Before I post my ratings, I'd like to say that Mike Pell and I have been going back and forth about the merits of Christmas music over the last couple of weeks. My opinion is, I don't care for Christmas music. However, after hearing several of his shows of Christmas music, I decided to make a playlist for myself, but only of Christmas songs that are off the beaten path that really appeal to me. I'll use this VOTW episode to see if I can add anymore songs to that playlist.
Paul McCartney (1.5 points)
Well, right off the bat I'd like to add this one. This is a cool song that I've never heard. But I have a couple of questions. Did he write it, or is it a cover? Also, is it a true Christmas song? Maybe Niels can answer both questions. Meanwhile, I give a point to the song, and 0.5 points to the video. It's not that I liked the video, but it is McCartney and the black and white location shot, while not particularly original, is very nice.
Bob Dylan (0 points)
Not a good song at all to me. The only good thing about the video is the chick with really "lice negs" that walks down the stairs at the 33 second mark. I'd be okay without ever hearing this again.
The Darkness (1.5 points)
Hey, I kinda like this song too. I get a pretty strong Queen vibe from it, anybody else? This is a possible add on to my playlist. I have an album from these guys. Aren't they disbanded? I need to go back and listen to the album I have. Anyway, 0.75 points for the song, 0.5 points for the video, cause it's somewhat funny, but not hilarious.
Slade (0 points)
Don't care for it.
Udo (- 2 points)
This is ridiculously terrible. The worst thing Christmas related that I've ever heard. As much as I'm not a fan of Christmas music, even it should not be degraded like this. I hope no children ever see this bag of shit.
U2 (0.5 points)
Nothing particularly grand about this one. But it's okay. I don't think I'd put it on my playlist, but it's much better than the previous junk. I'll give the half point to the song.
Wizzard (0 points)
Again, I just don't care for it. Don't hate it, but don't care for it. It's just too happy. I like the laid back, semi-slow, almost folk sounding Christmas songs, with an occasional exception, like The Darkness above.
All in all, nice post with a Holiday flavor Niels. And you gave me 2 more songs to find and add to my Christmas playlist.
Hmmmm, questions!!! I don't THINK that it is a TRUE christmas-song, but the video sure is!! McCartney DID make a true christmas-song, I can't remember the title, I think it was "A Wonderful Christmas-time", but it was'nt very good. I've ALLWAYS loved this one, and I'm sure, that McCartney wrote it, he might have given some credit to Linda, but I'm sure he wrote it.
And yes, The Darkness is no more. I never bought an album, but I really like this christmas-song!!
What?????!!! Don't care for the Slade-song??????? It's only second to Lennon's "War is over" in best christmas-songs ever!!!!
Did you know, that Roy Wood from Wizzard was the original frontman in Elecric Light Orchestra (and The Move) ?? I don't think you did, did you???!!!
There are no birthdays today
