Classic Rock Bottom

More unintended collusion with the Album and Lost Album of the Week postings from earlier this week...

For me, Black Sabbath is a band I didn’t grow up with.  My older brother influenced my listening more than anyone I can think of, so because he was not much of a Black Sabbath fan I was never exposed to them very much until I sat and listened to Heaven and Hell in High School - that was a life-changing listening moment.

However ... to stick with the sites theme; these 5 songs represent my earliest recollection of music I would consider "Pioneering Heavy Metal"

Lets get to it...

PLAYLIST VITALS...

Length: 19 minutes 53 seconds
Link: http://www.podsnack.com/playlists/579380855fd06268318c0244a1045323

TITLE: Traveller In Time
BAND: Uriah Heep
ALBUM: Demons And Wizards
YEAR: 1972
LENGTH: 3:23
DID YOU KNOW: The album’s title and Roger Dean's sleeve both suggest that the band was working medieval myth into their songs. To discard any possible insinuations concerning any kind of concept behind it, Hensley's note on the sleeve declared the album to be "just a collection of our songs that we had a good time recording".

This album has some hidden imagery on it as well.  For a young boy, studying the cover art was  pretty significant.  But also, the music was mystical and cool and had an aura about it no matter what Hensley said.

TITLE: Bad Bad Boy
BAND: Nazareth
ALBUM: Razamanaz
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 3:56
DID YOU KNOW: After getting some attention with their second album "Exercises", released in 1972, Nazareth supported Deep Purple on tour, and issued the Roger Glover-produced "Razamanaz", in early 1973. This collection spawned two UK Top Ten hits, "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy".

I always thought the scratchy vocals were what made this so metal!  I'm still right...

TITLE: Too Young To Know
BAND: U.F.O.
ALBUM: Phenomenon
YEAR: 1974
LENGTH: 2:25
DID YOU KNOW: Iron Maiden performed a cover of "Doctor Doctor" when Blaze Bayley was with the band as their vocalist. Traditionally, Iron Maiden plays the original UFO version at live venues to notify fans that their show is about to begin.

I read that prior to Schenker joining them they were a "Space Rock" outfit.  Creating tunes some 26 minutes long.  Man, am I glad they changed!

TITLE: Man On The Silver Mountain
BAND: Rainbow
ALBUM: Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
YEAR: 1975
LENGTH: 4:41
DID YOU KNOW: Two of the songs on the album were cover versions. "Black Sheep of the Family" was a cover of a song recorded by Quatermass, and "Still I'm Sad" was an instrumental cover of a Yardbirds track.

My first introduction to Dio!  Classic album from top to bottom and the perfect lead-in to the next track...

TITLE: Rat Bat Blue
BAND: Deep Purple
ALBUM: Who Do You Think We Are
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 5:26
DID YOU KNOW: This was Deep Purple's last album with the Mark II lineup of the group until Perfect Strangers in 1984.

Machine Head was my first Deep Purple listen, but I really took to the sound of this one.  A Sonic masterpiece in my opinion!

I wanna be in on this too: I've also only got one of the albums, bought it back in '79. Can you guess which one?

1. Oh, I like the UH-sound.  Good riff on this track. I kinda think, that the singer sounds like Ian Gillan. Maybe they were called a light version of DP? (8/10)

2. Nazareth was definetly inspired by Black Sabbath, but Axl Rose was for sure very much inspired by, or even copied Dan Mccafferty. Not one of my favorites by that band. (6.5/10)

3. I think UFO were best in the first couple of records. But never one of my favorite-bands. I have tried, though. (6/10)

4. CLASSIC!! Rainbow is always going to be one of my alltime-favorite bands. (10/10)

5. DP without Ritchie Blackmoore, ain't DP!!! This is DP, and a great track. (8.5/10)

I think the album you have is Rithcie Blackmores Rainbow.
Actually, it's the only Rainbow-album, that I never did buy!!!

hmmm ...  then its just gotta be UFO...

Oh no, it ain't. Give up?
I was thinking Uriah Heep.
Haha, two left!!!!!

well, then I'll go with Nazareth since youve posted them before....

..and you're absolutely right. Nazareth was the second band, that I bought more than one album by. In '78-'79, I must have bought 6 or 7 Nazareth-albums,  I guess.
