Classic Rock Bottom

Let's have a Metal discussion.  Undoubtedly, I'm somewhat of a fan.  Here's what I have and know that I like:

Testament - Low and Dark Roots Of The Earth - Both of these are very good IMO.  Trail Of Tears may possible be my favorite metal song.

Armored Saint - La Raza and Symbol Of Salvation - Love the voice of the vocalist.  Both of these are excellent as well.

Metallica - Everything, but I like the two above bands better.

Megadeth - Several releases, including the last three.  I also like Megadeth better than Metallica.

Anthrax - Just Worship Songs and the covers EP from last year.  I believe I'd like to pick up another album from them, what should I start with?

Savatage - I have nothing, but I think I'm gonna start with Gutter Ballet.  Is that a good place to start?

Helloween - Nothing.  Thinking about getting Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Pt. 1.

I'm a melody guy for the most part, and Thrash isn't exactly known for melody.  But there are good melodies here and there.  And I'm not a Cookie Monster kind of guy, so none of that for me (very occasional use I can stand).

So what should I pick up next from these bands above?  C'mon TR and Jon, you guys are metal gurus.

But they're the Metal Gods. So say they.

".....but his (Ozzy) first two albums don't really work for me"??!!!!!!!

What seems to be the problem? Randy Rhoads????

Two of the greatest Metal-releases ever!!

For me, Metal was NWOBHM and therefore, around 1984, Metal got less and less interesting.

When I think Metal, it's Priest, Maiden, Saxon, Samson, Accept, Riot, Raven and others, I've forgotten right now.

In 1983-84, I noticed two new bands, Metallica and Motley Crue, and it meant the beginning of the end of good Metal-music. I never liked neither, with the exeption of Metallica from '85-'88, but I was never a fan, and nowadays, I think they stink just as much as U2.

Got no issues with Ozzy or his band, just don't care for his solo work much.  In fact I own Blizzard and Diary on vinyl, bought them when they were first released.  They sit in my collection in practically mint condition to this day.

I love metal and hard rock. I agree with Gordon that neither Armored Saint nor Savatage are thrash bands. Savatage I would classify as more power metal or symphonic than thrash.  My two favorite thrash bands are Overkill and Megadeth.

You can't go wrong with either album Gordon mentioned by Savatage. I will also throw in "Gutter Ballet" and "Streets: A Rock Opera." Great stuff.

"Among the Living" is probably my favorite Anthrax album.

I pretty much like everything Helloween has ever done. "Walls of Jericho" is a very heavy album though, so you could argue that one is sort of thrash metal but most of their others are not. Both Keeper albums are essential.

I'm glad I finally found something to spark some discussion.

To me, I will always think of Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden as metal. Not every single release, of course, but just how I think of them. Same thing with Deep Purple. The early and mid-70's period was when I first got into Purple, and I'll always THINK of them as metal.

But, of course, their history has now gone on for so long, they were n't really metal much after Blackmore left. NOW I'd just call them hard rock...but being impressed by their heaviness at 11 or 12 years old is where my "mental picture" of Deep Purple will always be.

Never thought of Led Zeppelin as metal, though, and I understand the band hated being termed a metal band.
