Classic Rock Bottom

One of my favorite and most quoted lyrics comes from REO Speedwagon's song titled 'Breakaway' from their highly underrated REO album (the one with the cow skin on it), anyway, the lyrics go like this...

...some songs have no meaning, some songs try to hard, try to say it all and end up sayin' nothin'

Some bands are too serious with their political messages, good, evil, good vs evil, emotional, relationships, and love love love everywhere! UGH!!! Music can be too serious so this week were gonna lighten things up, a lot, and go with the some fun cool rock and roll from bands who know how to have fun and possess a sense of humor. Now were not talking about Weird Al parodies, or blatant attempts at humor. These bands can do it naturally...

Listen, you'll hear what I mean...

Joe Walsh
There Goes The Neighborhood
1981

1 - Things

Walsh recorded There Goes The Neighborhood while he was a member of the Eagles, and he got some help with his vocal technique from Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Regarding this song, he told the BBC, "There's a track called 'Things,' and I heard the music before the words: I couldn't quite think what to write the song about, so I made a list of things that there were possibly to write a song about, and I ended up with a list about ten pages long, so I thought I should write this song about all the things there are – did you ever stop and think of how many things there are? So that turned into a song, and it's a little overwhelming to hear the first time, but if you listen to it three or four times, I think I covered most of the things there are."

Foghat
Rock & Roll Outlaws
1974

2 - Chateau LaFitte '59 Boogie

Rock and Roll Outlaws is a joy: "Eight Days on the Road" is a hard-charging tune about the touring life that became a live favorite, and the good-time raver "Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie" is one of the most exhilarating rockers in the Foghat catalog. "Blue Spruce Woman" is another crafty rocker, benefiting from a witty lyric about a nature-loving woman and some of the gutsiest guitar riffs on the album. It should also be noted that these high points are given an additional shot in the arm by Nick Jameson's sympathetic production, which manages to bring out a sharpness of detail in the sound without cutting back on its heaviness.

Rush
Caress of Steel
1975

3 - I Think I'm Going Bald

In a 2004 interview, Geddy Lee explained: "We were touring a lot with Kiss in those days, and they had a song called 'I think I'm goin' Blind [just goin' blind].' So we were talking the piss out of that title by just coming up with this. Pratt (a nickname for Neil Peart) came up with this line, 'I think I'm going bald,' because Alex is always worried about losing his hair, even when he was not losing his hair. So he would try all kinds of ingredients to put on his scalp. And I think it just got Neil thinking about aging, even though we weren't aging yet and had no right to talk about that kind of stuff yet. It would be much more appropriate now. And it just became a kind of funny song, even though the song is not funny, in terms of sentiment, it kind of is, and the music is really goofy. A lot of people mistake us for being deadly serious, but some of our songs are just plain goofy."

AC/DC
High Voltage
1976

4 - She's Got Balls

Which story is true?

In Paul Stenning's book AC/DC: Two Sides to Every Glory: The Complete Biography, the story behind this song is revealed. Bon Scott joined the band in September 1974, and at some point his wife complained he'd never written a song about her; lead guitarist Angus Young said: "So he wrote She's Got Balls and she left him!"

According to Mojo magazine, Bon Scott wrote the lyrics in a drunken state. He said in an interview at the time: "When I listen to it back the next morning, I think, hey, did I say that? Did I think that? But out of it you can usually get some pretty good stuff. I'd play it to my mum and if she said, 'That's not very nice.' I'd keep it."

JOE WALSH - "SCOTT-ROCK ALERT!!!!"  This is as much fun as...listening to The Eagles.

FOGHAT - This is MUCH better. Sounds like a cross between Nazareth (the start), Slade and Mott The Hoople. I like this one. GREAT song from that periode of time. I haven't paid much attention to Foghat before. AOTW, RJ?

RUSH - I had no idea about, that Rush had made a song to take the piss on kiss. Now that's funny. I haven't heard this album more than maybe once, but I remember this song, because of the lyrics. Not the best Rush-album, but never the less better than all the Scott-rock ever made.

AC/DC - Well, that agrees with this week's VOTW. I've recently read a book about AC/DC, that especially concentrated on the bon Scott-years (as I would had written it), but I can't remember, which of the stories appeared in that book. both of them, if I'm not mistaken. Great lyrics, but not one of the best Scott-songs. But what an album!! I remember listening to this album back in the middle of 1977, and was convinced, that it was Punk-rock.

I kinda like this Scott Rock thing! I could string a series together if you'd like....

I can see the humor in 3/4 of the songs here, so I guess I'm missing the humor in one of these songs?

Of course, you COULD have played ILBT from JW, but you also could have played a bunch of JW songs since there's lots of humor going 'round with him.

I don't have that Foghat album, but I do have this song. Outside of the albums I have, I've really had no desire to pick up other Foghat albums. I like what I have, but something makes me not want to buy any others.

That Rush song. One of those song titles you had to look at twice because you thought you read it wrong. Those guys!

AC/DC and their song titles. Those guys!

Nice list, but I'm still missing the humor in one of the songs......

True... Buts it's still a fun tune from a fun band. I couldn't play that JW tune you mentioned, this is a family oriented forum.

Too bad. I was thinking about posting the album from whence it came.

you can still play it unless your forum is as family oriented as mine is...

Big Balls by AC/DC...now that's a funny song.

So I listened to this the other day and completely forgot to comment on it.  Until now...

Walsh - What a character.  I bet it would be fun to hang out with this dude.  I only have a couple of Joe Walsh albums, but I'd like to pick up some more.  Lyrically, the song is more silly than funny.  If I didn't like Joe Walsh I'd probably call them cheesy.  But this song has a great feel to it.  Life Of Illusion is similar to this for me.  I never really cared for the song or paid much attention to it until it was featured prominently in The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Foghat - Definitely one of the coolest band names ever.  I remember my sister loving the song Slow Ride.  I think she had the live album and played the song a lot.  Other than a couple of other songs, I can't say I'm a huge fan.  It's definitely bar room boogie.  It's pretty dang good.  Some really nice slide guitar.  Lyrically, it is not a masterpiece, but I don't think that's what you're after here.  Personally, I'd classify this as more of a drinking song, but I do see what you mean as far as just lightening things up a bit and having a good time.  Love the slide.

Rush - This is pretty funny.  Especially once you've read the background on the song.  And truth be told, the intro sounds Kiss"ish".  The song that they are making fun of is quite funny as well, but it's also one of my favorite Kiss tunes.

AC/DC - Bon Scott had an incredible ability to deliver tongue in cheek lyrics.  Like the song here or in the song Big Balls.  His delivery is what sells it.  Many other folks couldn't do it.  But his inflections are spot on.  Don't know which of the stories above is true, but I prefer the first story.  That sounds way more rock and roll!

Nice job here.  I love serious, usually dark lyrics.  But it is fun to just let all that stuff go occasionally and veg out with something that's not so serious.
