I've been thinking about my job a lot lately. I wonder how the people who read this (or maybe I should say the person who reads this) feel about their job. That is, of course, making the assumption that the reader has a job. Times are very tough and many folks in this country (USA) are out of work. I wonder this because I'm not a very big fan of my job. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy to have employment. I have a family (with a new addition any day now) to support. And although I'd love to leave my current job for a new "dream job", I know it will never happen. I can't afford it. On top of that, I'm not even sure my dream job exists.
You see, I'm a Pharmacist. That's right, a Pharmacist. You may think to yourself, "what's this guy complaining about". And maybe you are right. I earn a decent living. I have pretty good job security. I don't have to perform extreme manual labor like Tennessee Ernie Ford sings about in this song:
All in all, I'd say I'm pretty lucky. But my job is boring. It's very uninteresting to me. I want to leave this career behind one day for my "dream". I bet you can't guess what that "dream job" is. Well, I'll just tell you. I want to be the person who picks that perfect song that plays at just the right time in that movie that you are watching. The song that you can never hear again without thinking of that very movie. For example, I'm not a big fan of the song "Dude Looks Like A Lady" by Aerosmith. But you know, the first thing I think about when that song comes on the radio is Mrs. Doubtfire. Or how about this one:
Now, I'm no fan of seeing Tom Cruise dance around in his underwear, but that image is permanently burned into my brain whenever I hear that wonderful Bob Seger tune (Old Time Rock N' Roll). Anyway, that's the job I want. I want to get paid to sit around 8-10 hours a day just listening to music and trying to find that perfect song. That song that, when you hear it 10 years later, your first thought is, damn that was a good movie.
What about you. Do you like your job? Do you have a dream job? What song or songs specifically make you think of a movie? Now that I've given you my thoughts, I'd sure like to hear yours.
I always wanted to be that guy that rides up the moutain side and works on the communication towers. The perfect marriage of technology and outdoors. But when I applied for a job in a company that does that kind of work I was told by a guy with half an arm that my back wouldnt permit it, and to this day Ive never had a back problem. My guess is that the medical check was faulty because it showed a slipped disc in my lower back. But that was the only time it di... oh well... life goes on .... Now I work on technical systems but from a process perspective, so not 100% satisfied sometimes either. I do get to work from home a couple days each week and do enjoy the area I live in the and uptown area is really very nice, so I am content, at least for now...
