Classic Rock Bottom

No, it's not what you think. It's much, much worse!

When I seen the ELO posts I was literally just getting done with a Deep Purple-fest.  And as I thought about what I could post that would tie into them, and a few things came to mind quickly, but since Space Truckin' was so fresh in my mind I just had to go there... So that’s the tie in to Jon and RJ's collaboration this week.  Space Travel...

Prepare your speakers for light speed...  No wait!  We're gonna have to go right to ludicrous speed...

PLAYLIST VITALS

Length: 27 minutes 40 seconds
Link: http://www.podsnack.com/playlists/9a0142affe371ecbf4f20358a1069778

TITLE: Rocket Ride
BAND: KISS
ALBUM: Alive II (Side 4)
YEAR: 1977
LENGTH: 4:07
DID YOU KNOW: On the original double album, the songs on side 4 (tracks #6-10 on the second CD) are studio tracks. Although Frehley was originally credited for lead guitar on the studio tracks, the remastered version released in 1997 confirmed what had been speculated by Kiss fans for years - Bob Kulick actually played lead guitar on three tracks ("All American Man", "Rockin' In The U.S.A." and "Larger Than Life"), not Frehley.

The gatefold to this album was the coolest thing I'd ever seen when it came out.  And this song was the best!  I loved everything about it even those who poked fun at it because they couldnt ignore it.  I have a funny feeling that this song really isn’t about a Rocket Ride into Space, just an inkling though...

TITLE: Ride Into The Sun
BAND: Krokus
ALBUM: HooDoo
YEAR: 2010
LENGTH: 5:02
DID YOU KNOW: The band name "Krokus" evolved from the word for a flower common to the region of southern Europe, the crocus. Early in the spring of 1975, band founder Chris von Rohr observed a field of these flowers while traveling by train. He was returning from L'Ecole des Chefs located in France after an aborted career in the culinary arts, and it was around this time the idea for the band was formed. The band members stated that it was the perfect name, since it featured "rok" in the middle.

This album was featured on this site in the New Music Corner, but it has been a long while since then.  I first heard Krokus when 'Long Stick Goes Boom' was played, I can't remember if it was party or radio.  Oh well...  I liked it, and picked up 'One Vice At a Time' shortly after.  They followed that up with 'Headhunter' which is one of the 80's best hard rock albums.  Then they proceeded to seek chart success and whoops!  They fell off the radar.  I would have though this album would have put them back on it, but apparently only the Swiss picked up on it as this album went Platinum over there and no one else got it, except you all of course!

TITLE: Space Station No. 5
BAND: Montrose
ALBUM: Montrose
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 5:15
DID YOU KNOW: It has been said that Warner Bros. Records did not know how to market Montrose, the band or album and already had Deep Purple and the Doobie Brothers to cover the hard rock genre. Montrose eventually went under as a result. But the album has undergone a renaissance since then, eventually going platinum and some critics have gone as far as to label it the "first American heavy metal album".

Count me in the group that missed this band when they came out.  But since I was only 8, I get to blame my brother; he should have picked up on it!  I'll remind him next time I’m in town.  Oh well, that’s all water under the bridge.  I get it now! And it’s one of my favorites...

TITLE: Space Truckin'
BAND: Deep Purple
ALBUM: Machine Head
YEAR: 1972
LENGTH: 4:34
DID YOU KNOW: Within weeks of Fireball's release, the band was already performing songs planned for the next album. One song (which later became "Highway Star") was performed at the first gig of the Fireball tour, having been written on the bus to a show in Portsmouth, in answer to a journalist's question: "How do you go about writing songs?" Three months later, in December 1971, the band traveled to Switzerland to record Machine Head.

Now here’s one my brother didn't miss on.  Machine Head was constantly playing in his room.  I liked it, but didn’t really pick up on Deep Purple until Perfect Strangers came out in 84, then I really got hooked into their back catalog and gained a real appreciation for albums like this.

TITLE: Satellite 15...The Final Frontier
BAND: Iron Maiden
ALBUM: The Final Frontier
YEAR: 2010
LENGTH: 8:40
DID YOU KNOW: At the 53rd Grammy Awards on 13 February 2011, "El Dorado" won the award for Best Metal Performance. It is the band's first win following two previous Grammy nominations ("Fear of the Dark" in 1994 and "The Wicker Man" in 2001).

I've tried to convince Jon that 'Fear of The Dark' is great… at least the Grammy's people agree with me!  Anyway, here's another album we first heard from this site.  And it’s still in heavy rotation for me!  I think Niels even posted this video, which was also awesome!

May the schwartz be with you!

I love ludicrous speed.  Can't get enough of it!

Seriously, I'm so glad that you have the nads to start a playlist dealing with space travel with the one and ONLY Spaceman!  Hey, so Kulick played lead on 3 songs, Ace on this song, so do you know who played lead on the 5th song?

I'm off to listen to this now.

Wasnt it Paul?

Yessir!  By the way, I like the two on the left.

Agreed!!!  Two treasures that are not very well hidden!

Nice playlist and theme Scott.  Every song is cool.  I've really got to listen to that new Iron Maiden.  I absolutely love the song you picked, including that really cool intro.

As a side point to this thread that is tied into what Mike Pell is doing about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the lyrics to The Final Frontier just struck me.  They could easily be adapted to apply to someone that was trapped on the upper floors on that terrible day.  Just listen to them and think about it.  Maybe I'm really out there on this one, but I don't think so.

I can see that ...  Heres the last three verses, I think this is whats resonating with you...

For I have lived my life to the full
I have no regrets
But I wish I could talk to my family
To tell them one last goodbye

The final frontier
The final frontier
The final frontier
The final frontier

If I could survive to live one more time
I wouldn't be changing a thing at all
Done more in my life than some do in ten
I'd go back and do it all over again

For I have lived my life to the full
I have no regrets
But I wish I could talk to my family
And tell them that one last goodbye

The final frontier [x4]

[Guitar solo]

There isn't much time, must say my last rites
Nobody is here to read them to me
Must say my goodbyes, if only a line
A message to tell them in case they might find

For I have lived my life to the full
I have no regrets
But I wish I could talk to my family
To tell them that one last goodbye

I'm going downhill..I only have three of these songs. Actually three of these albums. So I'm getting better. I don't have Krokus. TAKE A GUESS WHICH OTHER ONE I DON'T HAVE? GEEEEETAR!

RJ said he'd swap you a shrinked wrapped KISS Alive II for your shrink wrapped ELO Out of the Blue!

Is it 4 CD's? If not, it's skeet season and need some more discs so I'll break down and take whatever it is. You know, to shoot skeet!
