ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE KENTUCKY DERBY PT.1

mp_kyderby1.jpg
Well it only took many years, but I finally realized in time to do something about it!
A show that has been bouncing around in my head for all those years, dedicated to the Kentucky Derby.
Because the only 2 vices I have avoided in my life are gambling and drugs, I never bet the ponies or the Derby, so it always sort of sneaked up on me.
But this year…voila…I am aware, lol!
So there will be much horsing around, and even imbibing in that famous traditional beverage.
There are some wonderful listeners I am blessed to have, who think along with me in these free-form-radio ventures.
And I am sure they figure there is a Rolling Stones song I HAVE to play.
They are correct of course, but I am going to throw them and everybody else a surprising curveball with that one, lol!
Something you may never have known about regarding that classic song.
Plus I have the chance to play within a Theme a song I have always loved, exquisite in its open to interpretation symbolism, that goes far beyond merely catching a horse.
Ah, there’s a lot here if you like Horses.
And we are only at the halfway marker- with a photo finish still to come.
You are invited to saddle up and join me.

Mike,
Yes you did, and you misspelled "misspell", LOL!
I can be just as quirky about wanting to edit things on the blog myself.
A glaring error and nothing I can do about it...ARGHHHH, lol!
Back for another show, so that makes you an Old Salt- I like that "One Listen Wonder" you came up with though!
Susan Boyle did a version of Wild Horses?
Man, I never watch those talent shows...that may be why, lol!
I know it has been done quite a few times by artists, but I wanted to play that Flying Burrito Brothers one because of the history of it being out before the Stones released their version.
I am close to the vest, but your horse song thinking is excellent, lol!
I think you'll like Part Two even better than this one.
Thanks for listening and writing my friend, it makes it all worthwhile,
Mike

Hey Mike, I made it back for another show! So, now I can shake the tags "First Time Listener" "One Listen Wonder"! Again, Great show! The Dan Fogelburg tune was nice, but the highlights for me was "The Flying Burrito Brothers" & of course "The Byrds".  You can never go wrong, throwing in a Byrds tune!

I always like hearing "Wild Horses"! I like the Stones version, I even liked hearing Susan Boyle's version, that she performed on that talent show with Sharon Osbourne. I think the "The Sundays" even released a version. I remember it being ok. I had never heard "The Flying Burritos" version until now, but I liked it@ I thought they did I nice job with it, it evoked feeling & I think that's what that songs designed to do.

I'm with RJ, horse songs, you think Wildfire, but I was also thinking "Horse With No Name" by America. Aprecciate it Mike,  I'll tune into part 2.

Jon,
You may be right, it's quite a risk, lol!
Seriously though, if I played what you always expected it would be contrary to my goal.
And that is to surprise people with the UNEXPECTED!
Give them that "OH WOW" moment when I am lucky enough to do so!
That's always what I try to do, and I can never resist that either, lol!
Thanks, you are my new understudy replacement, but don't be predictable, lol,
Mike

Yeah...I do one and you'll have no more listeners!

Of course you picks are good!

P.S. But if you played what I expected, it would be better.

Damn, couldn't resist!

Jon,
You tactful cad, lol!
Any more of your kind of spicey, and it's Jon's Rockollections, lol!
Thanks for the P.S and the P.P.S.
My picks are good, right?...and hey maybe you can fill in for me sometime, lol,
Mike

RJ,
That's lousy when work goes to hell like that.
But I guessed the Golden Pell!
I wondered if I stayed too long with the bugle, but right into the Beatles and I didn't care, lol!
That Fogleberg tune is a beauty, and the Flying Burrito Bros. version of Wild Horses is actually more Country than the Stones- might be a little longer too.
But it came first!
That song by the Byrds, called Chestnut Mare, is a metaphor for anything you are searching for, and sometimes when you find it, it is very very hard to hold onto.
It could be sex...and keeping that partner.
But it is so open to interpretation maybe no two people hear the same thing.
One of the reasons I've always loved it.
I was listening to the playback before I officially posted the episode, and that was the one I picked you would like most.
The meeting of the minds, lol!
Speaking of which...Wildfire...mmmmm!!!
Thanks for the listen and always interesting comments, and I think you'll like Part Two,
Mike

I'm trying a new tact. Trying to be the angry guy that never gets to hear what he wants to hear even though it's your show, your picks, etc. "Sure, it was a great show but man did it suck because he didn't play (insert song/artist here)." All to make things spicey!!!!

P.S. Of course I like your shows, there's been a lot of great tunes I would never have bothered to listen to before.

P.P.S. Of course, the show would be better if you played everything I think you should be playing.

Before I read RJ, I predict the Golden Pell for the Byrds, lol!

I listened to this part at work today, but right after I finished, work went straight to hell.  So I'm just now commenting from the best of my memory.

I thought the bugle at the beginning was perfect.  And that's the most I've ever heard of that.  I did like the Fogleberg tune and the Flying Burrito Bros. version of Wild Horses.  I almost picked it for the Golden Pell, but alas, I'm going with...

the song by The Byrds.  Don't remember the title, but I really loved the acoustic guitar work in it.  And the lyrics.  Was that song a metaphor for something else, you know......sex?

The line "I'm going to catch that horse if I can, and when I do I'm gonna give her my brand".  I'm tellin' you, go back and listen to it.  It was full of those things.

I'm expecting to hear Wildfire in the next show.  That's always the first song I think of that has to do with horses.

Enjoyed it Mike.  I should be able to get to part 2 tomorrow.
