Classic Rock Bottom

Disclaimer:  I know everybody that actually reads this column and listens to the posts are not fans of The Gaslight Anthem.  But I think you are making a mistake, so I'm giving you one more chance.  However, if there are zero favorable responses to the post of their newest album, I vow to not put them in NMC in a couple of years when they release another album.

The Gaslight Anthem

(Handwritten)

1. Mulholland Drive

2. Too Much Blood

3. National Anthem

4. Blue Dahlia

5. You Got Lucky

And just to really piss you guys off, I've included the band's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cover of You Got Lucky (you know, since we are discovering him anyway).  Seriously, I like the lyrics, the vocals and the songwriting.  Obviously I'm missing whatever it is that makes this so bland for everybody else, but oh well.  Give 'em one more try for RJ.

Jackyl

(Best In Show)

1. Best In Show

2. Screw Driver

3. Golden Spookytooth

4. Walk My Mile

5. Better Than Chicken

This has totally blown me away.  I've never been a fan of this band.  Not even the chainsaw (which they employ in a cover of Dr. Hook's song Cover Of The Rolling Stone).  I was gonna include the second cover from the album (It's Tricky, which is actually quite cool), but the opening line of Better Than Chicken is just too damn good to not include.  Face it, this is just good ole cock-rock.  The song Walk My Mile has a killer vocal if you ask me, a cross between Dan McCafferty and Brian Johnson.  Welcome back to the late 80's boys.

Jackyl--Thumbs Up

Actually had this in my grimy hands at a Best Buy a couple days ago but put it back. A solid, no-frills ROCK album. Too bad that they'll always be known as "the chainsaw band" since the tracks posted are pretty darn good.

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM - 3 out of 6

There's something about the singer, that I don't like. Maybe he tries to sound like The Boss too much, I don't know, but he ain't very good. The band sounds very much like The Alarm, another bunch that were fans of Springsteen, and a band that I was a fan of in the late 80's. But the songs from TGA are not as strong. I COULD pull out the card "too american for me", but I won't, and it would be weird since The Alarm was irish (I think). It's not bad, it's just another example of not very good records released this year. If I'm lucky, there will be enough good albums for a top 10, at the end of the year, but only if I'm lucky. "National Anthem" is as much a cover of a Springsteen-tune, you can make, even though it isn't a cover. Get your friggen own style!!! '45' or whatever the first single is called is probably the best track on the album. I think there's a Nirvana-cover on the deluxe-version of this album, and it sounds almost exactly like Nirvana's version. I don't get it? Why make a cover, then?? A Bruce Springsteen-cover band that copies Nirvana??? Holy shit, weird stuff!!!

JACKYL - 2 out of 6

I hated that track with the chainsaw from the 90's. This is not very good either. The first track is to slow. If you want to listen to a good band with a singer that's a cross between Brian Johnson, Macaffery and Bon Scott, and has that AC/DC-feel all over it, try and listen to the new "Million Dollar Reload"-album. It's better than this one. This is more Krokus than AC/DC, and I HATE Krokus. There's not one track among these, that stands out. But I'll give 2 stars or whatever it is, because they play rock'n'roll. Not a very good version of it, though.

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM ... Thumbs kind of down

I liked the opener, not a bad tune actually!  Too Much Blood wasn't as good but National Anthem, now that a really strong tune that I really enjoyed!  Blue Dahlia?  eh...  Now for the TP cover - I think if they would up turned up the guitar work and added a tad more distortion this would've worked much better.  Its not bad that they stayed true to the original but cranking up a notch would've been cool!  I didn't get any Springsteen vibe like Niels (but I don't listen to Bruce either so what do I know...) but overall this was 2 of 5 for me so thumbs are slightly down.  I'd say post these guys again, seems to me they are improving!  Next time might be the one!

JACKYL ... Two even thumbs cruising the bar scene with beer goggles on!

My total knowledge of this band is that annoying chainsaw tune!  So listening to the opener doubles my knowledge, and I don't like the way this started but I'm kinda getting the gist of this.  It's bar music, late night 1 hour before last call music.  Hurry and find someone who isn't take yet and get down music!  Trust me, there ain't nothin' wrong with good time bar tunes like this, there's just a place and time for it, and that's about the only place and time I can come up with.

The Gaslight Anthem--Thumbs 3/4 up

I don't see any similarity to BS at all. Maybe The Alarm, but not that much. Definitely a roots rock album, the only thing I could have done without was the TP cover. The rest of the songs were pretty good, why did they need to have a cover? Why did Rjhog need to include a cover when he wanted us to "give em one more try"? Good listen though, but not purchase material.

The Gaslight Anthem - Thumbs Wavering

I liked the first song, Mulholland Drive. I didn't really care for Too Much Blood. National Anthem  & Dahlia were ok. The Petty cover wasn't great, but it was ok. If I heard that cover from a tribute band, I would be ok with it. To sum it up. it was just ok for me. There was nothing terrible, but nothing really jumped out either.

Jackyl - Thumbs Wavering

I wasn't really impressed with Best In Show & I hated Screw Driver. I really, liked Golden Spookytooth! Walked The Mile & Better Than Chicken are good drinking songs. I could see enjoying these, while intoxicated.

Niether one would be purchase material for me, but I would listen if I heard them played. They were both, alright.

I saw the new Jackyl used already. I was a fan of the band in High School, not so much now. The songs were geared towards teenaged Males (yes I was one of those, duh). But they have not aged well. I still like "When Will It Rain" from the first album, I have not listened to Push Comes To Shove, Cut The Crap or Relentless since I bought them years ago. The radio used to play one or two songs from Push and Cut. I liked that Cut The Crap had Brian Johnson, and out of the first three studio albums, I bet I'll like that one the best.

I saw the band live too, with the Scorpions and Tesla. He was funny, and entertaining, but probably drunk. Jackyl seemed more like comic relief before the two good bands. Their Live At The Full Throttle CD was just as bad.

The Gaslight Anthem sound good, like a more mature band. An interesting find! I would never think to get that CD based on the art.
