ROCKOLLECTIONS: SALUTE TO RADIO- IT'S DEPENDABLE

I had computer problems last week at the worst possible time- for of all the Themes for Series I have picked over the 15 years, Radio is the one I am most passionate about.
I wrote, "if only computers were as dependable as Radio"- something I have felt for a long time.
Thus an idea was born...and I will use Music to state my case!
You can have a Radio for over 50 years, and when you turn it on it does what it is supposed to do- what you EXPECT it to do!
The same can NOT be said about computers.
I will point out, and it is non-negotiable, that during Blackouts, Severe Storms and other problematic events, televisions, computers, cell phones, etc. all go out and are useless.
And we are forced to turn to to that Old Standby...the Portable Transistor Radio!
Even during times of personal sadness or loss, Radio can be a comfort.
And don't think me hypocritical for saying one thing, then using the computer to get my show out.
That's just today's world and I have to go along with it.
So join me for this Chapter, as I Celebrate the Dependability Of Radio.
It's a Friend that asks for nothing in return.

RJ, I could have sworn I responded to that Kiss video- I recorded it.

I said I liked it, it was a pretty straightforward interpretation- but maybe slightly slower, what do you think?

And when I saw that album cover I thought I had it.

Turns out it was an album of covers BY the Ramones I have, lol!

Thanks for the gift,

Mike

Oh man RJ, that song by the Oak Ridge Boys is GREAT!

I'll be doing the show on Sunday, and it wouldn't surprise me if it is in there!
I thank you sir!

RJ,
You AGREE with Jon?
My heart be still, lol!
I've heard Stevens' shows aren't that great.
You saw Wayne Newton and I've always heard he is great live.
Right off, no delay, the Golden Pell goes to that crazed genius Harry Nilsson!
Man I love Harry, he did some brilliant stuff and some off-the-wall, but always entertaining.
So I agree, although Tommy West gets it from me.
Listened to Kiss do the Ramones- pretty straightforward version, maybe slightly slower, you think?
Looking at the cover, I thought I had that album.
Turns out what I was thinking of was one BY the Ramones, and them doing covers of others, lol!
Definite Beatles vibe by ELO.
And oh, I see, I guess Old Radio by Tommy West would be the 2nd choice for the Golden Pell.
Nice picks!
I'll look around for that The Oakridge Boys one, doubt I have it though.
Maybe I can find it somewhere.
Thanks for the Kiss (HUH?) and the The Oakridge tip, and listening & writing, lol,
Mike

Jon,
Couldn't have been that mellow with the Ramones in it, lol!
And the Tommy West kinda rocked, thought the Nanci Griffith one did even more!
Ray Stevens doesn't bother me, some of his songs are funny, but I never had to answer phones from his fans.
Truth is I like his version of that song, and I had previously played it on the show by John Hartford and another time by Roy Acuff.
It was Ray's turn, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing, glad you liked the songs,
Mike

The Oak Ridge Boys song is My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me.  It's not available on Youtube, so if I remember, I'll try to post it for you tonight.

Believe it or not, I pretty well agree with Jon.  However, I'm okay with Ray.  I saw him live in '93 in Branson, Mo.  His live show was lacking bite, plus it was very short.  However, I saw Wayne Newton and Glen Campbell on the same trip (different shows) and they were both fantastic.

I'm gonna go ahead and hand out the Golden Pell to Harry Nilsson.  That's a good little song.

Did you know that Kiss covered Do You Remember R&R Radio for a Ramones tribute?  Maybe I can find that on Youtube and post it for you.  I have one other song by The Oakridge Boys that would have fit nicely today that I'm gonna try to find as well.  If so, they will magically appear shortly for your consumption.

Oh, and I like the ELO tune.  I get that strong Beatles vibe/influence with that song.  And I also liked the song Old Radio by Tommy West.

Nice show, Mike. Pretty mellow, but nice songs throughout. The only artist that bugs me is Ray Stevens, probably because I took calls for a video cassette of his greatest hits year ago and most people that called were, well, kind of stupid. Just never really got his humor, not even with the Streak song.
