Classic Rock Bottom

NEW MUSIC CORNER #23 (Atomic Tom, Spocks Beard, Steve Lukather)

NEW MUSIC CORNER #23
December 9th 2010
by Scott

What does a new band, a prog band and one of rocks best guitarists have in common?  You guessed it, they are all featured in this week's NMC!

Enjoy...

ATOMIC TOM - THE MOMENT (July 2010)
1. Let Let Go Tonight
2. The Moment
3. Take Me Out
4. We Were Never Meant To Be
5. Play That Dirty Girl

(From PUREGRAINAUDIO.COM)
For some reason when I read the name ‘Atomic Tom’ I assumed this band would make some kind of weird fuzz/punk/garage/indy music. I don’t know why that’s what I was expecting, but it was. I was really surprised when it turned out to be a traditional, serious rock record.

This record is definitely worth a listen if you’re into alternative or rock bands like Bloc Party, Our Lady Peace or even The Killers. There’s something to be said for really talented rock bands, and it seems like Atomic Tom are just that

SPOCKS BEARD - X (Sept 2010)
6. Edge Of The In Between (length=10:29)
7. From The Darkness (length=17:10)
8. The Quiet House (length=9:12)

(From PROGARCHIVES.COM)
The reality is that there is so much of this album to explore. This is more than a complete offering: it is Spock's Beard removing the monkey off of their back and getting back down to the business of creating great music. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, and hopefully marks an exciting new direction from a band that has made some great contributions to progressive music in the present day. "X" is easily worth 5 stars.

STEVE LUKATHER - ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL (Oct 2010)
9. Darkness In My World
10. On My Way Home
11. Flash In The Pan
12. You'll Remember
13. Tumescent (Instrumental)

(From GUITAR-CHANNEL.COM)
The new album is laden with extraordinary guitar playing performed across some of the best and most emotional songs of Steve’s career. Fee Waybill of the Tubes is featured on backing vocals and contributes to some of the co-song writing with CJ Vanston and Lukather.

It seems to be working fine over here.  no issues at all....  sorry pal!

ATOMIC TOM (Thumbs 45 degrees up)

I really enjoyed the mix of classic rock riff's and new wave beats.  I kind of got this band right away!  I ran across them mistakenly while through some new music sites with my son.  I like about 75% of this album and will definitely be interested in their future releases.  There was an article on them stating they expect to be an Arena band and that's the goal.  I can hear this style of music playing well in an arena...

SPOCKS BEARD (Thumbs way up)

I love prog, especially with a classic rock flare!  A co-worker of mine got me listening to this band somewhere around 2000.  I liked some of the early stuff they did but didn't really care for some of the later stuff.  This one really caught my eye because  of the album cover.  Kinda cool to get that feeling back again, you know?  And so I downloaded in from Zune marketplace and listened.  Liked it so much I picked it up as soon as I could.  Just a real nice mixture of sounds on this one.  I posted only 3 tracks because the CD only contains 7.

STEVE LUKATHER (Thumbs way up)

I love Toto, and the for the most part I love them even more after they fell off the music chart scene.  Good point RJ - Lukathers solo releases have been hit or miss, but this one was so cool when I first heard it.  Rock guitar, jazz influenced jam sessions!  This one comes during a dark time in Lukeathers life.  Divirce, Toto breaking up and gettgin back, all sort of emotions on this to hear and feel.  I love this release.  May have to revise by 2010 top ten because the more I listen to it, the more I like it.
