Classic Rock Bottom

This week I'm reflecting on the impact this site has had on my musical journey.  Looking back at my collection I can see huge impact.

TITLE: Do Me (Long Way From Home)
BAND: Electric Mary
ALBUM: Down To The Bone
YEAR: 2008
LENGTH: 4:02
DID YOU KNOW: 2009 has seen them tour with Alice Cooper and Glenn Hughes as well as showcasing at Experience PRS for PRS Guitars in Stevensville, Maryland alongside the likes of Carlos Santana, Dweezil Zappa and Buddy Guy. In 2010 they supported Deep Purple.

This site has introduced me too new bands in ways that have been more accessible than could have envisioned.  I've come to appreciate the global view of rock and roll more, and I learned to agree to disagree.  But in today’s rock and roll climate getting new music is not easily done and CRB knocks that category out of the park!  Electric Mary, released in 2008 won't make a New Music Corner, but if it rocks we'll find it!

TITLE: Edge Of The In Between
BAND: Spocks Beard
ALBUM: X
YEAR: 2010
LENGTH: 10:28
DID YOU KNOW: Similar to what Marillion did for Anoraknophobia, the album was funded by pre-orders of a limited edition of the album before the album was recorded. Those who ordered the album's "Ultra Package" had their names listed in the CD booklet and included as part of the track "Their Names Escape Me", which is exclusive to the limited edition.

Not only does CRB give new music a chance, it gives classic bands a forum to find new listeners.  Yah, I know, were small - but how many people do you share your music with that are not on this site and how many do they share with etc... etc...  Spocks Beard was a band I knew about but never listened to, now I can’t get enough of them.

TITLE: Symphony Of Destruction
BAND: Megadeth
ALBUM: Countdown To Extinction
YEAR: 1982
LENGTH: 4:06
DID YOU KNOW: Countdown to Extinction was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards and the title track of the album won the Humane Society's Genesis Award, making Megadeth the only heavy metal band to be given this honor.

CRB allowed me to appreciate Classic Artists that I used to disregard.  Megadeth is a band I listened to, but never purchased or gave much of a chance back when they hit the scene, I just didn't like them!  Now I own 3 CD's and have ordered the 25th anniversary edition of Peace Sells.  I just need more time to listen to the rest of their output and a second job to afford it.

TITLE: Dog Eat Dog
BAND: Ted Nugent
ALBUM: Free For All
YEAR: 1976
LENGTH: 4:03
DID YOU KNOW: An unknown (at the time) vocalist named Meat Loaf was brought in to sing on some of the album's tracks that were meant for Holmes, Those tracks include "Writing on the Wall", "Street Rats", "Together", "Hammerdown", and "I Love You So I Told You a Lie".

CRB also gave me the idea to go back and re-listen to albums from my brother’s collection.  Once upon a time they were easily accessible, now they're not, and I lost track of a few of them, like this one!  I loved this album for so long, how did I let it get lost?  Well, not anymore, I own it too...

TITLE: Rosalie
BAND: Thin Lizzy
ALBUM: Fighting
YEAR:  1975
LENGTH: 3:01
DID YOU KNOW: Fighting is the only other Thin Lizzy album aside from their 1971 debut album where band members other than Phil Lynott receive sole songwriting credits for certain tracks. Eric Bell wrote "Ray Gun" on the debut, and Robertson and Gorham solely wrote "Silver Dollar" and "Ballad of a Hard Man", respectively.

I also got a chance to go check out back catalogs of bands I liked a little bit of.  For example, when I was young and impressionable Jailbreak was huge!  I love that album, but never really picked up much else from Thin Lizzy except for Renegade in 80.  But CRB forced me to go back and listen to some bands other releases giving me a new appreciation for them.  In the case of Thin Lizzy, I think I'm waiting for the Deluxe packaging of Bad Reputation and I will have most of their catalog (with the exception of their very first two)

Thanks CRB!  You've also made me poorer and while I don't like that, I love the music I'm getting into now and the friends I've made, so I will continue to feed my habit as long as you all hang around too.  Heck I’ve even got a chance to meet one of you so far!
