ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE COLOR RED PT.1

This was one of the very few times I sat down to do a show and had nothing in mind.
I was thinking about next week's broadcast and it kind of sneaked up on me that I had to do one for this week.
What was I to do?
Well I had earlier in the week found an unmarked cassette that I threw in the player, and it was Steve Goodman visiting Vin Scelsa on an Easter Sunday on WNEW-FM.
That  became an annual Easter Morning tradition in the mid-70's, and the visits were subsequently released as an album called The Easter Tapes in 1996.
Tell you what, why don't I just open with what I heard and explain how I got here.
A strange show, but I've said that before, lol!

Thanks, I try to limit myself to partial suckiness, lol!

And nice...we got another "suck" in here!

Don't hold back those critical opinions Jon, lol!

Warrant isn't heavy metal. Warrant is complete suckiness and you don't play complete suckiness.

RJ,
That is amazing!
I called the Elias Sports Bureau and that IS the first and only time you've ever agreed with "THREE" things Jon said- it's a new record, lol!
Like I told him, don't know why, but I am surprised youboth  feel Red Hill Mining Town is U2's greatest song.
I woudn't have thought to go there.
Too bad I didn't play that cover sooner, if you know what I mean!
I too am glad I played Neil Diamond's version cause you've never heard it- and I see you don't like UB40's either.
I gotta tell you though, there is still something nagging me about that Neil version...it's like I felt that was a re-recording...that it in fact was not the orginal.
But I let it go cause I didn't want to leave my chair and dig out old Neil songs, lol!
Didn't play Warrant, mainly because I don't know it- you guys know certain, maybe heavier metal shall we say, bands better than I do.
I heard it in both ears, but that Beatles tune was recorded in a German club before they were famous, and with primitive equipment compared to what we have now.
I mean that was back in 1962!
And of all the Somebody Patrick Clarks, you missed the actual name Kerry, lol!
But he wins the coveted Golden Pell!
He is a real nice guy, told him I would play it, and he wrote me to thank me for playing it.
I pointed out the Golden Pell awarding to him, and we laughed abut the first name business!
No Lady In Red- didn't think of it and doubt if I could have reached it from my chair, lol
Thanks for the listen and writing bro, you were right on this one,
Mike

Jon,
Interesting that both you and RJ think Red Hill Mining Town is U2's best song!
While I am very much into lyrics, I wouldn't have picked that one if asked.
Glad I played it for you two though, maybe saved my butt in this show, lol!
I don't know if UB40's version of Red Red Wine sucked, but it was very different.
And true, they overplayed it on MTV, the radio and anyplace else it could be heard.
Think we could work in "sucked" one more time, lol?
Oh you conspiracy theorist, it was a spur of the moment thing, I wouldn't have said anything if it wasn't.
Frankly, I am surprised at how much people seemed to like it- I put almost no effort into it.
Makes me wonder about the shows I work so much for!
Not only was that song from before when the Beatles did drugs (well maybe some uppers, cause they played for like 16 hours a day in Germany back then), but that was before they were well-known!
Whew, thankfully I did not lose the slight respect you have for me by playing a Warrant song, lol!
You are clear on that...and the Jersey thing with the Sopranos.
And you closed with the rarely seen NICE Jon, "Have a nice day!"
I am speechless, lol!
Thanks for the listen and writing pal, you always make me laugh,
Mike

Hard to believe, but I'm gonna agree with "THREE" things Jon said:

Red Hill Mining Town is U2's greatest song.  I heard this cover version a couple of years ago on the podcast Coverville and loved it.  I actually spent money on a download cause I only wanted that one song.  It is possibly the best cover I've ever heard.

Neil Diamond's version of Red Red Wine is good.  UB40's is not.  Never was.  Glad you played Diamond's version cause I've never heard it...until now.

Please don't play Warrant.  Nuff said.

That's where I draw the line on agreeing with Jon.  I didn't care for the Beatles (staple)tune.  I got no sound out of the right ear bud.  Hurt my ears.

I liked the John Sebastian (staple) song but the Golden Pell is going to Somebody Patrick Clark, couldn't tell if you said Terry or Carey or maybe even Larry.  But Little Red Riding Hood was a cool song.  The former was a bit better than the latter, but both were enjoyable.

Nice show.  Also, don't The Lady In Red.  Nah, just kiddin', you can play it, I've liked it ever since it was used in the movie Dodgeball.

"Red Hill Mining Town" is my favorite U2 song of all time. Just an amazing song.

UB40's version of "Red Red Wine" sucks. They overplayed it on MTV and it didn't help that the band sucked. The original version is so much better. It doesn't suck like UB40, who sucked.

I liked the beginning of the show. For a spur of the moment thing, it was really good. Unless it wasn't spur of the moment. Then it was still good.

This was a good show, even the song from the Beatles considering it was done before they did drugs.

The only thing I request is that you do NOT play a Warrant song during this set of shows. It's a horrible song. You play it, I lose the slight respect I have for you. Do I make myself clear? Remember, I'm from Jersey and that's all that needs to be said about that.

Have a nice day!
