Classic Rock Bottom

Okay, this may be a stupid question, but what exactly are drum fills?  I think I know, but I would love a definitive answer.  I'm not a drummer, but it seems as though drum fills are similar to guitar overdubs.  Is this correct?  If so, why do drummers need to do this?  If they can't do it in the studio without drum fills, how can they do it live?

I've read some articles lately regarding drum fills on Kiss' Animalize and Asylum, but I thought Eric Carr was a pretty good drummer.  Would somebody like Neil Peart need to do drum fills in the studio?  Somebody please educate me.

Drum fills are not overdubs but are something like a drum solo. Take the beginning of Zep' "Black Dog" or when Phil Collins goes batty on the drums during "In The Air Tonight". However, they are a bit different from a solo in that they have to fit in with the music, it's not like someone doing a solo like at a concert.

So yes...I WOULD like Neil Peart to do drum fills, and he does them quite nicely.
