Classic Rock Bottom

In case anyone is interested, the Decibel Geek podcast is quite interesting.  Below is the latest show, part 4 in a series about how bad radio today stinks.  This particular show plays cuts from Motorhead, Kiss, Motley Crue, LA Guns, Van Halen, Tenacious D (NSFW) and Pantera, along with a few others.

They aslo have shows dedicated to particular subjects.  Last week I listened to one about the new Van Halen album, which was recorded before the album was released.  Anyway, below is from the website but if you have an iPod you can find it on iTunes and download current shows as well as older shows.

Episode 20 - Radio Sucks Radio Show 4

You just keep coming back to get your ears blasted and we thank you! Last week's Eric Carr episode really took off and we want to welcome all the new listeners. For the uninitiated, we try to mix things up throughout the month. While we love doing the interviews and have plenty more for the future, we also like to showcase some music as we're doing today.
Corporate radio sucks. That statement is about as simple as saying that the sky is blue or Nickelback is the antithesis to good music. With that said, Aaron Camaro & Chris Czynszak set out each month to play you some deep cuts from rock and metal history that the payola-induced corporate fat cats shudder away from. This is the Radio Sucks Radio Show part 4!
We've got a full slab of great music for you today. We start things off with a Motorhead track from the 'Iron Fist' album followed by a KISS track off 1974's Hotter than Hell.
Our first break is comprised of a flashback commercial featuring an unlikely pairing between two acts; especially when you consider who was opening up for whom.
We segue into some 'Shout at the Devil' era Motley Crue as we discuss the band's recent residency in Las Vegas. We make sure to update everyone on Vinnie Vincent's recent musical output. It's buggin'! After that, we give you a track from the 31st lineup of L.A. Guns, the last one to feature Phil Lewis and Tracii Guns before they decided that two was better than one.
With this week's release of 'A Different Kind of Truth,' Van Halen is front and center on the world's radar (competing with the likes of Snookie and American Idol, wtf). We decided to avoid the lawsuit and play a classic Van Halen cover instead to get you primed for the new one. Trust us, it's worth going out and picking up.
The second break of the show features David Lee Roth extolling the virtues of the Decibel Geek podcast. We also hear from an inanimate object that is near and dear to a former WASP guitarist's heart (and liver).
The next 2 songs feature polar opposite bands but equally enjoyable. One is known for providing levity and humor in their records and their movie. The other was a legend that's music still holds up today against all of the other metal bands that they inspired.
Next up is a band that you've probably never heard of covering a song of another band you've probably never heard of. Exciting right? Aaron really pulled out a gem with this one. Midnight Moses was originally performed by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band but covered beautifully on this track by Spearfish.
Our next break includes Nigel Tufnel explaining why the Decibel Geek podcast is the only show that goes to eleven. We also hear from Mama Cass in her final moments.
We wrap up the show with some bands that each of us dig from the 1990's. Chris spins a track from a band that many of our listeners probably consider rap-metal but there's no doubt that musically this track slams. Go ahead and start writing your hate mail; we can take it. Aaron closes things out with a track from a band that Chris can't stand. In all fairness, Chris has only heard the one track that this band is known for so Aaron decides to expose him to a new slice of said group's catalog. Will Chris dig it? Wait and see.
That's all we got this week. Can you believe we got through all of these show notes and didn't say one thing about the Super Bowl? Dammit!!!

I have liked it onfacebook and posted a comment there (my name is Jeff Hogland). I also copied and slightly augmented my previous response here onto the comments section of the website.

I listened to the top five 80's kiss songs this afternoon and will post my two cents worth later.

Just listened to episode 9 (Top 5 KISS songs - Non-makeup years)

Loved this show.  Glad you are playing songs now though.  There's nothing like a top 5 list.  But I've always found it peculiar that folks always say "in no particular order".  I think it makes it tougher to put them in order, so that's how I roll .

Anyway, I'm giving my Top 5 Paul songs and my Top 5 Gene songs, then my overall Top 5 from the non-makeup years.  Here goes:

Paul

5. Heart Of Chrome (Revenge)
4. Thrills In The Night (Animalize)
3. Master & Slave (Revenge)
2. Tears Are Falling (Asylum)
1. Who Wants To Be Lonely (Asylum)

Gene

5. Spit (Revenge)
4. I Confess (COS)
3. Not For The Innocent (Lick It Up)
2. Secretly Cruel (Asylum)
1. Unholy (Revenge)

Overall

5. Secretly Cruel (Asylum)
4. Master & Slave (Revenge)
3. Tears Are Falling (Asylum)
2. Unholy (Revenge)
1. Who Wants To Be Lonely (Asylum)

The albums

5. Animalize
4. Revenge
3. Asylum
2. Lick It Up
1. Carnival Of Souls

I know.  Three songs from Asylum but it only places 3rd.  I judge the individual songs and the albums as a whole separately.  Anyway, this was a great episode.  I always enjoy any kind of Top 5 list regarding Kiss.

Chris, I just posted a review on iTunes.  It has not been reviewed or posted yet, but hopefully it will soon.  If it doesn't show my username, I titled it Decibel Geeks!! (They Love It Loud).

Just got done with Episode 22...

First off, as everyone can attest to here, I am by no means a Kiss fan but the cover of "Fox on The Run" by Ace Frehley was quite good, much better than what I expected. However, shoot me if you must, I like Sweet's version a little better. Frehley's versipn is much heavier, but for a goofy pop song, you can't top Sweet!

So cool that you had Kittie, who opened up for Kiss years ago, at least in Omaha. (Yes, I went. A friend conned me into going to a Kiss concert.) Never heard of Kittie before going and they were ok. Never gave much thought about them again until I picked up "In The Black" a couple years ago, and that album is just heavy and nasty. Great stuff.

And then there's White Lion....jeez, how sick they made me. Those two songs, "Wait" and "When The Children Cry" just made me ill. Sorry guys, I'm just telling it like it is! Saw them open for AC/DC and there were so many young girls there just to see White Lion. Sad, but true. Then I heard this song and liked it, but still had the bad taste of those other two songs in my mouth...haven't heard this version in years and still like it. However, I will not pick up any White Lion ever, so hearing this took care of a need I didn't know I had.

Ugly Kid Joe I never liked either, have never heard their version of "Live Wire" but this was good.

Anthrax and cover songs...so many good ones! Like their version of this song but my favorite cover song they did was Joe Jackson's "Got The Time". They just kick that song up a couple billion notches even though JJ's version wasn't a slow or mellow song to begin with.

The covers from Sebastian Bach, Metallica, Vince Neil and Primus, have heard these versions before and really nothing much to say except they do the originals proud.

Tuff was fun. However, if I'm at a bar and someone was to get up on a table and state that they liked Juice Newton and then someone else was to get up on another table and state they like Poison, I'm going with Juice Newton. Don't care what you do, don't care how much you pay me, Poison will never, ever do anything for me.

This is getting too damn long, and I ain't done yet!

"American Woman"...I got into Krokus because of that song, so it can't be THAT bad. Could it?

A couple of covers that are good are In This Moments cover of Blondie's "Call Me" and Kick Axe's version of "With A Little From My Friends" from some band kind of named after a bug.

Thanks for no Trixter!!!

And lastly, on my "iPod" I have Enya, Renaissance, Big Country, Bond and Duran Duran to go along with UFO, Iron Maiden, The Michael Schenker Group, Overkill, Lillian Axe, Opeth, Armored Saint, Ted Nugent, etc., etc. Is this wrong?

Great listen again!

Wow! So much feedback. You do us proud as a listener! Believe me, I'm not the biggest White Lion fan either but that cover is just SO good I had to include it. Also, check out the song Lady of the Valley. I do dig that one.

The only reason I didn't go with Anthrax doing Got the Time was everyone's familiarity with it. It is an awesome version though. I dig Joe Jackson too!

Poison is a fun party rock band and they were actually one of the very first rock bands to get me interested in guitar (hindsight is definitely 20/20 lol) but they have become less appealing over the years and Bret makes me want to rip his wig off with his publicity whoring so I'm with you there. It will take quite a few Jager bombs for me to make my public declaration of Juice-fandom but I appreciate the support haha.

There's nothing "wrong" on YOUR ipod. That's the beauty of music and why we like all kinds. The Defend Your iPod segment is meant purely for comic relief and we only skewer each other. You don't have to worry about us skewering you.....unless you have Bieber on there lol.

Bieber? Oh, hell no. But if people want to make fun of what I'm listening to, go right ahead. I have a perfectly valid reason for everything I listen to and would gladly defend myself to anyone. Chances are my reason is because "it's really not THAT bad", and that should be a good enough reason?

And you're right about the beauty of music and listening to all kinds. I read the interview you had with the gentleman working on a movie version of "The Elder" (Kiss' best album, period) and saw that he liked ABBA. I like ABBA too, and am not afraid to admit it. First and foremost will always be metal/hard rock, but sometimes you need to break away and by doing that, you might discover something out there that's better than you ever thought it would be.

Except Bieber. He will always suck.

Just listened to the Jan Kuehnemund (Vixen) interview and enjoyed it. Not a Vixen fan, but still a nice listen.

Glad you enjoyed the interview. That is exactly our aim with the interviews; to make them interesting to anyone listening.

There won't be a new episode this week. I'm pretty sick with a stomach bug and Aaron Camaro is out of town attending a funeral. Promise there will be a new episode next week on 3/15. Sorry we couldn't get one out this week.

Get well bro.

Episode 24 - Bizarro Covers

After a quick week off, we're back and we're spinning more covers but things are a little different this time. We're not going with tried and true covers this time. This time, we're going into the Bizarro World with some of the strangest rock and metal covers that still kick ass.

These are tunes that were not necessarily originally intended for the rock and metal world but some visionary artists decided to show that, as Autograph, prophesied back in the 1980's, things go better with rock!

We start the show with some talk about ourrecent discussion with Jan Kuehnemund of Vixen and the response we received as well as the swell new look of our official website and news on our Facebook fan page. We had to whore ourselves out a little.

Moving on, we get into the music with our lone straight ahead rock cover. We had to go with this track because we couldn't squeeze it in on the Under Covers episode and it just plain kicks ass (regardless of band members' political views).

We're not going to be spoilers and give away the tunes we're playing. What fun would that be?

So, kick back with a cold bevereage, crank the show, and stay frosty!

I was just coming here to post this hahaha. Man, you are ON it! Thanks a bunch and I hope you dig the new one!

I really did enjoy the show.  I posted it this morning, but didn't have enough time to comment.  Which I will do now.

I love stuff like this.  I think it's really cool how a band can take a non-hard rock or metal song and rock it up.  It even works well in reverse sometimes.  I think you guys made some great choices.  My favorites were:

Strange Ways (Kiss) by Megadeth - Although I don't think this is particularly bizzaro.  Megadeth does a great cover.  This really brings out the drumming and the underlying riff of that song.  It's a way underrated song in the Kiss catalog.

Fire And Rain (James Taylor) by Badlands - Badlands have quite a few fans at Classic Rock Bottom.  I don't have either album, but that probably needs to change.  Gillen sounded almost like Axl Rose at the very beginning of the song.

I'm Easy (The Commodores) by Faith No More - I happen to be a fan of the original, but the vocalist really does a fantastic job on this, just like you guys mentioned.

I can't remember the name of the song, but it was the Anthrax cover of the Joe Jackson song.  I only know JJ's hits, but this was probably the best cover you played.  Like you guys said, the bass line is incredible.  I need some Anthrax and Joe Jackson for my collection.

And finally, the Poison cover of Timberlake's Sexy Back.  I have no problem with a rock band remaking a song like this.  However, you should check out Rivethead's cover of the same song.  It's better, in my humble opinion of course.  I looked on youtube to see if I could find it with no luck.  But maybe, if I still have it, I'll link a player and see if you can take a listen.

Here's a few that I think would fit, along with the Rivethead cover:

1. Rusty Cage (Soundgarden) by Johnny Cash

2. Hells Bells (AC/DC) by Gregorian (click the link to listen)

3. Careless Whisper (George Michael) by Seether

I know I had some more, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.  Anyway, great show.
