Classic Rock Bottom

Okay, since it's allmost Christmas, I thought we should have a christmas-special edition of VOTW, that means there's not going to be 5 new video's and 2 classic video's but instead 7 Christmas-video's. I'm sure there's a LOT of cheesefactor in some (?) of these video's so feel free to rate them all, or not, it's up to you. Next week will be a New Years-special, but VOTW should return in "normal" condition around the 5th of january 2011.

Have a merry christmas everybody!!!!

1. Paul McCartney - Once Upon A Long Ago

2. Bob Dylan - Must Be Santa

3. The Darkness - Christmas Time

4. Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody

5. Udo Dirkschneider - Jingle Bells

6. U2 - Baby Please Come Home (for Christmas)

7. Wizzard - I wish it could be christmas every day

Classy artist!  Love the vid and the song!

Bob Dylan ... (1 point)
I hope that's a wig he's wearing because it looks really bad, so I'm thinking its suppose to look that way since the video is silly also.  Theres a reason Bob was a 60's and 70's artist.  I'm thinking it was to keep away from videos.  1 point for the Traveling Wilbury's style Christmas tune, no points for the silly video

The Darkness ... (1 point with a cheese factor of 5)
Cheese galore!  Love the double neck Gibson, hated the two guys playing it at the same time.  Strangely, I liked the video, liked the tune also, hated the singing, but I knew what I was in for when I clicked on it.  1 point overall.  Medium cheese.

Slade ... (1 point)
I always get a kick out of watching this band.  They are better visually than the audibly.  But that is my opinion only.  The flying V was hilarious in this video, and the fact they don't care how off the lip syncing they are if great!  Fun to watch!

Udo Dirkschneider ... (1 point)
The Grinch banging his head was awesome!  Impaled by candy canes... awesome! I was thinking that the cookie monster vocals made the lyrics sound more like "Jingle Balls", pretty sure that's what they were singing especially after they broke into "Balls to the Wall".  Funny video, .5 points.  Not so much for the song, but it did help to round it out with the Accept tune.  .5 points

U2 ... (0 points)
My first thought is, eh...  A Christmas song doesn't really fit them well does it?  My final thought is, eh...  A Christmas song doesn't really fit them well!  0 points all around.

Wizzard ... (0 points with a cheezze factor of 8)
Never heard of them and now I know why!  hahaha.  Slade is so much better at this type of performance.  The Wizzard robezz and magical, myzztical feel of the bandzz cozztumes is totally lost in the song.  Even the kidzz on stage look confuzzed about it!  hahaha...  0 points with a cheezze factor of 8 due to the cozztumes of the band.

Before I post my ratings, I'd like to say that Mike Pell and I have been going back and forth about the merits of Christmas music over the last couple of weeks.  My opinion is, I don't care for Christmas music.  However, after hearing several of his shows of Christmas music, I decided to make a playlist for myself, but only of Christmas songs that are off the beaten path that really appeal to me.  I'll use this VOTW episode to see if I can add anymore songs to that playlist.

Paul McCartney (1.5 points)

Well, right off the bat I'd like to add this one.  This is a cool song that I've never heard.  But I have a couple of questions.  Did he write it, or is it a cover?  Also, is it a true Christmas song?  Maybe Niels can answer both questions.  Meanwhile, I give a point to the song, and 0.5 points to the video.  It's not that I liked the video, but it is McCartney and the black and white location shot, while not particularly original, is very nice.

Bob Dylan (0 points)

Not a good song at all to me.  The only good thing about the video is the chick with really "lice negs" that walks down the stairs at the 33 second mark.  I'd be okay without ever hearing this again.

The Darkness (1.5 points)

Hey, I kinda like this song too.  I get a pretty strong Queen vibe from it, anybody else?  This is a possible add on to my playlist.  I have an album from these guys.  Aren't they disbanded?  I need to go back and listen to the album I have.  Anyway, 0.75 points for the song, 0.5 points for the video, cause it's somewhat funny, but not hilarious.

Slade (0 points)

Don't care for it.

Udo (- 2 points)

This is ridiculously terrible.  The worst thing Christmas related that I've ever heard.  As much as I'm not a fan of Christmas music, even it should not be degraded like this.  I hope no children ever see this bag of shit.

U2 (0.5 points)

Nothing particularly grand about this one.  But it's okay.  I don't think I'd put it on my playlist, but it's much better than the previous junk.  I'll give the half point to the song.

Wizzard (0 points)

Again, I just don't care for it.  Don't hate it, but don't care for it.  It's just too happy.  I like the laid back, semi-slow, almost folk sounding Christmas songs, with an occasional exception, like The Darkness above.

All in all, nice post with a Holiday flavor Niels.  And you gave me 2 more songs to find and add to my Christmas playlist.

Hmmmm, questions!!! I don't THINK that it is a TRUE christmas-song, but the video sure is!! McCartney DID make a true christmas-song, I can't remember the title, I think it was "A Wonderful Christmas-time", but it was'nt very good. I've ALLWAYS loved this one, and I'm sure, that McCartney wrote it, he might have given some credit to Linda, but I'm sure he wrote it.

And yes, The Darkness is no more. I never bought an album, but I really like this christmas-song!!

What?????!!! Don't care for the Slade-song??????? It's only second to Lennon's "War is over" in best christmas-songs ever!!!!

Did you know, that Roy Wood from Wizzard was the original frontman in Elecric Light Orchestra (and The Move) ?? I don't think you did, did you???!!!

I did not know that.  I think the McCartney song is close enough to be on my Christmas playlist.
