Classic Rock Bottom

VOTW - NEIL YOUNG SPECIALI kind of have it with Neil Young, as I have it with Dylan: I had to be a bit "old", before I could appreciate the music. I didn't hate neither Dylan or Young, it just wasn't music for me. Or so I thought. I bought Neil Youngs "Decade"-CD for about 10 years ago. It's a best of, but only from the 60's and 70's. It's a double CD, and just like the Best of-cd's I've got by The Kinks and Frank Zappa, it's pure gold, not any filler. I've bought more music by Young since, but Decade is what I hear the most.

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD - MR. SOUL

(Appering on Decade) "Mr. Soul" is written by Young, and first recorded by folk rock band Buffalo Springfield and released on their second album, Buffalo Springfield Again. It was originally recorded on January 9, 1967 at Atlantic Studios, New York with an additional recording on April 4, 1967. The song was adapted by rock band Rush and featured on the 2004 covers album Feedback.

CROSSBY, STILL, NASH & YOUNG - DOWN BY THE RIVER

(Appears on Decade) "Down by the River" is another song composed by Neil Young. It was first released on his 1969 album with Crazy Horse, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album Decade, stating that he wrote "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" while delirious in bed in Topanga Canyon with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.

NEIL YOUNG - OLD MAN

(Appear on Decade) My absolute favorite Neil Young-song. It was written for the caretaker of the Northern California Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the young man has, to some extent, the same needs as the old one. James Taylor played six-string banjo (tuned like a guitar) and sang on the song, and Linda Ronstadt also contributed vocals, not on this version, though.

NEIL YOUNG - HARVEST MOON

Harvest Moon is the twentieth studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released in 1992. Many of the musicians appearing on it also appeared on his 1972 album Harvest, and it is considered by many to be like a "sequel" to Harvest. The album earned the 1994 Juno Award for album of the year. This is probably on the 2nd. spot on my top-list of young-songs.

NEIL YOUNG + Promise Of The Real - A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop

And finally a brandnew music video for “A Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop“.The song appears on the forthcoming album, The Monsanto Years. The album will be released through Reprise on June 29, 2015.

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD ...

What a line up!!!  Was that Richie Furay on the rhythm geetar off to the left?  The tune is cool, has that Day Tripper vibe. This band begot some of the greats... CSN, and Poco to name the two that most influenced me.  Just getting back from vacation and wanted to check this out, got some catchin' up to do!  more to come...

Mr. Soul - Dig this song.  I think the backing vocals are cool.  The riff is very Stones"ish"...I'm thinking Satisfaction.  I'm not sure when that was released, so I don't know which song came first.  Maybe the Stones sounded Buffalo Springfield"ish". Is that David Crosby with the hat on?  Couldn't really get a good look.  They moved around quite a bit for a folk band.  I'm giving the video and song a thumbs up.

Down By The River -  Like this one too.  Neil Young has a very distinct guitar playing style.  Not a hundred percent sure, but that sounds live (not lip synced).  The folks sitting there watching were cracking me up.  And Young looked like he might still have that fever.  This is another double thumbs up.

Old Man - My favorite NY track too.  The acoustic work on this track is out of this world.  I certainly prefer the studio version, but this live version is excellent as well.  I think I prefer the studio version simply because of the dynamic harmonizing in the vocals.  Definitely two thumbs up here.

Harvest Moon - Our first disagreement.   Not really, but I've never thought that much of this song.  It's definitely not bad, just not anything that stands out to me.  That backing vocalist on the left looks kinda like Gena Davis.  And how is he in the band and on the dance floor?  Seriously though, this is the first actual video so far.  It's nothing to write home about either, so double thumbs sideways here.

A Rock Star Bucks... - Can't say I'm looking forward to this album.  I don't have any problem with anyone writing songs from a political agenda, but other than the Disney style whistling (are you listening Mike Pell?  I here whistling) the song is just not all that good.  He got a lot older and his band got a lot younger.  Double thumbs down for me.

So I get three great songs, one so-so song and one filler tune.  I do like his early stuff and I definitely need to pick up some Buffalo Springfield.  Good job Niels.

My guess is, that it's Crossby with the hat. A cool/funny guy in that "video". Yes, it's very Stonish, that riff. Can't say, when Young wrote that song. He did start early, and it might had been written years before it was recorded. But Satisfaction is from 1965, as far as I remember, and this one was first recorded in 1967.

I prefer the studio-version of "Old Man" as well. I love that banjo!! And bass.

Harvest Moon was kind of the first (new) song by Young, that I noticed back in ´92, and it got me thinking, that he actually had made some fine songs in the past. I love the riff, and the "broom"-sound.

Yeah, I thought about Mike Pell too. I don't really buy new Young-albums anymore. He was best in the early days (as many, many other artists).

Its Stephen Stills...  Crosby was in The Byrds

So no ones willing to admit that I'm right that its Stephen Stills in the Buffalo Springfield video and not David Crosby!  Fine!

That CSN&Y vid is awesome!  Loads of fun!

To me Harvest and Harvest Moon are musty haves in any Classic Rock fans collection.  But if I was forced to choose between the two, it would be Harvest much like everyone else.

I don't mind the new tune at all!  Even the whistling, though I would agree that its not on my short list or purchases and likely wont make it onto it.  As far as political charged lyrics, this is nothing new to any NY album or tune.  Its kinda like Stanley/SImmons writing about sex/girls.

Nice Post!  Love the VOTW direction as of late!

Oh yes, I admitted it on Facebook a few days ago. Thought you saw it.

Thank you, Scott.

I have maybe 5 or 6 VOTW's lined up, and then 3 to 4 more idea's, and after that, we'll see :-)
Must've missed it on Facebook, no matter, I was just pickin'
