We have come to the End of our Listen to the Monterey Pop Festival At 54.
It was the first huge, outdoor concert with a new, innovative sound system.
Along with Janis Joplin and Otis Redding, the 3rd act that blew an unsuspecting audience away was The Jimi Hendrix Experience, with their 1st major concert appearance in America.
Trying to top The Who, Hendrix performed a literally fiery version of Wild Thing- and it has always brought a smile to my face when about halfway through, he riffs Frank Sinatra’s Strangers In The Night.
Listen for it.
Part of the Festival organizers were the Mamas & Papas, and they were the act that closed it all out on that concluding Sunday night.
That song I opened this Series with, “Monterey” by Eric Burdon & The Animals, contains one of my favorite lines in all of Rock & Roll- If you wanna find Truth in Life, don’t pass MUSIC by.
Amen to that!
