I've had this playlist ready for a few days but in putting this together it was very clear early on that we lost several huge influential people in 1977. T-Rex, the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash and those lost in that, and then Elvis. Sadly Jimi Jamison also passed in the last couple days which kind of underscores and reminds us that though they may be lost, they've left behind a gift in their musical legacy that will live on forever. My hope is that we represent them well here on CRB.
onto this weeks post...
So I've been keenly waiting for that certain moment when I would realized the year that music took a foot hold in my life. It's here...
When I was reviewing the list of albums released in 1977 it became quite clear that these albums were the ones put the stake in the ground of my musical taste. So, this weeks playlist is full of songs that truly were part of this experience. All of them were present in my life and collection in 1977 and all of them still get considerable airtime around here.

The only album of these, I owned myself was "Foot Loose & Fancy Free", but I bought that in '79, I think. It's not among the very best Stewart-albums, but it has it's moments.
From January to December 1977, everything was KISS for me, but it was also the year, where I got to know AC/DC and Sex Pistols. My best friend bought "High Voltage" and "Dirty Deeds..." the day after we both heard "Dirt Deeds.." at another friends house. I didn't like it myself. In fact I didn't buy an AC/DC-album until they released BIB. Weird, because now I LOVE the Bon Scott-albums. To me, they were a punk-band in the 70's, and in Europe, punk was getting REALLY big in 1977. Even though my best friend and I were KISS-fans, he was also a punk-fan allmost from day one, so when "Never Mind The Bullocks" was released, he bought it, and even though I wasn't a fan, I did hear my share of Sex Pistols and AC/DC in the good year of 1977.
I was in KISS mode in 77 as well especially Destroyer and RARO. My first ACDC album was Let There Be Rock after a friend of mine played Dog Eat Dog - first ACDC track I ever heard, strange first song but that's what it was.
That Prism song is so.....70's. Solar powered laser geetar™? C'mon! Never been a fan of Prism except for one song. At least I think it's Prism.
The Hagar song is kinda weak to me. I have never purchased a pre-"Standing Hampton" album, ever. This really doesn't change my mind.
Not a big fan of that particular Styx album. But the first time I ever heard "Come Sail Away" was in a movie theater, it played over either a surfing or skiing video/short film. It was pretty cool.
Like both songs from Roddy and Santanny.
1 album/3 songs
Weird that a 70's song sounds like the 70's... Just sayin'
Prism - I know you guys are fans of this band, but this song really does nothing for me. It's keyboard heavy to say the least. Now I don't dislike keyboards like some around here, but it just doesn't work for me.
Santana - Now this song is cool. I have zero Santana (I have no Prism either), but I've heard this many, many times on the radio. Sweet guitar playing and I like the vocal too. Great cover.
Hagar - Don't have this album. I've never heard of this song. Sounds like a pretty good party jam. Love that bass breakdown in the middle. Solid rocker, but no where close to heavy metal that he refers to in the song. The backing vocal reminds me a bit of the guy that did backing vocals for Rick Springfield in the early 80's.
Stewart - Finally, I have one of these albums. I remember my sister having the 45 of this. It got played a lot. And it was on the radio all the time. I love the way the song kicks off. And the guitar rocks. Terrific song.
Styx - Of course, I have this one as well. But I didn't back then. My cousin had it. But from my memory, it seems like we did a lot of pickin' and choosin' when listening to this. Mostly Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself. This is not a song we listened to much, but I'm not sure why. It's killer.
My ranking for these tracks:
1. Styx
2. Stewart
3. Santana
4. Hagar
5. Prism
Forgot to add that my favorite album from 1977 is Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf.
We played the snot out of The Grand Illusion front to back, back to front on repeat... There's not a note on there that I don't know by heart. Still enjoy listening to it!
If your looking to for a good Santana era, I would recommend 76-82 with Marathon being my run away favorite!
