Classic Rock Bottom

Let's have a Metal discussion.  Undoubtedly, I'm somewhat of a fan.  Here's what I have and know that I like:

Testament - Low and Dark Roots Of The Earth - Both of these are very good IMO.  Trail Of Tears may possible be my favorite metal song.

Armored Saint - La Raza and Symbol Of Salvation - Love the voice of the vocalist.  Both of these are excellent as well.

Metallica - Everything, but I like the two above bands better.

Megadeth - Several releases, including the last three.  I also like Megadeth better than Metallica.

Anthrax - Just Worship Songs and the covers EP from last year.  I believe I'd like to pick up another album from them, what should I start with?

Savatage - I have nothing, but I think I'm gonna start with Gutter Ballet.  Is that a good place to start?

Helloween - Nothing.  Thinking about getting Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Pt. 1.

I'm a melody guy for the most part, and Thrash isn't exactly known for melody.  But there are good melodies here and there.  And I'm not a Cookie Monster kind of guy, so none of that for me (very occasional use I can stand).

So what should I pick up next from these bands above?  C'mon TR and Jon, you guys are metal gurus.

Neither Armored Saint nor Savatage come close in my book to being thrash metal. Metal, yes...thrash metal, no.

But I'm not into it very much, so I'll let the experts take over. But, even though I dont like thrash very much, I do have a ton of Megadeth, and 4 Metallica releases.

For me, the best Savatage is "Hall Of The Mountain King", and "Handful Of Rain". Both live releases are good as well. One made in Japan with the Zachary Stevens/Chris Cafferey lineup, and one that is a tribute to Criss Oliva (R.I.P), that has both the Oliva brothers on it. But "Gutter" is a good one, too, in my opinion.

Thanks G.

So, another question added by Gordon...should Armored Saint or Savatage be considered Thrash Metal or something else?

By the way, Testament just blew my ears off with Low.

I adjusted the title from Thrash Metal Discussion to Metal Discussion...

Sorry if I got "picky"! But the Anthrax, Slayer, Testament, Overkill....that is what I think of in terms of thrash. Along with Megadeth and Metallica, of course!

Helloween isn't thrash, it's power metal. Substitute Death Angel, and then we'll talk.

Testament you can add The Ritual & The Formation Of Damnation.

Armored Saint you can add Symbol Of Salvation. Not thrash metal.

Anthrax you can add Persistence Of Time, We've Come For You All & Sound Of White Noise

Savatage is a personal taste to start for me, and that would be Dead Winter Dead and Poets & Madmen. The early Savatage ain't what you would expect if you listen to the latter part of their catalogue though. Not  thrash either.

Since you mentioned Helloween (even though they're not thrash) I still dig Chameleon, Rabbit Don't Come Easy and Gambling With The Devil

Testament's "Practice What You Preach" is pretty good and The Formation of Damnation is another must get.

Armored Saint...you have to get their album "Raising Fear".

Anthrax - "We've Come For You All" and "State of Euphoria".

Helloween - Both Keeper CDs, and then pretty much any album other than "Chameleon" and "Rabbit Don't Come Easy".

By the way, Armored Saint is NOT thrash. They are straight up heavy metal.

Savatage was "thrashy" in the beginning, but they are more symphonic metal beginning with Hall of the Mountain King.

And you should get every single album Savatage has ever released so you can see the progression of the band from start to finish.

Savatage discography:

The Dungeons are Calling (EP)

Sirens

Power of the Night

Fight for the Rock

Hall of the Mountain King

Gutter Ballet

Streets: A Rock Opera

Edge of Thorns

Handful of Rain

Dead Winter Dead

The Wake of Magellan

Poets and Madmen

Gordon originally pointed it out, which is why I changed the title of the thread to just Metal Discussion.

Good thing you removed THRASH from the discussion, or I would've missed this totally.  I know ZERO, NADA, about Thrash and have no desire to learn ...

here's where My Metal Heart lies....

  • I think Accepts Metal Heart is the most brilliant metal album.  I love that album...  Screaming for a Lovebite?  Awesome!  Really Metal or not, its always been that to me...
  • ACDC was introduced to me as a Metal band.  This was in 1977, when Let There Be Rock was their newest album.  The very first song I ever heard of ACDC was "Dog Eat Dog" off of that album.  It was a moment in time that shaped my "Metal" thoughts...
  • I could hear Black Sabbath playing in my brothers room often, but I never connected with the band until Heaven and Hell came out.
  • ...  To that end , Dio's Holy Diver was also game changer for me.  Brilliant
  • and finally...  I don't get Ozzy, his solo stuff isn't that good, though I will admit to enjoying a recent AOTW RJ posted, but his first two albums don't really work for me
  • I have never connected Deep Purple to the Heavy Metal genre.
  • Iron Maiden was another wake up call.  The opening to the title track freaked me out the first time I heard it.  As much as my friends played it (and that was a lot) I liked it but didn't really dive into them until Somewhere In Time (probably their most non-metal album)
  • Judas Priest's Hell Bent For Leather was pure metal to me (with the possible exception of Before The Dawn but lets not split hairs) - still think of that album as such.  Their later releases?  Not so much....
  • Megadeth is a newer love of mine as well.  I always liked what I heard and friends played them frequently as well, but I didn't get them until RJ posted Countdown to Extinction and then I dug deep ...  I have enjoyed Mustaine's work ever since
  • I don't like Metallica, sorry can't get into them.
  • Fastway was another band I've always consider Metal.  Love their debut!!

As far as some of the bands mentioned here, I've never been exposed to them except through this site, and not much of it has worked for me.

My two cents...

AC/DC would be Hard Rock to me.  Can everybody else chime in on this?

I would agree 100%, what I was trying to say was, at that moment in time, they were a metal band.

I get where you're coming from.

More hard rock then metal. But they're going to be grouped in the HM catagory, kind of like Van Halen.
