VOTW - KATATONIA

I'm not really a fan of this swedish band. I did buy an album 4 years ago (and had it in NMC), but it wasn't an album, that I listened to for that long. Now they've released a new album, and after only listening once, I'm not sure what to think of it. But since I was able to listen to the whole album (70 min. or so, meaning RJhog should probably stay away from it), adn will be listening again, it's not exactly crap imo. The style is kind of "New Metal/Depressive Metal" or whatever, and I think they sound a bit like a cross between the english 90's band Bush (which I kind of hated) and A Perfect Circle (which I kinda liked in the start of the 00's). The new album seems to be more "proggy" than what I remembered them to be, but I have a feeling, neither of you will like this, but here we go:Katatonia is a Swedish metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band started as a studio-only project for the duo, as an outlet for the band's love of death metal. Increasing popularity lead them to add more band members for live performances, though outside of the band's founders, the lineup was constantly changing, revolving door of musicians throughout the 1990s, notably including Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth for a period. After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), problems with Renkse's vocal chords coupled with new musical influences lead the band away from the screamed vocals of death metal to a more traditional, melodic form of heavy metal music. The band released two more albums, Discouraged Ones (1998) and Tonight's Decision (1999), before settling into a stable quintet lineup for all of 2000's. The band released four more albums with said lineup - Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001), Viva Emptiness (2003), The Great Cold Distance (2006), and Night Is the New Day (2009), with the band slowly moving away from their metal sound while adding more progressive rock sounds to their work over time. While lineup changes started up again into the 2010's, Renkse and Nyström persisted, and the band continued to release music, including Dead End Kings (2012) and their most recent, their tenth studio album, The Fall of Hearts, released on May 20, 2016.

JULY (2006)

The Great Cold Distance is Katatonia's seventh full-length album. The album was recorded and mixed at Fascination Street Studios, Örebro. It is placed at number 8 on PopMatters' list of the Top Metal Albums of 2006.The album was re-released on March 12, 2007 with two bonus tracks with the entire album in 5.1 surround sound. There is also a special Swedish edition of the album, which came in a limited edition box with an exclusive Katatonia poster, set of Katatonia postcards and an enhanced video of "My Twin". Music videos were also released for singles "Delibration" and "July". The video stops rather suddently, sorry 'bout that.

MY TWIN (2006)

"My Twin" is a single by Swedish metal band Katatonia in 2006. It was the first single off the band's seventh studio album The Great Cold Distance. The single's music video was directed by Charlie Granberg. The single charted at no. 9 on the Finnish music charts.

DAY AND THEN THE SHADE (2009)

Night Is the New Day is Katatonia's eighth full-length album. It was released 2 November 2009, in Europe and 10 November 2009, in North America through Peaceville Records. Thirteen tracks were recorded, eleven of which made it onto the record. The band describes the material as "Our most varied, diverse and possibly strongest shit all together on one and the same album". "Idle Blood" had the working title "Kozelek", named after Mark Kozelek, a member of Red House Painters, which is one Katatonia's influences. This is the last Katatonia release with the Norrman brothers.

LETHEAN (2012)

Dead End Kings is Katatonia's ninth full-length album. It was released on August 27, 2012, in Europe and August 28 in the U.S. through Peaceville Records. This is the first album to feature Per Ericksson and Niklas Sandin in the lineup, though Per Ericksson would leave in 2014. This is also the final album to feature longtime drummer Daniel Liljekvist as a member of the band.

OLD HEART FALLS (Lyrics Video) 2016

The Fall of Hearts is the tenth studio album by Swedish metal band Katatonia. It was released on May 20, 2016. The album, mostly written and produced by founding members Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström, was the first to also feature new members Daniel Moilanen and Roger Öjersson. The album moved in a more progressive rock direction than prior albums, and was generally well received by critics, especiall in PROG Magazine, and that's why I got interested in the band once more.

I recall the NMC post as I liked the Marillion post, but heres my comment about Katatonia..

Nu-Metal, eh.. Same as it ever was (Hey I knew that Talking Heads lyric would be useful one day!)

hahaha, I suspect not much has changed...

JULY ... Well, much like youre not a fan of a lot of American AOR, this Euro-Metal stuff does nothing for me as well.

MY TWIN ... Did the song change?

DAY AND THEN THE SHADE ... Now were onto something. Everything works on this except for the rhythms during the chorus as the build up feels just like everything we've already heard. But, the songs beat and feel is really quite good, I actually really dig this one.

I'll have to finish this up a little later...
