Hidden Treasures (Newly discovered Old Music)

Ever wondered what you've been missing?  Ever picked up an album, walk around the store with it and then put it back at the last minute?  Ever done that with the same album multiple times?  Ever heard an album you liked and then totally forgot about it when you were in the record store?

 

Well recently Ive took a couple leaps and purchased some CD's of older music that's new to me.  Mostly because they were great deals, or remastered editions that looked cool, in any case its a shame I missed out on these because they are AWESOME!!

	Detective - Self Titled Debut 1977 1 - Recognition I had heard this once before at a party way back. I think it was at one of my brothers friends house. It was the one and only listen I had of this band until I seen the Remastered CD on Amazon. It sat in my wish list for a while, I read reviews, listened to sound bytes and knew it was something I wanted but never pulled the purchase trigger. Sure glad I did!  The rumor is that the band was signed to Led Zeppelins Swan Song label and was produced by Jimmy Page using a different name, and also that John Bohnam played on the album un-credited. Both rumors sure get credibility after listening to it! What do you think?
	Supertramp - Indelibly Stamped 1971 2 - Travelled Quick Note: I've censored the cover so that Jon and Niels don't get offended... I have no excuse for missing out on Supertramps first two releases. I own all their work subsequent to these releases. And truth be told I still haven't pulled the trigger on their debut, but its coming soon because this album is so good.
	Kansas - Self Titled Debut 1974 3 - Bringing It Back So I stumbled into this one because I purchased the Kansas Collection 1974-1983. I then proceeded to listen to them in order of release and instantly found myself stunned at how good their debut is! Shame I never really followed up on this one
	Scorpions - Lonesome Crow 1972 4 - Inheritance Here's one I bought because it was on sale and I have always been curious about it because it was also Michaels Schenkers debut. This isn't what I expected at all, its actually way off the Scoprions path, but its pretty dang good too! Schenker at age 17 (I think) was solid!

Damn, where to start on this one?  How 'bout I rank the songs in reverse order of my preference?

4. Kansas - Bringing It Back - Funny, I got this the same way you did Scott.  I bought that same box.  Look, Kansas is a good band, with Dust In The Wind and Carry On Wayward Son being two incredible rock songs.  But some of their stuff is just too prog for me.  I haven't listened to this album, or for that matter, to any album in the box yet, but I'll get to 'em one day.  This is the only one of these 4 songs that didn't move me in one way or another.

3. Scorpions - Inheritance - Believe it or not, I like this better than the "famous" Scorpions sound.  Scott is spot on by saying this doesn't sound at all like the Scorpions.  Schenker kills on this one.  And is that Klaus Meine?  Sounds nothin' like him.  But again, I like it even better.  I might need to check this one out.

2. Detective - Recognition - I've never even heard of this band.  This song is killer.  Love the guitar work, all the way around.  Very decent vocals too.  The only drawback is the almost reggae turn towards the end, but it's not too bad.  I think I'll keep my eyes open for this band.

1. Supertramp - Travelled - First, you should not have censored that picture of Jon.  That's not nice.  I've been picking up some of Supertramp's catalog myself lately.  Somebody undoubtedly dropped off their collection at the local used CD store recently, as this is where I've found several remasters (Breakfast In America, Brother Where You Bound, Crisis? What Crisis, Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments).  I'm pretty sure I remember seeing this one too.  Looks like I'll be heading back up there, maybe even this evening.  I haven't listened to any of those I've purchased yet, but I really like this song, so this is a definite one on my want list.

I have to say that my first thought based on your thread title was of bands that I'd never heard of but somehow discovered recently.  But back catalogs of established bands are goldmines of new music, even though it's old music.   As you can see, 3 of these 4 selections would fall into the latter category, with only Detective falling into the former.  

I'm gonna add a video that fits this thread perfectly for me.  I bought one of those "original album series" boxes a while back for Montrose.  I was somewhat familiar with the debut, but that's it.  I started listening to the follow up yesterday and found this treasure (this is a live version of two songs from the album Paper Money):

Listen to the riff on I've Got The Fire.  I can't believe this has been in my collection for months and I'm just discovering it.

Thanks Boss!!  Always trying to keep it interesting...  Loved this idea too, and its really been the thing thats got my musical attention lately. 

 

But...  speaking of I Got the Fire, I love Paper Money, wishing a Remaster will come along some time soon!  But maybe you remember back in 82 that Axe remade this tune on their Offering album which blew up pretty big at the time.  Axe, Aldo Nova and Sammy Hagar's Three Lock Box were heard at my school everyday all day for the entire school year.    Anyway, check out the Axe remake and tell me if you like it too...

That is cool.  I found this LP at the flea market last year and just recently converted it to mp3 so that I'll have it on my iPod.  I haven't yet listened to it, but there's a strong chance that it will make an appearance in the AOTW thread this year.  I had no idea that this song was on it, and really wouldn't have thought anything about it since I just discovered the original yesterday.  Funny how all this just connected.  

And that's a very nice cover.  It even sounds a good bit like Hagar.  Wow, what a small world.

Did you spill some whiteout on that Supertramp cover?

Did the Supertramp song sound a bit distorted or something? Some parts weren't clear when I listened. I can't think of the word I'm looking for, but there's something wrong. The song was ok, but nothing really memorable. Also don't like it much because of the whiteout spill on the cover, why it's there, I have no idea.

We need more early Scorpions here. I have a few of their pre-"Lovedrive" albums and they are pretty damn good. Not what an 80's Scorpions fan would expect. This was a good pick, proof being that Rjhog (shudder) liked it.

The Kansas song was good, pretty simple. It is a nice debut, I finally picked this up a couple years ago.

Detective didn't do anything for me. Sounded almost disco-ish, but not quite. Preppy rock before preppy rock was, well, preppy rock.

Love the pre-Lovedrive Scorpions experience I am having.  I have always known Taken By Force was solid and when Lonesome Crow went on sale for cheap I snatched it up and its quite interesting to say the least!  Would love to find some reasonably priced and high quality remasters of Fly to the Rainbow, In Trance and Virgin Killer so round it all out!

Interesting listen. I have an old complimation album, and it has a Detective song on it. Can't remember the name of it, but it's very good. This old album had some Saxon, Pat Travers, Molly Hatchet, I think. It was before any of these bands were real big.

But anyway, I do not have this old Scorpions. Definitely very different. I'm curious, though, is this definitely Schenker on guitar? I'm wondering if it might actually be Uli Jon Roth? I hear a little of both their styles on this track, but nothing that makes me think it's either one, for sure.

Just wondering if you definitely know it's Schenker on this release, Scott?
