Classic Rock Bottom

This week we have the 1993 release from Toto, titled "Kingdom Of Desire".

It's an album that slipped thru the cracks for me, and here's why: after ""IV" I was totally on the Toto bandwagon. Great album, even though it wasn't my "style" back then, so it was something of a guilty pleasure (couldn't admit to my metal brethren that I liked the album for fear of being shunned).

The next album, "Isolation" was a total letdown to me. I listened to it maybe once and that was it. No more Toto.

In 1988, while listening to a rock station in Omaha, I heard a mystery track where callers could vote if the song was a smash or trash. Even though it was a fantastic song, it was voted as trash. The DJ then let us know that the song played was "Stay Away" from Toto and I was hooked again. The next day I went out and bought the album, titled "The Seventh One". The album was pretty good, but I was expecting more songs along the lines of "Stay Away" (the song is hard rock for those that have never heard it, kind of a surprise to me since it was Toto and I was always under the impression that they had kind of turned into soft rock, cause that's what sold, at least for Toto).

After that album, I really didn't hear much from Toto. About 11 years later, I heard some rumblings about a new Toto album, titled "Mindfields" so I went ahead and searched it down. Not a bad album, but not a great album. However, I was hooked on finding Toto stuff so I started checking out their back catalogue, seeing what I had missed.

While doing the research thing, I was hearing a lot about "Kingdom Of Desire", how it was a total rock album, a heavier Toto. This I needed. This album was long out of print and the asking price was very high (100 bucks). So I waited and waited and finally found it for a reasonable price, around $15.

For once, the description of the album was dead on. This is not the "softer side of Toto". This is Toto that rocks. From the first song till the last, I was hooked. So hooked I went on a massive Toto buying spree and discovered that I actually like all their albums. But this album, along with their final (?) album ("Falling In Between") are tops on my list.

This album looks cool. I can't wait to listen to it. I have Toto's greatest hits so I don't know any deep catalog stuff. And take this as a request to one day have Falling In Between on LAOTW.

One other thing, I would like to steal the Smash or Trash idea for a thread. Do you mind?
Yeah, that would be kinda cool.
Isolation!!! A total letdown???????????? Ho ho, it's one of my favorite albums, I would say definetly in top-10 over albums from the 80's!!!
I've definetly heard MSoTW before, but I can't really remember who it is???
Last weeks MSOTW was none other than Nina Gordon! I know right? Someone should have known that! She's not just a solo singer either she comes from the acclaimed group known as Veruca Salt. OK, I still have no idea who either of these groups/people are, but I am 100% sure this is correct!

Now onto this weeks. I have no idea! Doesn't ring any bells whatsoever. hahahaha....

Toto rocks! I have this one too. Kingdom of Desire rocks! Nice post
Like I said earlier, I only know the greatest hits from Toto, but I totally agree with Jon, this is a pretty heavy album compared to what I'm used to hearing from Toto. I do like it. I like four songs in particular a good bit:

Don't Chain My Heart
How Many Times
Wings Of Time
Kindgdom Of Desire

...and believe it or not, Jon must like 3 of those as well, at least he put asterisks by them. This album has a specific sound that I can't put into words, almost like an exotic sound, kind of like the song Africa.

Oh yeah, no clue on the mystery song, but I get a CSN vibe (I know it's not them).
