Classic Rock Bottom

Welcome to Week 2, I figure we are about in the Bottom of the Third Inning or Top of the Fourth now.
Continuing with this Salute To Baseball, the song most commonly connected with the Sport is Take Me Out To The Ballgame.
I will!
But there is an interesting history behind that song.
For instance, the guy who wrote it had never seen a Major League Baseball game- and didn't for another 33 years!
It's Folk, Rock & Comedy this time Out...or am I Safe, lol?
With nostalgia about choosing up sides for a game, the tenuous careers of prospects, and the dirtiest team in Baseball (if not for how they played the Game, certainly laundry-wise).
Join me, it's fun!

RJ,
That Who's On First bit is classic, great if you go a couple of years without hearing it.
Whoever wrote it remains anonymous!
And the Golden Pell to Tom Paxton, for My Favorite Spring!
It is a great story, and that was the song I couldn't get out of my head after doing the show.
Stayed with me for days, has a catchy hook, lol!
And you know Tom knows his Baseball with lines like, "My fastball was nothing but smoke, my curveball snapped and broke".
I played Glory Days by Springsteen fairly recently, too recently, and I don't like to repeat songs if I can help it.
And I remember you telling me about your friend, with the "..."he could throw that speedball by you, make you look like a fool boy".
That's another thing like "have a catch", we NEVER said speedball in NYC (where VERY many big league ballplayers come from, people don't realize how many), it was a fastball!
That song by Kenny Rogers called The Greatest was good.
Never knew about it, probably would have played it.
Kept waiting for the kid to hit the ball...he looked like my father trying to do so.
Then I realized he was a pitcher...and hit like one, LOL!
Thanks for the listen and writing,
Mike

Quite a few interesting songs here.  Pretty much liked the whole show.

You are right about the Who's On First bit, it doesn't get old, and those two really did perfect it.  There performance of it is unbelievable.

As far as a Golden Pell, I'm going with your staple Tom Paxton.  My Favorite Spring is just a terrific song.  The lyrical story it tells is great.

Just thought of two other songs.  Can't remember if you played Glory Days by Springsteen or not.  It always makes me think of a good buddy from about 6th-9th grade that really fits the description..."he could throw that speed ball by you, make you look like a fool boy".

And one from not so long ago, a comeback of sorts for Kenny Rogers called The Greatest, from the late 90's:

Uhhh..hello?

Baltimore vs. KC for the ALC? Where the hell you been?

Scott,
Homer and Jethro sounds better...  pickin' and grinnin'. don't you think, lol!
If you were never the right fielder or catcher, you were an all right ballplayer then.
I was in so many beer leagues, some for serious drinkers.
We'd have BARRELS filled with beer- I remember being on the field playing third with the beer can behind me.
It was an added incentive to get to the ball so it wouldn't knock over my beer, lol!
There was a time I loved the big leagues, now I just watch casually.
And I lost it for Cracker Jacks!
The Golden Pell to Abbott and Costello!
And another Golden Pell for Harry Caray, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing,
Mike

Jon,
You dunno? That's a first, lol!
Now that Baltimore is out, maybe I'll root for the Nationals.
That "Who's On First" routine is a classic, and it's interesting they didn't originate it- they certainly made it their own.
Whoever wrote the bit remains anonymous.
Since I am in a disagreeing mood, I will say that each song in here sounded entirely different both musically and lyrically.
All you need is ears!
As for Harry Caray, I liked him PRECISELY because he always sounded drunk...and maybe was, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing,
Mike

Ah...  good ol' Steve and Jethro!  That's some fine pickin' and I'm sure some grinnin' as well.

I don't know much about baseball, never really got into it, but I can say I was never the right fielder.  But, we did a play it a lot as kids, and I made it all the way up to beer league play before marriage and children made that all just a memory that still kind of fuzzy.  Just never translated into love for the big leagues although I do love a box Cracker Jacks still.

Abbot and Costello get the G-Pell

Did someone mention Harry Caray?

Ehhhhhh, I dunno.

I'm happy that either KC or Baltimore are guaranteed to go to the WS. Preferably KC, but I'm more than happy with Baltimore. If LA and Washington don't make it, I'll be happy. If Sl doesn't make it, I'll be happy. Guess that means I wouldn't mind seeing SF in the WS, but they will need to lost for me to be really happy.

The "Who's On First" routine got old for me, but listening to it here it sounded new. Probably because I haven't listened to it in years.

Now for what I dunno.....I wasn't too keen on the show. Kinda sounded like the same songs, acoustic geetar™, etc., etc. At least you didn't mention anything about Harry Carey, one of the worst baseball announcers ever. I always thought he would fall out of the booth during the 7th inning stretch considering how drunk he was by then. He was probably drink before the game even started.

Well, there's always the next show?
