Playlist Vitals

TITLE: Woman From Tokyo ('99 Remix Version)
ARTIST: Deep Purple
ALBUM: Who Do We Think We Are (Expanded And Remastered)
YEAR: 1972
LENGTH: 6:42

DID YOU KNOW: This digitally remastered version of the LP was released in 2000 with bonus tracks. "First Day Jam" is a lengthy instrumental jam featuring Blackmore (on bass), Lord and Paice. Glover (the group's usual bassist) was absent, lost in traffic.  "Woman from Tokyo" was recorded in July 1972 and is about touring Japan for the first time (e.g. the lyric "Fly into the Rising Sun"). The only other track released from the Rome sessions is the out-take "Painted Horse". The rest of the album was recorded in Frankfurt after more touring (including Japan).

TITLE: Dirty White Boy [Remix]
ARTIST: Foreigner
ALBUM: Can't Slow Down (Disc 2)
YEAR: 2009
LENGTH: 3:39

DID YOU KNOW: Can't Slow Down was one of several recent classic rock releases (AC/DC, The Eagles, Journey, and Kiss being four others) to be released exclusively through the Wal-Mart stores chain in the US while in Europe the album has been released by earMUSIC (a label part of the Edel group), charting top 20 in Germany (16) and Top 30 in Switzerland.

TITLE: Wheel In The Sky
ARTIST: Journey
ALBUM: Revelation (Disc 2)
YEAR: 2008
LENGTH: 5:01

DID YOU KNOW: On its first week of release, Revelation sold over 105,000 copies, marking a 1,400% increase over the first week sales of the band's 2005 release Generations. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Independent Album Chart, No. 2 on Billboard rock album charts, and No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Revelation stayed on the billboard 200 album charts for 24 weeks in the United States. The album was not only a huge success in the United States, but also reached the charts in 6 different countries. Revelation reached the charts in Sweden at #28, #35 in Germany, Great Britain at #68, Netherlands at #72, Switzerland at #89, Norway at #97 and Philippines at #1.

TITLE: The Boys Are Back In Town (Alt Vocal Re-Mix Version)
ARTIST: Thin Lizzy
ALBUM: Jailbreak (Deluxe Edition - Disc 2)
YEAR: 2011  (Originally in 1976)
LENGTH: 4:32

DID YOU KNOW: Originally released on 26 March 1976, it featured the worldwide hit "The Boys Are Back in Town" which reached no. 8 in the UK, and no. 12 in the US, their first charting record in that country. The twin guitar sound had been fully developed by this time and was in evidence throughout the album, particularly on the hit single, and other tracks such as "Emerald" and "Warriors". The album also charted well on both sides of the Atlantic, and the follow-up single, "Jailbreak", also performed well. Thin Lizzy toured the US in support of various bands such as Aerosmith, Rush and REO Speedwagon, and they planned to tour there again in June 1976, this time with Rainbow. However, Lynott fell ill with hepatitis and the tour was cancelled.

TITLE: Hold On
ARTIST: Triumph
ALBUM: Greatest Hits: Remixed
YEAR: 2010
LENGTH: 6:05

DID YOU KNOW: Triumph's third album, Just a Game (1979), featured a minor US radio hit, "Hold On," which reached the Top 40. The album eventually went gold in the US. Hold On made it to #38 on Billboard: and it became a significant song in some select markets. In St. Louis, for example, the song made it to #1 on KSHE, an AOR-FM classic rock radio station. More significantly, the song 'Lay It On The Line' received an even greater acceptance at AOR-FM radio across the U.S. and Canada. The heavy-rotation FM radio airplay of 'Lay It On The Line' solidified the band in the minds of classic rock audiences.

Next week we'll call it a year and re-cap my favorite treasures from 2011.  I think its a been a good year for classic rock!

nope.

wait a minute...  Did I finally find a Triumph tune you like?

5 for 5 on this one, Scott! All great tunes. And are you saying Jon does not like Triumph??? Say whuutt???

And on the Deep Purple tune, I think they have added some additional guitar lead that was not present on the original recording. I could be wrong...been a while since I heard this classic, but I think some additional lead was added.

Good post to listen too!

Yes, 1,3 & 5. I don't hate Triumph (I thought Thunder Seven was one of the greatest albums EVER) and had everything from Allied Forces on, on vinyl. Alas, I grew older and smarter and figured that they really weren't that great.

The 3 I picked are actual remixes, not remakes, that's why I picked 'em. Could really care less about remakes, if the original is good, why bother. I loathe the Foreigner remake, the vocals are mixed waaaaaay to the front and it annoys me.

While Thin Lizzy is not really a remix, it's Thin Lizzy fer cryin' out loud! It's not a remake, it's just a different version of the song from way back then.

Finally! someone with great taste!  Thanks Gordon...
