Classic Rock Bottom

Time to get back to some basics. Sometimes I think I'm overthinking things and when I do that I always reset and go back to basics. So why not reset! In a time where musicianship can be questioned because of computers and more specifically Pro Tools, we can look back at the era where none of that mattered. So were resetting to a time when it was a guitar plugged in and reel-to-reel capturing it. Raw and imperfectly perfect!

Here's three underrated get-after-it guitar gems...

Tommy Bolin
Teaser Deluxe
1975 (2011 - Deluxe Edition)

1 - Teaser

Contrary to what Jon might have you believe, this was not a new release in 2011.

Teaser Deluxe is comprised of outtakes from the same sessions that gave way to Tommy Bolin's underrated yet classic 1975 solo effort, Teaser. Once more, producer Greg Hampton is the man behind the controls, and has again come up with a collection of vintage Bolin that simply kicks ass sonically. As with Whips and Roses, the renditions on Teaser Deluxe are a lot looser and freer than what wound up on Teaser, as heard on the renditions of "Homeward Strut," "Teaser," and "Marching Powder" included here. Plus, you'll find a pair of songs that are included as much longer, jammy versions than what was included on Teaser -- "Wild Dogs" and "Lotus" (which includes some great six-string work from Bolin). Also included are two different versions of a tune that was recorded during the Teaser sessions, but wasn't included -- a fiery instrumental titled "Crazed Fandango."

April Wine
First Glance
1978

2 - Roller

April Wine is a perfect example of a band that critics loved to loathe in the 1970s and 1980s -- you could fill an encyclopedia with all the negative reviews that First Glance received in 1978. Critics detested commercial hard rock/arena rock items like "Hot on the Wheels of Love," "Roller" and "Get Ready for Love" with a passion, but fans of the Canadian band paid no attention and bought the album anyway. First Glance wasn't meant to be challenging or cutting-edge; April Wine's mission was to pull the listener in with infectious grooves and hooks and enable him/her to escape -- and this album definitely accomplishes those things. One of April Wine's finest releases, First Glance is easily recommended to hard rock enthusiasts.

Atlanta Rhythm Section
Red Tape
1976

3 - Another Man's Woman

We simply must have a Southern Rock long jam or this isn't a real guitar playlist!

When they released Red Tape in 1976, the Atlanta Rhythm Section were at the brink of success. They achieved it the following year, when A Rock and Roll Alternative nearly broke into the Top Ten, but they truly found their winning sound here. True, the songs aren't quite as distinctive as they would be just a mere year later, but the blend of soul, blues, country and rock is melodic and appealing -- maybe not as complex as the Allman Brothers, but rivaling the Marshall Tucker Band in terms of songwriting and sound. An impressive effort from a band beginning to find its feet.

One of the positives of reissues with bonus tracks and such is that some of this plug and play comes to life.

Bolin - This is one artist that I'm not at all familiar with other than having heard his name.  I love the opening riff.  The vocals are decent.  Is that Bolin singing?  I have no idea.  The production is not very good, but the lead guitar is smokin'!

April Wine - Some definite fans of this band on CRB.  They're okay to me.  The opening riff sounds like an Aerosmith song (Same Old Song And Dance).  Is this considered bar room boogie?  Well, whatever it is, its just okay to me.  The lead guitars are quite good.

ARS - I bought this vinyl a couple of years ago for a buck.  Can't remember if I've listened to it or not.  I guess this is a deep cut, either way I've never heard it that I can remember.  But I really like it.  It's terrific southern rock music.  The bass work is totally amazing as well as is the guitar work.  This is my favorite track here.

I enjoyed listening to this today.  My song ranking is:

1. Another Man's Woman

2. Teaser

3. Roller

Oh, I meant to say I like your header photo.  That's cool.

Ahh, yes. That little blurb coming from someone who didn't understand the concept of NMC back then. Still don't think they do, but no matter. One day they'll learn.

I don't have the final version of "Teaser" or I actually do but don't want to compare the two, but I'll say that this is a fine version. Maybe it is "looser" or whatever, but it's still fine.

Everyone should own "First Glance". It's just a complete slab of Canuck rock. SO many good songs on there and it was the start of a few fine albums until they ruined it by "Power Play" (except for "If You See Kay", of course).

In my early days, I always though ARS was soft rock, but after picking up albums here and there, they did rawk out quite a bit. One thing about this particular album is the cover which is kind of frightening with all those red tentacles. Ok, it's actually tape, but it's more frightening if you think they're tentacles. It's more frightening than you're "scary series" from the last few weeks.

Lot's of geetar here and that's a good thing.

1. Is it Bolin on vocals as well? I like the sound of this. I never really paid that much attention back in 2011. Too bad, the band (Purple) with Coverdale, Bolin and Hughes didn't stay together longer, and made some great albums. They should had named that band something else than Deep Purple. I like the riff of this song, but I don't think it sounds like Bolin was very good at solo's. Not as good as Blackmore for sure. Sometimes he sounds like Ace Frehley on a bad day. But I like loud guitars, and I like this track. Good stuff.

2. April wine is another one of those bands, I didn't really ever paid attention to. This track doesn't really made me regret that. Typpical american or canadien rock music from the mid- to late 70's. Thank god for Van Halen and Cheap Trick. They also sound a bit like UFO, and I don't really like UFO very much.

3. I'm afraid that "Southern Rock" doesn't sound that appealing to me. A loooong track, and at times boring, but it's not bad. In my ears it sounds exactly like Boston. Hmmmm...actually, I kind of like this track. It must be one of those days, where I do like southern rock. But it could had been much better, if it had been a 5-6 minutes track.
