ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE BRITISH INVASION PT.4

50 years on, this will close the British Invasion out...for now.
It was too much fun and the Music was too damn good to just drop it completely.
So I will return to it periodically.
But for this Chapter, I'll start with a song that was # 8 on the Billboard charts in 1965.

And I don't seem to have ever heard it!
How'd that happen, lol?
From there, some assorted and terrific songs that were part of that flurry that came over here and won the ears of many.
Including one that was originally a single by Frankie Valli in 1965 and flopped.
So a British group recorded it and...you guessed it...was a # 13 hit here in 1966!
They couldn't do anything wrong, it was almost unfair.
Then a few from what I consider the Best Harmony Group of the British Invasion, and they grew and kept on putting out Classics long after that initial rush.
It seems to me that there would not have been a British Invasion without that one vital element-The Beatles.
Simply, no Beatles, no British Invasion!
So to end, a song not BY the Fab Four, but sort of ABOUT them!
And just what does that "sort of" mean?
I guess you'll have to listen to find out, lol!
Enjoy, I had fun with this.
Oh, have a Happy Valentine's and Presidents Day!

Here are the links to this conclusion, but returns to that period will be made, at Mike Pell Rockollections:

Jon,
I'm with you on that song, but 3 people wrote me that did remember it.
One a woman I know very well.
I only know Have I The Right by the Honeycombs.
What the HELL is THAT on the drummer's head, LOL???
Is it his hair, a wig, an animal???
And in your enjoyably insane way, you are now obsessing over who it was covered by, lol!
Don't listen to the cats or the voices, even the chirping ones, you know the truth- the truth is out there...and so are you!
Of course I would play Georgy Girl.for my friend, proving life cannot get any better.
That doesn't say much about life though, does it, lol?
Be proud pal, I am very impressed that you have "I'm Alive" by The Hollies.
With some glaring omissions, you have an excellent collection of music, lol!
I didn't know that, The Honeycombs song was booted from the #1 spot in the UK by "You Really Got Me" which was booted by "I'm Into Something Good"- went from Pop to Rock to Pop.
Don't think I like that.
And see, now here's where you NEED me!
You had heard OF Barclay James Harvest, but had never actually heard a song by them before.
Damn, I AM special- makes my day, lol!
Thanks for writing and listening, and being a good sport- and I did mention you on the radio...even if it was without your permission, lol,
Mike

RJ,
The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore is orchestral like the Moody Blues, but I think it's a bit more soulful too.
I'd put The Hollies up there with all the great harmony groups oh the 60's, like the Mamas & Papas, CSNY...drawing a blank now, but there are a few others, lol!
How about that, ypu guessed to yourself that I would say the Hollies.
It's that meeting of the minds again.
And that song is called Titles by Barclay James Harvest.
Terrififc little song!
It's a return to the Classic Pell, and it goes to The Hollies- nice call!
Also a return to Jon Lovitz with that's the ticket, lol!
Snow update- we got about a foot Thursday, some Friday night, and Saturday it snowed about 5 different times morning till night, bringing another 4 to 6 inches...I LOVE it!
Thanks for writing and listening,
Mike

Nope, no memory at all.

That second song I've heard before, I swear. But it wasn't by the Honeycombs. Something is very familiar about it. HOLY CRAP! Look at the cover of the 45!!

Good golly, the drummer. Say what??!!

So it was covered by Petula Clark, The Dead Kennedys (how many ARE actually dead? too soon?), Les Fradkin, Casper & The Cookies, Vampire Weekend and Miki Lamarr. Casper & The Cookies? Really? Ghosts can't eat cookies! Don't think it was a version by any of those artists though. Now it's bugging me.

Georgy Girl. Sigh. Jon. Sigh, sigh. Can life get any better?? Thanks, Mike! Didn't know I was insane, but I'll take any damn thing I can. The cats have told me I'm not insane. They talk to me. I hear them. Voices. In my head. Talking. Chirp, chirp.

Hey, I have "I'm Alive" by The Hollies. That probably blows your mind, no? No? Yes? Maybe?

Back to The Honeycombs song, did you know that it was booted from the #1 spot in the UK by "You Really Got Me" which was booted by "I'm Into Something Good"? Now you do!

I've heard of Barclay James Harvest. I don't think I've ever heard a song by them before. That is, before today. You're so special!

Another good musical journey bro.  Let's talk about three songs in particular.

The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore by The Walker Brothers was really good.  It kinda reminded me of The Moody Blues.

Next, Bus Stop by The Hollies.  I do believe you are correct about their harmonies.  It's hard to imagine any group sounding better.  Especially on that song (The Air That I Breathe as well).  And I silently guessed to myself that you would say it's the Hollies.

And finally, that terrific song by Barclay James Harvest.  Titles I think you said.  Beautiful, and nice job of working in the Beatles references.

So, what to award?  How 'bout the Classic Pell to The Hollies.  Yep, that's the ticket.
