Classic Rock Bottom

This 4-part series may seem surprising- acoustic, a folk act, and from the 50’s & early 60’s!
But the Kingston Trio made their mark, I am a folkie and I get to pick, lol!
I will be taking an extensive look at the Trio, and delving deeply.
If I didn’t think you would enjoy it, I wouldn’t bother putting it up here.
And there is some interesting history connected to them.
Did you know that at the very first Grammys, they won one for Best Country & Western Song- there was no Folk category!
Wonder what Johnny Cash was doing that year?
While immensely popular with the public, they were villified by the folk purists because they dared to sing new songs, not just 200 year old ones!
At one point, they had 4 of the Top 10 albums on the charts.
So join me, as I play a certain song that was on our Summer Cruise, but this time with the old, calypso wording.
An African song, with a translation at the beginning, that became a huge hit by another group after they rocked it up..
And a Woody Guthrie song that sounds so different to hear by somebody other than the Weavers.
We’re just getting started!

Here's the first link of what will be one more than a trio, at WLSO.FM:

Jon,
Sick, sick, SICK, LOL!
They had the Top 100 albums back then.
But it is fun to look at those lists.
Rock & Roll was still the bastard child, and the lists were populated with Sinatra, Doris Day, Perry Como and all the usual suspects, plus many Musical Soundtracks.
Fascinating, but accurate- the teenagers weren't buying albums, they were into singles.
Frankly, they probably didn't have the money, lol!

Just curious, what was the full list of top ten albums when the Kingston Trio had the 4 in the top 10?

Maybe there were only 10 albums out at that time?

And, of course, that's my sick, sick attempt at humor.

Drives me crazy, but not in a shoot 'em up kind of way.

Hahahahahaha...thank God!

You are Mr. Obvious!

No helmets.  However, you brought up a good point.  The baseball cap.  That's what I call it, a cap.  My wife says it's a baseball hat.  Drives me crazy, but not in a shoot 'em up kind of way.

I don't wear a hat, just a baseball cap if I am playing in a league game.

Do helmets count for hockey, lol?

Do you WEAR a hat, lol?

I'll certainly tip my hat to 'em.

I am tending to agree with you guys now.
And I should point out that when I did that show Michael Jackson was ALIVE!
So the rush of sales after his death isn't a factor.
Whatever I was reading from clearly implied the record was broken or tied, but if it had said who did it, I think I would have said who did it, lol!
I wouldn't think the U.K. counts, it's the U.S. charts that are the ones that matter.
And RJ,

The Kingston Trio is the only artist to have four albums simultaneously in the Top Ten, which occurred for five consecutive weeks in November and December 1959

That's quite a feat.
Maybe their music isn't too old, has some substance to it, and the group is just right for you, LOL!
Just kidding, you are open-minded and give all a listen!
Thanks guys, it sure is a curious situation.
If that has never been beaten, The Kingston Trio are unmatched in an incredible accomplishment.

If you go to Wikipedia and search "billboard album chart", this is stated:

The Kingston Trio is the only artist to have four albums simultaneously in the Top Ten, which occurred for five consecutive weeks in November and December 1959

So I'm saying that particular feet has never been matched, even by MJ.

This is a tough search and the only thing I found was what Rjhog posted.

But I think there is something to Michael Jackson. I know that after his death his albums sold a bunch and he might have had 5 top ten albums on the Catalog Chart, but I can't find anything to back that up, unless I'm missing it.

I did find this in Wikipedia:

In the second week following his death, Jackson had 13 songs in the UK Top 40, and 5 albums in the Top 10, including the top-selling album.

Since that's U.K., I don't think it counts. I can't find anything on his posthumous sales (yet).

So...it seems that The Kingston Trio have never been beaten!
