of the Bill" also stand out as highlights. Excellent singing and powerful music make this the best Scorpions recording working with Uli Jon Roth.

AC/DC
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
1976

4 - Ride On

OK, I have heard every single ACDC song ever put out on record/cd/box-set recently and this is the one song that I keep coming back to. So freakin' good!

There's a real sense of menace to "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," the title song of AC/DC's third album. More than most of their songs to date, it captured the seething malevolence of Bon Scott, the sense that he reveled in doing bad things, encouraged by the maniacal riffs of Angus and Malcolm Young who provided him with their most brutish rock & roll yet. But for as glorious as the title track was, the entire album served as a call to arms from a group that wanted nothing more than to celebrate the dirtiest, nastiest instincts humans could have, right down to the insurgent anti-authority vibe that runs throughout the record. Take "Big Balls" -- sure, it's a dirty joke, but it's a dirty joke with class overthrow in mind. There's a sense on Dirty Deeds that AC/DC is storming the gates -- they're problem children sick of waiting around to be a millionaire, so they're gonna make their own money, even if they take down others as they go. That's what gives Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap its supercharged, nervy pulse; there's a real sense of danger to this record, something that can't be hidden beneath the jokes.

JOURNEY - Never will be a fan of this very american band (remember, I'm not that fond of not very good very english or very danish bands, for that matter), but this song ain't half-bad, kind of just like Journey. They are only half-good imo. I don't care, if I ever hear it again.

LIZZY - Much better. Awesome, just awesome guitar-solos!! I need to listen to some Lizzy again, one of these days.

SCORPIONS - Kind of like Journey, for me only a half-good band. I remember reading about Uli Jon Roth in Kerrang! in the 80's. I guess he's the guitarist on this album? He looked like a hippie. This sounds a bit "hippiest". It makes me think of U2's "Bullet The blue Sky". I don't really care for this guitar-solo. Nah, not a good song, this.

AC/DC - This song, is the one, I've heard most times out of these. Actually, it's not among my favorite AC/DC-songs. Not anywhere near. It's not bad, it's just too slow imo. Bon Scott is awesome, though.

Didn't like that Journey song when it came out or when you first heard it? Either way, you had no taste in music. Still don't, but that's another conversation for another time. Am I right????

Can't go wrong with Thin Lizzy!

Weird, I had this urge to listen to old Scorpions next week, and I still am but I'm sticking with "Virgin Killer", maybe "Taken BY Force" but probably the former. This is an awesome song though.

I remember the first time I heard this song I thought it was weird since it was so not AC/DC. You know, because they rocked, am I right? Got this album after "Back In Black" because it was released here then and cut school to get the cassette. Think I mentioned that before, but whatever.

Anyway, I liked it, but it seemed out of place. AM I RIGHT????

You know, in a way it kinda reminds me of "Night Prowler". Am I RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT??????

You are definitely right!
