Okay, it's time for another spaghetti test.  The first spaghetti test didn't get much response, which is okay.  The response it did get was not entirely negative, so as far as I'm concerned Chevelle passed the test and will continue to be featured from time to time in the AOTW column (and I like Chevelle, so good for me).  The subject for this AOTW is Crooked X, an American hard rock Band from Coweta, Ok.  The album is their self-titled debut an only release to this point.  I probably should let you hear the album before I tell you that the members of this band were 14 years old when they recorded this album.  The song Nightmare was written at 11 years old.  That's pretty amazing to me.  The band plays pretty much straight ahead hard rock.  The guitars are well played, and the song structure isn't bad.  The changes in speed in the middle of a song are nice.  The songwriting isn't bad at all for the band's age.  They are no Led Zeppelin or Metallica, but if they keep at it they might be there one day.  The biggest drawback for me would be the vocals.  Now, that's not to say they are bad, but the vocalist's voice will obviously change over the next few years, so that's not really a problem at this point.

Bottom line for me is that Crooked X has mega-potential, and plenty of time to develop it.  They'll be a whopping 16 years old this year, so I have a feeling their next album will be even better than this debut.   Tell me what you think, did they stick when you threw the album against the wall?

Best Song: Fade

Most Likely To Skip: Time Is Now

14 years old!!!! That is PRETTY amazing!! Some of the Def Leppard-member's were about that age, when they recorded "On though the night" (Rick allen, anyway). I CAN hear SOME early Def Leppard-inspiration here, escpecially the guitar's fx. the solo in "Gone", part's of "Rock'n'Roll Dream" and the singer sounds a bit like Joe Elliott on "Fade". It sounds like a band from NWOBHM. It's good fun, but indeed not a purchase for me. Like you, RJhog, I don't really like the singer, but I guess he's got the time to improve. Maybe I should introduce this band to my daughter? Hey, these dudes could actually be my grand-children !!

Pretty impressive for a bunch of 14 year olds.  Gotta give them credit they have massive potential, however whats impressive about them is also what the problem is.  Its a bit immature and raw, singer will need to be replaced and the playing needs to improve as well.  The drummer is just ok for example.

Id say it was very interesting because they were 14, but lacking ...  Had you not mentioned their age, it woudl have gotten dead-panned, at least by me.

Thats how I do man!

This is a sitcker for me. Good golly, what will their next album sound like? I am impressed!

Listening to this today, for the 3rd time spead out over the last month, and its not bad. The vocalist is not great, but he certainly "sounds older" than 14, or whatever.

Decent songs, decent guitar. Not bad at all. I think I would buy it if the price was right.

I hear the guitar player trying to be Zakk Wylde on "Rock N Roll Dream". A few less screams would help it, I think.
