Classic Rock Bottom

My turn, and the topic this week is... Top 5 Best Guitarists Of The 80's

But.....there's one rule: The guitarist must not have appeared on a "debut-record" earlier than 1/1-1980 and not later than 31/12-1989.

5. Jake E. Lee (Debut with Rough Cutt in 1981)

4. Steve Vai (Debut on Frank Zappa's "Tinseltown Rebellion" 1981)

3. George Lynch (Debut on Dokken's "Breaking The Chains" 1983)

2. Ty Tabor ( Debut on "Sneak Preview" 1983(? not sure if this was an official release?))

1. Nuno Bettencourt ( Debut on "Extreme" 1989)

And now it's YOUR turn to come up with something better, if you can!!

Style is not a factor at all.  As long as their debut was after 1/1/80 or before 12/31/89 they qualify.  Now, where's your top 5 list?  C'mon bro, I know you love this stuff.  And I still don't remember seeing Whitesnake in Atlanta in 1987.  You must be thinking of somebody else, but I do remember you "reminding" me of this before.

I have that DLR album, but I've probably only listened to it once.

No, all geetarists should be considered. I was thinking Hammett, Poland as well, but went with my list (maybe it's final?)?

And don't forget Tygers Of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy for Sykes.

Oh-oh...updating!

5. Joe Satriani

4. Steve Vai

3. Paul Gilbert

2. Nuno Bettencourt

1. John Sykes

Gilbert just popped into my head a few minutes ago, there is no way I cannot include him. I am very hesitant to drop Ty, but I think I still have time to change my list again.

5. Chris DeGarmo (Queensryche)

4. Jake E. Lee (Ozzy, Badlands)

3. Criss Oliva (Savatage)

2. Jim Mattheos (Fates Warning)

1. Joe Satriani

Ahh yes.... a list near and dear to my heart! But I dont like this rule! But I shall follow the rules, least I be attacked by a Viking Invader!

1 - Nuno (he's number 2 on my all time list, so definitely number 1 from the 80's...freaking phenomenal musician!)

2 - Criss Oliva (major shredder, but so much more...just listen to his work, and you can hear his classical training, but in a rock style, throughout his career. May he rest in peace!!)

3 - Paul Gilbert (very tough choice to put Gilbert over Lynch)

4 - George Lynch

5 - Jake E. Lee - ( I always thought his playing on "The Ultimate Sin" Ozzy record was great enough to rank him in the same stratosphere as Rhodes).

Honorable mentions - Frank Hannon of Tesla...Skeoch is good, but not as good as Frank IMO...Jerry Riggs of Riggs, and then later Pat Travers Band...Ronnie Garvin of Stranger (R.I.P.)

Gilbert!

5. Slash

4. George Lynch

3. John Sykes

2. Joe Satriani

1. Steve Vai

5. JEFF WATSON

4. ADRIAN VANDENBERG

3. WARREN DIMARTINI

2. GEORGE LYNCH

1. SLASH

Last chance on given your own version of a top-5 with guitarists from the 80's (remember read the one and only rule)

I will close this one on sunday.

The voting is closed now, and here's the result:

Guitarist Votes Points Rank
John Sykes 5 49 1
Slash 5 45 2
George Lynch 6 44 3
Nuno Bettencourt 4 42 4
Steve Vai 5 33 5

I don't see any bad choices here.  I'm happy.  I would like to hear some of Sykes work though.  Any suggestions?

Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning

Tygers of Pan Tang - Spellbound and Crazy Nights

Whitesnake - Whitesnake

Blue Murder
