Classic Rock Bottom

So... unless there are specific requests, these lists seem to go the same way as my musical mood.

Because we've done ballads, melodic rock, and some classics artists, I'm into a much heavier rock and roll mood lately, so thats what we'll do today.  Also, I converted my files to a better quality MP3 (192) - you should hear a difference this week as well.

Ready?

Title: Sin City
Artist: AC/DC
Album: Powerage
Year: 1978

I first heard AC/DC listening to 'Let There Be Rock' at a friends house in Junior High (before they called it Middle School).  I was tempted to post Dog Eat Dog on here, but Powerage might be the most overlooked album of the Bon Scott era, and Sin City is still one my favorite all time AC/DC tunes.  I think they even played this one on the Midnight Special.

Title: Fever Dreams
Artist: Dio
Album: Magica
Year: 2000

Magica was a concept album about the struggle between good and evil.  Not a real strecth for any fans of Dio's work, but the cool thing was that Magica was an album chock full of great tunes that were true to Dio's style.  Coming after his 'Angry Machines' release, Magica was a retrun to the Dio we all know and love.  Fever Dreams has a real catchy guitar and rhythm that grabs you. Craig Goldy debuts in the Dio band on this one, a real underrated player.

Title:  Stranger In a Strange Land
Artist: Iron Maiden
Album: Somewhere In Time
Year: 1986

Melodic Rock from Maiden? I love the rhythm, the guitars, and the thumping bass.  Hey! I just described a ton of Maiden tunes!  hmmm...  This one is different though, a) because its more melodic than most Iron Maiden tracks, b) the synth is new to the band on this release, and c) the textures are perfect.  A real nice surprise to hear.

Title: The Dam At Otter Creek
Artist: Live
Album: Throwing Copper
Year: 1994

Treading into 90's territory for a bunch of classic rockers, this may be a bit on the edge.  I like it though.  It builds slowly to a blazing cresendo, has socially conscious lyrics, plus all the expected rage of the 90's.  OK, maybe thats a bit dramatic, but it has cool guitars, unique vocals and is a great lead off track to a great album.

Title: Loving You Sunday Morning
Artist: Scorpions
Album: Lovedrive
Year: 1979

First you gotta peel your eys off of the album cover and get into the tune here.  Lovedrive was a pivotal album for the Scorps, lineup changes, and a new style centered around the riffs of 3 great guitarists.  This is the lead off track and the riff is the hidden gem for me.  OK, now back to the cover...

Title: Tangerine
Artist: Union
Album: Union
Year: 1998

Alternative or Metal?  You decide, for me its just a great track from John Corabi and Bruce Kulick.  The track is well written and produced and played great, as you would expect Kulick is the star of the track, his guitar work is always top notch, but love the new feel on this one!

Title: Your Love is in Vain
Artist: Vandenburg
Album: Vandenburg
Year: 1982

Before joining Whitesnake and after failing an audition for Thin Lizzy, Vandeburg released at least 2 very good albums from his own band.  This is the lead off track from the debut.  The drivng beat and the guitar shredding are highlights throughout.  But the vocalist is just plain cool.  I was really taken back when I first heard this.  This is one of those albums where I can air-play all the parts of every song. Could use a remastering job, but I won't hold my breath.

Title: Hash Pipe
Artist: Weezer
Album: Green Album
Year: 2001

Weezer is a cool band.  This album was produced by Rik Ocasek so it has some pop music to it, but on Hash Pipe you get to hear this band just have a great time and jam!

Title: Barroom Boogie
Artist: Y&T
Album: Black Tiger
Year: 1982

What a great disc!  This track is just cool because of the story it tells.  For a kid in 1982 to crank this up and jam made it even more cool.  I listen to it now and besides the flashbacks, I'm just glad I don't go through that anymore.

Title: Electric Eye
Artist: Judas Priest
Album: Screamin For Vengeance
Year: 1982

Depending on your opinion, Priest misfired on their previous release, Point of Entry.  But they came screaming back (pun intended) with this opening assault!  In your face, aggressive, crunchy, and loud!  Everything I've always wanted to crank up and shove my ears inbetween.

Until next week...

Allright Scott! The heavy stuff!!

Funny thing about Vandenberg, the one song tha introduced me to them was "Burning Heart", got quite a bit of airplay back in the day, but the one song that always pops in my mind is "Welcome To The Club" since the singer turns the word "club" into this 4+ syllable word. "Welcome to the Clu-u-u-ub", or something along those lines.

Ok, maybe just funny to me.
Know what your saying. His first two releases are really very good ... worth picking up... The third was a bit of a miss for me...
This one looks pretty good. I'll have to listen a little later.
Ahh, this play-list looks really good. This is what I'll hear at work today.
Nice job Scott. The heavy stuff is great. This whole playlist rocked and I really liked the Union tune. I like Bruce Kulick and miss his presence in Kiss. For some reason, I've never gotten around to picking up any Union material....maybe one of these days.
