Using Jon's logic here, my playlist would be:
1. Back For More - I haven't listened to this album in ages, but because of the weakness of 1984, I would probably keep it in my Top 5 at this point.
2. New Girl Now - I don't own this, although I have thought a lot about picking it up. It's just too expensive at almost 20 bucks. I'll keep watching at the used CD store. I got the Hughes/Thrall Rock Candy remaster there for less than 10 bucks. Maybe this will show up one day. I picked this song cause I don't know anymore from the album.
3. Big City Nights - I was never a big Scorpions fan. I really only liked a few of the MTV songs. Like Big City Nights and Still Loving You. Either of those would work for me.
4. Love Ain't No Stranger - Another album I don't own. Really, the same goes for Whitesnake as the Scorpions. But for both bands, I'm interested in picking up some catalog.
5. Hot For Teacher - I'll Wait was my favorite from this album for a long time. But the drum intro on this song and the video are just too classic to ignore. The song says basically nothing. But DLR's delivery is brilliant.
To rank these 5 songs:
5. Bad Boys Running Wild
4. Lack Of Communication
3. New Girl Now
2. All Or Nothing
1. I'll Wait
I have the Ratt, Scorpions and Van Halen albums. I would like to eventually pick up both the Honeymoon Suite and the Whitesnake albums. Nice post Scott.
I forgot about "Learning To Crawl" from The Pretenders. Great album, brought me back to their bosom because I didn't like their second one.
For me, this Honeymoon Suite tune is the best of this list. Have not heard it in a long, long time, but it is very good. Not sure if I ever heard a whole album by these guys, but maybe that will change one day (hint, anyone?).
When this Ratt first came out, me and everyone I knew just loved it, and played it to death. The song posted here is a good one for me, and I also really liked "Round And Round", of course, and also "Wanted Man" and "In Your Direction". I dont have any problems at all with Pearcy's vocals.....in the studio, that is. I've said this before...I saw Ratt at least twice, maybe 3 times, in their 80's heyday, and the lead vocals live were just bad. Bad. Totally made me stop liking Ratt, even though the studio discs are good listens. They actually sounded better in 2011 when I saw them open for The Scorpions on The Scorps "final world tour". Now-a-days, Ratt is kind of like Motley Crue for me. Just don't listen to them very much anymore.
The Scorpions have been one of my favorite bands for over 30 years now. BUT, I just dont think that much of "Love At First Sting" as a whole. Does not get played very much anymore. The best song for me is the ballad "Still Loving You". And how many times you ever heard me say a ballad is the best cut on a rock album??? My favorite Scorpions includes "Blackout", "Crazy World", "Animal Magnetism", and believe it or not, the early 2000's release "Unbreakable". That disc got them back to being a true hard rock band.
I've had the Whitesnake on vinyl for many years. Have not listened to it lately, and honestly could not remember the tune posted here. But after hearing it again, I do like it. But the best tracks off this release for me are "Slow And Easy", "Slide It In", and "Love Ain't No Stranger". BUT...we have to remind ourselves what Scott's series is about...hidden gems...not the songs that were well known and got radio air play.
And finally, the Van Halen is a pretty good album, and this track is ok for me, but not that great. "Drop Dead Legs" would have been my pick for a hidden gem. Love "Teacher" and "Panama"...but those are NOT hidden gems!
Enjoyed it Scott!
BUT...we have to remind ourselves what Scott's series is about...hidden gems...not the songs that were well known and got radio air play.
But...but...but...but...Scott played New Girl Now.
Yes, I guess it was a hit. But the band as a whole? Never really took off, did they? All of the other 4 bands have achieved a good amount of success. So, you could kinda...sorta...say Honeymoon Suite is a hidden gem. Well, if any of the rest of their music is as good as this cut.
Don't quote me without permission!! Get my lawyer on the phone...
I be smiling now...
My people are looking for your people right now.
Shhhhh...he also picked "I'll Wait". Top 15. But shhhhhh.......
Really? "I'll Wait" was a top 15 hit? Did not know that. But by the 80's, I only listened to radio when I had too. Which was not very often. I would n't doubt if "Panama" gets played today on classic rock stations more than it did back then. And "Hot For Teacher" had that video that got shown all the time on MTV.
I'll Wait was number 13. Hard to believe. I hardly remember it being on the radio at all. Panama was also number 13.
