Classic Rock Bottom

I'll open this chapter for Mothers with two interpretations of the same song.
As I was discussing recently with my friend RJ, there are songs that are covered by artists and Pop-musiced-up to the point where the meaning intended by the writer is lost.
That seems to be case with the first, at least to me- then I'll play the proper message version by the composer, Randy Newman.
I started talking about my own Mom, how she is no longer with us, and how much I miss her.
I had absolutely no idea what I was going to play going into this half, and that sentimental mood brought on by thoughts of my very cool Mom caused me to take a risk.
The risk being that today's radio seemingly has no place for mellow songs- gotta keep those meters in the studio hopping!
But I'll play them when it suits me and it fits.
Adding to the risk is the high probability you have never heard the songs in the set, so I will really be pushing it, lol!
But that set will be the centerpiece of the episode- what they have in common, besides being beautiful music, is the fact they are Songs By ACTUAL Mothers To Their ACTUAL Children!
What a marvelous gift to be able to do such a thing.
Due to the sheer number of songs about Mothers, and far more importantly, the fact that Mothers deserve to be Saluted for more than just ONE day, I will continue with additional music about them next week...and maybe beyond.
I wish all Mothers the Happiest Mothers Day!
If your Mom is deceased, a truly loving remembrance.
If Mom is still in your life, cherish her and let her know how much you love her.
Please don’t wait until it is chiseled on a tombstone- let her know NOW!!!
She will be so thrilled and grateful to hear it, and you will feel terrific after saying it!

Scott,
I don't know if he is influencing me, but I will be listening to Kiss- that's a start, lol!
Three Dog Night having the drummers kit transparent IS cool, never noticed that.
That would stick in your mind- they being the first band you saw on stage that looked like a rock and roll band.
Happy you liked the song choices for Mothers- I really had no idea what I was gonna do after the first half.
You might be familiar with the Judy Collins & Carole King ones.

It was a nice interlude and a proper way to get your messgae across without having to say much anything else!

Yeah...that's the ticket...that's what I was doing, lol!
In truth and in some way, I think that was what I wanted to say.
The idea of the Mothers actually singing to their own children really appealed to me.
Next week, we'll rock more.
Thanks for listening, writing, and the "great show", plus to you too a Happy Mothers Day to all of them in your life,
Mike

Kinda scary that RJ is influencing you now,  should we expect a series on KISS soon?  hahahahaha...  I kid.

I was raised on Three Dog Night so my choice is obvious.  I remember the drummers kit was transparent and I always thought that was cool.  But what really stuck in my mind was they were the first band I seen on stage that looked like a rock and roll band.  Great presence!

Nice choices for the songs by Mothers, I wont pretend to say I know much about all them but they sound familiar.  It was a nice interlude and a proper way to get your messgae across without having to say much anything else!

Great show Mike!

Hey, there's only ONE RJ, and now parts of the world know of him, lol!
Everybody's got one, but in Three Dog Night's version it's a guy- he even mentions his girlfriend being with him.
Randy Newman wrote it as a frightened girl at a party, horrified at what she is seeing and regretting she came despite her Mother's warning- a helluva lot more menace in his version.
I like them both, but prefer Randy's for the true message.
Both Judy Collins AND the next one by Joan Baez were from vinyl, and the Baez one was the more scratchy, particularly at the beginning which for some reason is always the case- but that was the only copy I had.
Hope you can find the room to set up a turntable, it can be very refreshing and relaxing to go back to the old records.
No kidding, that was another Beatles track that's new to you?
Man I am singlehandedly playing their catalogue for you, lol!
It's hard to find Beatles' songs NOT to like!
Glad you didn't think the show was too mellow and enjoyed it.
I was concerned, but I went with what I felt like playing and once done, I couldn't change it.
I'll continue next week with more Moms, good & bad.
Thanks as always, and a Happy Mothers Day to all of them in your life,
Mike

Hey dude, thanks for mentioning me.  Yes me.  I'm absolutely positive that's the first time I've ever been mentioned on the radio.

Mama Told Me Not To Come is a really cool song.  I've always liked Three Dog Night's version, but then again, I've never heard Randy Newman's version until today.  And although I'm sure you like the latter best, I have to lean to the former.  Of course it's just opinion, you know everybody's got one.

I liked the middle segement of songs written by mothers for their children.   I liked Judy Collins' song best, and I think it's the one you could really tell was on vinyl, or was that the next one?  I miss vinyl.  I just don't have the room at home to set up and play it.  Maybe one day.

Nice job on the Beatles pick.  Yet another Beatles track that's new to me.  Their catalogue is not all that expansive compared to some bands, so you'd think I had heard 'em all at least once.  I even own their catalogue.  But I did like that song.

That show wasn't so far out there after all.  I enjoyed it.
